Abstract

The difficulty of speaking English, especially for first graders It will be a sustainable issue. Seeing that phenomenon, this study aimed to see difficulty in speaking English among first graders of English education Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. There are two in this study. This study takes a qualitative approach of choosing a location and choosing Students will batch 2020 as a participant in this study. Participants were selected through recommendations from all instructors who taught the course. About difficulty in speaking English, 4 difficulties in this study. The result was Interference from students' dialect according to the research results, the dominant the interference to students‟ spoken language is interfere with pronunciation stress any part of the word. Student dialect factors difficulties speaking English (internal factor = self-confidence) main distractions to students performance was an interference with spoken language performance lasses that make students more confident, those students who felt wrong in the lecture English and their friends can’t understand because they spoke English was like they speak the local dialect, it interferes the motivation of the student to speak.

Abstract

Learning English is matter of learning language components and language skills. Reading is the most difficult learning that plays important role in mastering English Language. Learning reading is quite challenging. It needs various techniques and applications. The transformation of English language learning is mostly affected by technological advances.  The development of English Language Teaching (ELT) resources,  Duolingo participates to transform method of English language learning on smartphone. The aim of this study is to find out the impact of Duolingo in ELT as extensive learning. Pre-experimental design with pre-test and post-test was used in this research. The researcher involved 15 students as sample with 2 months practicing duolingo apps with 20 xp on each day intensity of practice. The researcher used reading tests as pre-test and post-test and questionnaire to see students’ perception. According to the results, there was massive improvement on students score. Students also felt that Duolingo is useful apps to use everyday to learn English.

Abstract

Writing, the language skill three, is a part of the productive skill of the four intergrated language skills. Error Analysis as the language learning approach to study about the problematic English written product. It is the mostly-complecated skill than the others. This current study aims at analyzing the grammatical errors made of and investigating the levels of English grammatical errors produced. This study was carried out by using a descriptive quantitative research method by using a test, a guided writing test by letting the students write the patterned texts by answering the questions given, as the instrument to obtain the data on the error types made and the levels of English grammatical errors produced. This study shows that the non-syntactical errors found are spellings (44%), punctuations (19%), Capitalizations LCL (14%), and the selection of words (23%). Whereas the syntactical errors are the use of articles (5.5%), parts of speech (8%), subject-verbs agreement (11%), using regular and Irregular verbs (8%), making phrases (9%), subjunctives (4.5%), reported speech (6%), compound sentences (15), complex sentences (16%), modal usages (7%), and using tenses (10%). There are three levels of English grammatical errors produced; basic grammar errors (43%), intermediate grammar errors (16%), and the intermediate grammar errors (41%).

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' ability to write an essay in the descriptive text genre. Descriptive text is a genre that serves to explain something to the reader through writing. To make it easier for researchers to conduct research, researchers use the CAR (Classroom Action Research) method to make it easier for researchers to be closer to the sample. The sample in this study were students of SMPN 5 Percut Sei Tuan with a total of 30 students. Researchers have conducted research with five meetings in four stages, namely planning, and observing. action, and reflection. Quantitative and Qualitative data are tools used in collecting data. Quantitatively, the value of the students' descriptive text is as data, which has been carried out in two cycles. Started the pre-test with a total score of 1953,3 with an average of 64.5. In the first cycle, the total score was 2204.05 with an average of 73.4. The researcher again conducted a post-test in the second cycle to achieve the requirements for teaching success, namely 85%. In cycle 2 the total score was 2621.6 with an average of 87.3. This proves that there is a significant change in student scores using the example non-example method. Qualitative data taken from observation sheets, interviews, and writer's diaries show that it is easier for students to understand teaching and can attract students' attention with an image applicator that guides students to write an essay.

