Abstract

Background: Many adolescents face barriers to physical activity due to sociocultural factors, which may deter them from engaging in regular exercise. Sedentary lifestyles typical of urban adolescents may be associated with increased menstrual irregularities due to factors such as unhealthy weight gain, stress, and poor nutrition, all of which could be exacerbated by low levels of physical activity. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity and menstrual regularity in urban adolescents in Malang City. Method: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted on public vocational high school students in Malang City from July until August 2025. The total calculated sample size is 96 respondents. Logistic regression is used to find the relationship between dependent and independent variables. Result: Logistic regression analysis showed that the level of physical activity was not significantly associated with menstrual cycle regularity (p > 0.05 across all activity categories). The Exp(B) value for moderate activity was 1.545 (95% CI: 0.424–5.633) and for high activity was 0.800 (95% CI: 0.247–2.596), indicating no meaningful difference in the likelihood of having a regular menstrual cycle compared to the low physical activity group. Model fit testing revealed Cox & Snell R Square of 0.020 and Nagelkerke R Square of 0.027, suggesting that physical activity explained only about 2–3% of the variation in menstrual cycle regularity. Conclusion: Therefore, physical activity level cannot be considered a significant predictor of menstrual cycle regularity in this study.

Abstract

Background: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR/RR-TB) requires a complex treatment regimen, such as BPaL (bedaquiline + pretomanid + linezolid) and BPaLM (with the addition of moxifloxacin), with a shortened duration of 6–9 months and cure rates of ≥90%. This study aimed to analyze the health literacy level of drug-resistant tuberculosis patients at Ngagelrejo Primary Health Center, Surabaya. Methods: The research employed a quantitative cross-sectional approach involving 30 TB-RO patients as respondents. Data were collected using the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) and analyzed through univariate and bivariate methods using the Chi-Square test. Results: The health literacy level of drug-resistant TB patients at the Ngagelrejo Community Health Center was in the fairly good category and showed a significant correlation with education level. However, there was no significant association between health literacy and age, gender, or medication adherence. Conclusion: These findings confirm that health literacy is a crucial component in managing drug-resistant TB therapy, despite that it does not play a sole role in determining adherence. To improve treatment success, health literacy strategies need to be directed toward a participatory, communicative, and technology-based approach.

Abstract

Background: Adolescent glycemic well-being is increasingly recognized as a fundamental component of lifelong metabolic health. Within the salutogenic framework, non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) serves as a modifiable health-promoting behavior that enhances physiological resilience and supports glucose regulation. However, empirical evidence regarding NEAT as a salutogenic resource among Indonesian adolescents remains limited. Objective: This study aimed to analyze NEAT‘s role in determining glycemic status among adolescents and to identify significant predictors using Ordinal Logistic Regression. Methods: An analytic cross-sectional study was conducted among 101 adolescents at SMAN 1 Menganti, Gresik, selected through simple random sampling. NEAT was indirectly estimated as total energy expenditure (TEE) minus basal metabolic rate (BMR) and the thermic effect of food (TEF). Glycemic status was classified according to American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria as normal, prediabetes, or diabetes. Data were analyzed using ordinal logistic regression with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Most adolescents exhibited normal glycemic status (73.3%), followed by prediabetes (26,7.8%). A family history of diabetes emerged as the strongest predictor of poorer glycemic category (OR = 34.88, p < 0.001). NEAT demonstrated a significant protective effect (OR = 1.004, p = 0.010), indicating that higher NEAT levels were associated with a reduced likelihood of progression to worse glycemic categories. Conclusions: NEAT is a key health-promoting resource that supports metabolic resilience and glycemic well-being in adolescents. Simple, low-cost strategies to increase daily movement may effectively improve glycemic health, supporting the need for salutogenesis-oriented school interventions in adolescent health promotion.

Abstract

Background: According to the Basic Health Research Survey (Riskesdas), the prevalence of depression in the population aged 15–24 years is 6.2%. Adolescents are prone to a variety of risky behaviors, such as drug abuse, unsafe sexual behaviors, and unhealthy diets. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze risky behaviors related to mental health determinants in high school students. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in North Balikpapan, Samboja, and Sepaku Districts, which serve as buffer zones of the National Capital, particularly at SMAN 9 Balikpapan (n=248), SMAN 2 Samboja (n=110), and SMAN 3 Penajam Paser Utara (n=28), during October–November 2024. The dependent variables measured were health risk behaviors, and the independent variables were determinants of mental health. A multivariate analysis was performed using a binary logistic regression test. Results: Family mental health status was found to increase the likelihood of smoking behavior by 2.282 times (p=0.005). Meanwhile, psychological pressure on students increased the likelihood of excessive time spent staring at a gadget screen by 2.126 times (p=0.018). Additionally, family mental health status had a protective effect against low physical activity in students (p=0.010, OR=0.198). Conclusion: Psychological distress and family mental health significantly influence adolescent risk behaviors. Further research is needed to explore the physiological aspects of stress and the impact of family mental health on risky behaviors in adolescents.

