Abstract

Lake water plays an important role as a water resource and as a habitat for aquatic ecosystems. However, increasing human activities around the lake have led to pollution, particularly by phosphate and nitrite compounds originating from domestic and industrial waste. This study aims to determine the levels of phosphate and nitrite in lake water samples from the southern (AP1) and western (AP2) parts of the Polder using the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method. Phosphate analysis was conducted based on SNI 6989.31:2005, and nitrite analysis was based on SNI 06-6989.9-2004 using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results showed that phosphate levels in samples AP1 and AP2 were 0.053 mg/L and 0.046 mg/L, respectively, while nitrite levels at both points were 0.055 mg/L. These parameters are still below the quality standard thresholds set by Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021. These findings indicate that the water quality of the Polder lake still meets the established environmental standards. Therefore, the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method is effective for water quality monitoring, and the results of this study can serve as a basis for sustainable aquatic environmental conservation efforts. Keywords: Lake, Phosphate, Nitrite and UV-Vis Spectrophotometer.

Abstract

Persian silk (Albizia julibrissin) is a medicinal plant known to contain active compounds such as alkaloids, phenolics, flavonoids and quinones which have the potential as antioxidants and natural toxic compounds. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of these compounds in the leaf extract. In addition, a toxicity test using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method on Artemia salina larvae showed that the extract had an LC₅₀ value of 0.000007 ppm, which is included in the very toxic category. These results indicate that Persian silk leaves (Albizia julibrissin) have the potential to be developed as natural bioactive agents. Abstract

The growth of industry in Indonesia, especially in the textile sector, has led to an increase in the production of liquid waste containing heavy metals such as chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), and copper (Cu). These metals can pose significant health risks if they enter the body of living things. To overcome this, one alternative method of reducing liquid waste is to utilize biosorption by bacteria. This study aims to determine the ability of metal absorption by several bacteria, namely Streptococcus mutans, Flavobacterium sp, Pseudomonas sp, and Bacillus subtilis. The results showed that Streptococcus mutans was able to absorb Cr (VI) with a maximum efficiency of 90.80% at a concentration of 5 ppm on the 5th day. While Flavobacterium sp was able to absorb Pb at a maximum of 96% at a concentration of 2 ppm on the 18th day. Pseudomonassp showed maximum uptake of 96.192% for Cr(VI) at 5 ppm on day 14, 36.874% for Pb at 4 ppm on day 16, and 84.447% for Cu(II) at 3 ppm on day 16. Bacillussubtilis showed maximum uptake of 97.42% for Pb at 10 ppm. These findings indicate that bacteria have significant potential for heavy metal biosorption in wastewater treatment. Abstract

Heavy metal contamination, particularly lead (Pb), is a serious environmental issue due to its toxic nature and ability to accumulate in the food chain. Common analytical methods such as AAS and ICP-OES offer high accuracy but require expensive instruments and complex procedures. As a simpler and more economical alternative, UV-Visible spectrophotometry utilizes the formation of coordination complexes between Pb²⁺ ions and complexing reagents such as alizarin sulfonate. This mini review discusses the interaction between Pb and alizarin sulfonate, the working principle of UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and the influence of sample matrices on complex stability. The review indicates that this method provides valid, rapid, and efficient results, and can be effectively applied to environmental samples with complex matrices, provided appropriate sample preparation and method validation are conducted. Abstract

Copper (Cu) contamination resulting from industrial waste can have detrimental effects on both the environment and human health. To control Cu pollution, a rapid and accurate detection method is required. This study compares the performance of Cu²⁺ ion-selective electrodes using various ionophores in a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) matrix plasticized with dioctyl phthalate (DOP). The ionophores compared include EDTA, Rhodamine 6G, and Schiff base. The evaluated parameters include Nernstian slope, detection limit, linear range, response time, and selectivity. The results indicate that Rhodamine 6G and Schiff base exhibit superior sensitivity and response time, while EDTA provides better long-term stability.