Abstract

Book reviews are intended to inform and evaluate a book's content and quality. It presents review critiques of the English curriculum and material development book by Pryla Rochmawati. The reviewer classified into four major sections from 11 chapters: curriculum and syllabus, curriculum components, the English curriculum in Indonesia, and the development of English-language materials. To begin, curriculum and syllabus are introduced briefly in language and explained in simple terms like those found in the first paragraph. Secondly, the curriculum is addressed by analyzing the needs of the students, establishing objectives, assessing their progress, and evaluating their progress. The third section discusses the Indonesian curriculum and how it has evolved. Material development based on Tomlinson's theory is presented in the fourth section. An evaluation of the author's visual approach and the content will be conducted in the review.

Abstract

This research aims to describe and analyze the form of politness language in conversation at classroom. Interaction between the students and teachers. The approach which is used qualitative descriptive. This research activity uses data collection methods, namely competent free involvement methods, and notes. Data of this research is the language expressions in the form of words and sentences of the speakers. The data source of this research is used oral data source in the form of speech event between the speakers, namely between the studets to their teachers. The politeness language for an interction with the teachers in classroom learning is very dominant in the three modes of speech, they are 1) request; 2) application; and 3) expect. Asking is a directive politeness act that has the goal of expecting the speech partner to be given something as requested by the speaker.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating Islamic Banking students' needs for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) online learning in Indonesia. This research method was a descriptive survey expecting to discover the target and learning needs related to online learning. This study used a questionnaire distributed three distinctive times to 572 students of the Islamic Banking department at the State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) of Ponorogo from 2020 to 2021. The observation was also used to support the data. The results discovered students' preference on the platforms used to support online learning, whether it was a virtual tool to replace in-person teaching or the learning management system, the effective duration of virtual meetings, language used and learning activities in the teaching and learning process. The reasons for students’ preferences and some students' inputs to the EAP online learning were also revealed. The needs analysis research may provide a basis for innovative online EAP course design and help prepare and deliver EAP online learning.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze grammatical problems faced by the seventh semester students of STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh in writing introduction chapter of research proposal. The research also determines the caused of those problems. 50 students involved in the study. The study showed that the students had grammatical problems in writing introduction chapter of research proposal, exactly in tenses 293 problems (37.66%). The caused of students’ grammatical problems is overgeneralization. Dealing with the way of lecturer teaching grammar, it was found that the grammar lecturer strategy was still inappropriate. Thus, it is suggested to English lecturer to use various teaching strategies in teaching grammar to make the students master grammar before starting writing.

Abstract

Illocutionary act is one type of speech acts which refers to the attempt to accomplish some communicative purpose and the extra meaning of the utterance produced on the basis of its literal meaning. This paper investigated the illocutionary act in talk show used by Oprah Winfrey and J.K Rowling. The focus of this paper is to explore the five types of illocutionary act used in utterances of Oprah Winfrey and J.K Rowling. Those five types are representative (reporting, stating, and concluding), directive (ordering, asking and requesting), commissive (offering, promising, and pledging), expressive (praising, thanking, and apologizing), and declarative (deciding). The writer used qualitative method. To collect the data, the writer transcribed the utterances of talk show and analyzed the context and classifications of illocutionary act by using discourse analysis approach. The illocutionary act used by Oprah Winfrey and J.K Rowling in talk show were analyzed based on the theory of Searle (1969). The findings showed that the utterances in talk show often use questions from Winfrey as the interviewer while Rowling as the interviewee produced the clear utterances. Findings exemplified the utterances such as thank you, pretty good, and I couldn’t stop that can be categorized as thanking in representative, praising in expressive, and deciding in declarative.

Abstract

Vocabulary is a very important skill in learning English. Therefore, effective vocabulary learning is needed to support the development of English. Mobile games are one of the media that can be implemented in vocabulary learning. Mobile games are used because they are fun and can attract students' attention in learning. The use of crossword puzzle games in vocabulary learning is the focus of this study. The crossword game used is based on a mobile game, namely "Words of Wonders: Crossword to Connect Vocabulary". The data is taken from various sources using library research methods. The paper found that the majority students who are taught by using Crossword Puzzle game is more engaging in learning and showing the increase in their score. Furthermore, the use of Crossword Puzzle game is a proper way in teaching vocabulary and can be used as a supplementary material in order to make students are more engage in the learning.
