Abstract

Sedimentation in irrigation canals significantly reduces operational efficiency and agricultural productivity in tropical monsoon regions. This study applied three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to analyze sediment deposition patterns in the Pakal River affecting the Bareng Irrigation District, East Java, Indonesia. The integrated approach combined HEC-HMS watershed modeling with ANSYS Fluent CFD simulation to evaluate sedimentation under design flood conditions (20-year return period).Design discharge was determined as 30.4 m³/s using the Modified Haspers-Weduwen method. CFD simulation revealed severe deposition totaling 2,200 m³ per design event, distributed across four distinct zones driven by weir backwater effects, bend circulation, channel expansion, and insufficient transport velocity. Model validation demonstrated strong performance (NSE = 0.84 for velocity, 81% spatial agreement for deposition). A critical finding is that low design discharge creates widespread subcritical flow conditions, resulting in more severe deposition than higher flows. The validated methodology provides a replicable framework for evidence-based sediment management in resource-constrained irrigation systems across tropical regions, with broader applicability to climate adaptation planning and infrastructure resilience assessment.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the accuracy of two commonly used distance sensors in robotics systems, namely the ultrasonic sensor HC-SR04 and the infrared sensor Sharp GP2Y0A21YK0F, to support the development of collaborative robots (cobots) that require reliable navigation and object detection. The experiments were conducted in four stages: basic accuracy testing over a distance range of 5–50 cm with 2.5 cm intervals, testing under varying temperature and lighting conditions, accuracy testing on five types of reflective materials (metal, glass, wood, plastic, and fabric), and testing with varying object inclination angles of 0°, 15°, 30°, and 45°. The results indicate that the ultrasonic sensor demonstrates more stable performance and greater tolerance to environmental variations and inclination angles, with a maximum error of approximately 2.5 cm at a 45° angle. In contrast, the infrared sensor provides high accuracy at close ranges but is highly sensitive to lighting conditions and certain reflective materials, with errors reaching 8–10 cm for transparent or light-absorbing surfaces. These findings suggest that the ultrasonic sensor is more suitable for general use in cobots operating in dynamic environments, while the infrared sensor is best applied in controlled scenarios or as a complementary sensor. This research provides a foundation for selecting or combining distance sensors in the development of more accurate and efficient navigation and safety systems for collaborative robots.

Abstract

Crude Palm Oil (CPO) is a strategic commodity whose quality and selling value are largely determined by the Free Fatty Acid (FFA) content. High FFA levels cause a decline in product quality and directly impact industry profitability. A CPO quality evaluation at PT. TLDN (CAP) demonstrated the inability of the production process to consistently produce premium CPO (FFA 3%). This study aims to identify the root causes of the increase in FFA in the CPO processing process and to formulate effective improvement strategies. The research method uses a quantitative approach with a case study, applying the Seven Tools of Quality to CPO production and quality data for March 2025. The analysis results show that the largest contribution to FFA formation comes from condensate and liquor flows with a cumulative contribution of 88%, while UnCO has a relatively stable FFA. Method factors are the dominant cause, especially mixing oil flows with different qualities in one storage tank, followed by machine and material factors. Improvement simulations through oil flow separation can reduce the FFA of premium products from 3.58% to 2.5-2.69% and increase the proportion of premium CPO to 37.44% without increasing production capacity. These results show that the integration of Seven Tools with oil flow separation effectively improves CPO quality while providing significant economic impacts

Abstract

Graphene has attracted significant attention as an anode material due to its high surface area and unique electronic properties. This study explores the adsorption behavior of H₂O molecules on graphene using Density Functional Theory (DFT) with the van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF). Various molecular orientations (zero-leg, one-leg, and two-leg) and adsorption sites (top, bridge, hollow) were analyzed. The results show that the most stable configuration is the two-leg orientation at the hollow site, with an adsorption energy of -0.123 eV. The findings suggest that the stability of the adsorbed system is governed more by the interaction between hydrogen atoms and the carbon surface than by the oxygen atom. All stable structures are characterized by adsorption distances between 2.8 and 3.2 A. The interaction is classified as physisorption due to its low energy and minimal charge transfer. These results are consistent with previous studies, confirming the key role of molecular orientation and adsorption site in determining the adsorption behavior of H₂O on graphene.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a model for estimating nutrient content (ppm) in spinach plants using the YOLOOD architecture. Nutrient estimation is performed based on leaf image analysis as a non-destructive approach to detect nutrient deficiencies at an early stage. The method involves collecting spinach leaf images with six nutrient variation levels (100, 300, 500, 700, 900, and 1200 ppm), with 300 images per class, followed by annotation, augmentation, preprocessing, and dataset splitting into training and validation sets with a 70:30 ratio. The model is trained for 50 epochs with a batch size of 4, an input image size of 416×416 pixels, the Adam optimizer, and a learning rate of 0.0001 using default YOLOOD parameters. The model is designed to recognize visual differences in spinach leaves across nutrient levels and estimate nutrient concentration values. Performance evaluation is conducted using Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and the coefficient of determination (R²). The results indicate that the model achieves good object detection performance with an mAP@50 of 0.93; however, in the nutrient estimation stage, it obtains a MAPE of 16%, a normalized RMSE of 0.1571, and an R² of 0.7903. Therefore, the YOLOOD model is considered effective in detecting visual characteristics of spinach leaves and reasonably capable of estimating nutrient content, although further improvements are needed to enhance prediction accuracy.

Abstract

Most pineapple peels are discarded as waste, although they contain 8.3% pectin, a valuable component for edible film production. This study aimed to examine the effects of temperature and extraction time on pectin yield and to evaluate the texture of edible films produced with glycerol. The overall process consisted of three stages: pineapple peel pretreatment, pectin extraction, and edible film preparation. Results showed that extending extraction time increased the amount of pectin obtained. The maximum yield was recorded at 125 minutes and 100°C, reaching 8.985 grams. In terms of tensile strength, higher extraction temperatures accelerated gelatinization and improved film strength. The best tensile strength was obtained at 70°C for 150 minutes, achieving 34.898 N/mm. Organoleptic evaluation involved 208 responses, where 49.5% rated the film as normal (103 responses), 37.5% as like (78 responses), 4.8% as really like (10 responses), and 8.2% as don’t like (17 responses). Overall, edible films made from pineapple peel and tapioca were considered acceptable. The highest preference was observed for texture, followed by color, while taste and flavor scored lower. These findings highlight the potential of pineapple peel films, although further formulation improvements are needed for better consumer acceptance.