Abstract

Background: Women's mental health during the perinatal period influences the well-being of mothers, infants, and families. Untreated perinatal depression can negatively affect health and quality of life for both mothers and babies. Objective: This study assesses the knowledge of midwives and experiences of perinatal women regarding mental health disorders, aiming to address gaps in comprehensive care during this period. Method: A mixed-methods design with a Sequential Explanatory approach was used. Quantitative data were collected from 103 women in the perinatal period and 23 midwives using the DASS-21 and Motherhope Indonesia questionnaires, analyzed via univariate methods. Qualitative data involved semi-structured interviews with five women and five midwives, selected through purposive sampling, analyzed phenomenologically. Results: Seventeen women reported anxiety symptoms, mainly due to new responsibilities and social pressures. Among midwives, 52.2% demonstrated good knowledge of perinatal mental health, 30.4% had adequate knowledge, and 17.4% showed deficiencies. Qualitative themes among women included symptoms, impacts, support received, and internal coping strategies. Midwives focused on their sources of knowledge, management techniques, and challenges in providing care. Women identified support systems, role understanding, and positive mindset cultivation as key in managing anxiety. Midwives emphasized the importance of formal and informal education, collaboration, and streamlined management procedures for effective detection and intervention. Conclusion: Family support plays a vital role in addressing mental health issues. Enhancing midwives’ roles in early detection and management through screening is essential to improve outcomes during the perinatal period.

Abstract

Background: Pregnant women who maintain psychological resilience during pregnancy and childbirth are less likely to undergo Cesarean sections due to anxiety. Incorporating Islamic principles—such as offering greetings and reciting "Bismillah" before procedures—can foster trust and rapport between patients and healthcare providers. Objective: This study explores how fifth-semester obstetrics students integrate Islamic values into maternal care at Universitas 'Aisyiyah Yogyakarta and Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta. Method: A qualitative study was conducted from March to June 2024 at both universities. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews with nine obstetrics students and analyzed thematically to identify key themes. Results: Three main themes emerged: (1) Islamic values in obstetric care at Universitas 'Aisyiyah Yogyakarta; (2) Islamic values at Universitas Sebelas Maret; and (3) how students incorporate these values into their practice at both institutions. Students recited "Bismillah" and expressed gratitude to Allah before and after procedures, taught patients to pray, and encouraged acts of worship such as prayer and Quranic recitation (tadarus). These practices reflect a holistic approach that combines pregnancy education with spiritual support, promoting trust and spiritual well-being. Conclusion: Fifth-semester students at both universities demonstrated a strong commitment to faith-based obstetric care. Their integration of Islamic principles into clinical practice enhances the patient experience by fostering trust, spiritual comfort, and holistic support during pregnancy and childbirth.

Abstract

Background: Smoking is a leading cause of non-communicable diseases and remains a significant public health challenge, particularly among children and adolescents in Asia, where prevalence rates are high. This behavior is influenced by a complex interplay of individual traits, interpersonal relationships, and broader social-environmental factors. Understanding these influences is crucial for developing effective interventions to reduce smoking among youth. Objectives: This study aimed to identify and map the key factors influencing smoking behavior among Asian children and adolescents, providing insights into potential strategies for targeted interventions.  Methods: A scoping review was conducted through systematic searches of the Scopus and ScienceDirect databases using keywords related to smoking among Asian youth. From an initial pool of 312 articles, four met the inclusion criteria for in-depth analysis. Thematic analysis categorized influencing factors into individual, interpersonal, and socio-environmental domains. Results: The review identified three main categories of factors. Individual factors included age, gender, and curiosity, which often trigger initial smoking. Interpersonal influences such as peer pressure and family members who smoke played a significant role. Social and environmental factors, including exposure to tobacco advertising, easy access to cigarettes, and weak regulatory frameworks, further increased smoking risks. These factors frequently interacted, compounding their impact on youth smoking behaviors. Conclusion: Addressing smoking among Asian youth requires comprehensive strategies that encompass education, regulation, and family involvement. School-based programs, social media campaigns, stricter laws, and family-focused interventions are essential to reduce smoking prevalence and foster healthier generations.

Abstract

Background: Menarche is the first menstruation experienced by adolescent girls. Insufficient knowledge and attitudes related to menarche can lead to unpreparedness, resulting in feelings of shame, fear, confusion, and poor vulvar hygiene practices. Therefore, health education using comic media related to menarche is necessary. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of comic media in improving the knowledge and attitudes of elementary school students in facing menarche. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group. The research sample consisted of 60 fifth-grade female students who had not yet experienced menarche, selected through total sampling and divided into two groups: 30 students in the control group and 30 in the intervention group. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate analyses, including paired t-tests and independent t-tests. Results: The results showed an increase in knowledge about menarche before and after the intervention in both the intervention and control groups, with a p-value <0.001 (p<α, α = 0.05), and an improvement in attitudes with a p-value <0.001 (p<α, α = 0.05). Significant differences were observed between the intervention and control groups in terms of knowledge (p-value <0.001, p<α, α = 0.05) and attitudes (p-value <0.001, p<α, α = 0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, health education utilizing comic media about menarche is effective in enhancing the knowledge and attitudes of fifth-grade female students.
