Abstract

The objectives of this research are to analize factors that influence households demand for water from PDAM Kota Surakarta and to analize relationship between water from PDAM Kota Surakarta with distillate water. Employing double-log linier multiple regression it was found that households demand for water from PDAM Kota Surakarta was influenced by the price of water from PDAM Kota Surakarta, the price of distillate water, the households income and number of households family members. Also it was found that the relationship between water from PDAM Kota Surakarta with distillate water is substitution. The positive cross price elasticity indicated the substitution. The households income elasticity, the dominance of households income and the positive relation between number of households family members and households demand for water from PDAM Kota Surakarta, however, indicated the complementary relationship between water from PDAM with distillate water.

Abstract

This study analyzed the gender role allocation of wholesale-traders and coffee producers in their post harvest activities in Rejanglebong and Lebong District. It examined the major participants in the coffee postharvest subsystem, identified roles and characteristics, and their problems and needs in performing these roles. These were analyzed using descriptive statistics like frequency, percentage, mean, ranking and standard deviation. Twenty-five wholesale-traders and forty-three coffee producers served as respondents of this study. Coffee business is the major income source of the respondents. Decisions in carrying out postharvest activities were done solely by the males or jointly by males and females since males played the manager’s role. Problems encountered in performing coffee postharvest activities were: technical know-how in coffee processing; low and fluctuating prices; lack of storage facilities; occurrence of bad weather condition and too high coffee trees and difficulty in hiring laborers during peak season.

Abstract

Vegetable production, including that of chillies, plays an important role in agricultural sector and rural economic development worldwide. This is because of greater farm productivity with regard to vegetables than cereal and staple crops. This paper analyses the impact of seed technology development on the economic aspects of chilli production in Central Java. Particular attention is paid to improved varieties of chilli. Potential consequences of seed technology development are discussed. Data of this study are compiled from surveys conducted in three selected chilli producing regions in 2010-2012. The results show that the major varieties of chilli grown by surveyed farmers are grouped into three broad types: hybrids, local and improved open pollinated varieties. The chilli varieties farmers selected varied according to location and cropping season. In the dry season, farmers grew similar proportions of hybrid, local, and open pollinated types. Nevertheless, there were differences among the survey sites. Farmers grew different varieties to exploit seasonal microclimates and market preferences. Mostly, farmers selected varieties for economic motives. The consequence of growing hybrids was less use of agrochemicals, particularly pesticides, than for other varieties. Overall, they show the best economic performance in the study site. Development of seed technology should consider agro-ecological and economic aspects to obtain better outcomes. Private sector and national research institutions need to collaborate more to utilise available genetic resources to produce better varieties of chilli.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the determinants of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia. Tourism sector is important in Indonesian economy because it is one of potential sources of foreign exchange and promotes economic growth. Decrease in number of domestic tourists is not as important as foreign ones since the later can be a potential source of foreign exchange. Model of travel cost demand for tourism is estimated using panel data, consisting of 34 countries across the globe during 2004-2013. Data were compiled from Indonesian Statistical Agency and the World Bank database. The result shows that distance is a one of significant factors that reduces the number of foreign tourists coming to Indonesia. Bomb attack reduced the number of foreign tourists. Tourists from western and ASEAN countries were more likely to visit Indonesia than others. Indonesian policy should guarantee with security to tourists to attract more arrivals

Abstract

The current trend shows that the growth of suburban area is increasingly massif, both its total areas as well as quantity. However, the phenomenon is not followed with the attention of researchers to conduct the study on it. Even if there is, their attention escape on an important approach in the analysis. Their analysis rests on old theories which assume that the space planning and land just triggered by the company's and household’s behavior. Nonetheless, the fact remains that land use planning involves complex functions of institution. Therefore, this brief article reports the results of a literature review about the condition of suburban areas in Indonesia. The approach is conducted by critical review using institutional analysis to elaborate classical and neoclassical regional economic theories, as well as comparing and synthesizing the literature. To sharpen the argument, I also present the relevant descriptive data. Through institutional perspective, I argue that the real question of land use planning and its development in the suburbs exists beyond land and infrastructure issues.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the selection criteria considered by individual customers in choosing Islamic (Syariah) banks; assessing the degree of customers knowledge on Islamic banks products; and finally to determine customers’ attitudes towards Islamic banks. The sample of the study was individual customers of Bank Muamalat and Bank Syariah Mandiri located in Banyumas Regency. There were two steps employed in analyzing the data: descriptive and factor analysis. The result of the study shows that there are seven factors to be considered by customers in patronizing Islamic banks. Among those factors are: perception, process, tangible, price, people, social and location. The most important factor considered by customers is perception factor. Moreover, customers’ knowledge on Islamic banks is still narrow, some do not even familiar with the products offered by Islamic banks. Religion is not the main reason for customer to patronize Islamic bank, other important reason is the level of profit sharing offered by the banks.
