Abstract

Social capital is important because it represents the productive benefits of sociability. The importance of social capital cannot be understated since it relates to every benefit of living in a society rather than as a hermit. Meanwhile, the internet, as a mode of rapid communication, may free the individual from family ties and open opportunities to join new cultures and communities. Since the end of the last century, information and communication technologies (ICTs), and the internet in particular, have been considered essential in providing access to markets, decreasing transaction costs, and increasing income for a significant proportion of people living in developing countries. This paper aims to investigate the effect of bonding and bridging social capital, internet use on poverty in West Java Province. The data used in this study was sourced from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of West Java Province in 2014, namely the National Socio-Economic Survey covering 26 districts/cities analyzed through order logit model. The results showed that social capital and internet use had a negative effect on poverty in West Java.

Abstract

Before the monetary crisis in 1998, ASEAN was one of the main objectives of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and after the crisis, FDI inflows in ASEAN were still fluctuating, but tended to slowly increase. However, in 2009, there was a drastic decline in the FDI. The study aims to establish the determinants of FDI Inflows in 7 ASEAN countries in the period of 2010-2017. This study employs quantitative analysis through the Dunning Model Approach. As the technique of analysis, the Panel Data Regression analysis with Fixed Effect Model is used. The results of this study indicate that the Real GDP and Corruption Perception Index have positive and significant effects on FDI Inflows; while Exchange Rate, ICT Development Index and Road Length have negative and significant effects on FDI Inflows. Trade Openness has no effect on FDI Inflows. The reslts also show that FDI Inflows to the seven ASEAN countries are labour-intensive FDI, low technology FDI, driven by market seeking investment motives and fulfil the needs of the local market, not export-oriented FDI and seeking profit from resources with the availability of resources overflow with better quality.

Abstract

In the development, women should be in the same rate as men to participate, have an equal chance in decision making, and reach the development needed to maximize their potential. Despite this, women often got a difficulty to participate in the economy. Women often do unpaid work or work in the informal sector. The higher portion of women to men employed in the informal sector represent women difficulty to access the employment, because of higher rates of illiteracy, lower jobs skills, lower level of education, and social-cultural barrier that prevent women to work in the formal sectors. This paper wants to analyze how the increase of women participation in the economy can increase the Indonesia’s economic growth. Using data from 34 province in Indonesia between 2014-2018, the result of the panel data regression found that the number of women’s empowerment positively affect gross regional domestic product. Women’s life expectancy positively affects gross regional domestic product. Women’s population percentage positively affects gross regional domestic product. From the three independent variables used as a predictor in this model, all variable is significantly affects Indonesia’s gross regional domestic product.

Abstract

The era of the baby boom and the improvement in the quality of life brought the Indonesian population to an aging phase. The increasing elderly population in Indonesia is not in line with the labor force participation rate of the elderly which tends to stagnant and decline based on BPS data from 2003 to2019. This study aims to examine the determinants of the participation of the elderly to work, not only from the supply side but also from the demand side of the labor market that has never been studied in the Indonesian elderly. We use the 2018 Susenas and the 2018 Podes by Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS). We used logistic regression to analyze the variables that drive the elderly to work. From the results of the study, it is known that with a confidence level of 1 percent, poverty status, the distance to urban centers (access to work) and village industrial structure (with the agricultural sector) plays a role in increasing the opportunities for the elderly to work. While the living arrangement, age, education, and ownership of pensions contribute otherwise. There is a corrigendum for this article: https://journals.ums.ac.id/index.php/JEP/article/view/16187

Abstract

Regional assets are an essential resource for local governments as the primary support for local revenue. Therefore, local governments must be able to manage assets adequately. The variables that affect the probability of using local government assets in the Special Region of Yogyakarta are population density and health facilities. Variables of land area, GRDP, and educational facilities have not increased the probability of asset utilization in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The various problems and challenges faced in asset management must be addressed immediately by carrying out reforms in regional government asset management.

Abstract

The main objective of this research is to formulate a participatory and inclusive model of economic development by optimizing the potential of local resources in Kebumen regency, Central Java, Indonesia by 1) identifying local resource-based economic potentials to be developed into pilot projects in regional development, 2) analyzing factors affecting the success of potential development, 3) analyzing the needs that influence the increase of community and stakeholders participation in regional development activities. This study uses Geographic Information System to map economic potential, Analytical Hierarchy Process to analyze factors that influence community participation, and ATLAS.ti to analyze needs and activities in developing leading sectors. The analysis shows that the economic potential in Kebumen district is focused on the potential of natural resources which include forestry, agriculture, fisheries, plantations and livestock. The regional development needs to be carried out thoroughly from upstream to downstream. AHP analysis shows that the factors that influence the success of potential development are internal, institutional and external factors. Needs analysis shows that the community holds an important role but must be supported by other stakeholders, namely the government, business actors and academics. This study recommends upstream-downstream development through nature-based ecotourism. The upstream sector that must be prepared is natural conservation combined with access to accessibility. The concept of back-to-nature developed in ecotourism must be supported by the provision of facilities and infrastructure that allows visitors to reach and enjoy the nature's beauty. In the downstream sector, tourism support services such as culinary and souvenir typical of Kebumen regency become an important part and need to involve all elements of community, especially those around the tourism destinations.

Abstract

The objective of the paper was to understand the impact of sub regional economic cooperation, known as the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT), on trade sector in Indonesia. The approach of research based on export macro information by provinces and commodities. The method used in the analytical framework was a fixed effect method. The regional study covered Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, North Sumatera, West Sumatera, and Riau provinces, and the commodities involved CPO, coffee and rubber, with 1990-2008 data series. Based on pooled regression, there was a significant impact on export from the four provinces to Malaysia and Thailand for all based years. One might focus on commodity level that, in fact, CPO was the only one commodity that had a significant impact within the IMTGT region. In addition, Thai Bath and Malaysian Ringgit, with respect to GDP for both countries, had significant influenced on export, especially after the IMT-GT endorsed.
