Abstract

Chemical cleaning of dentures using a denture cleanser is essential to prevent denture stomatitis—an infection of the oral mucosa caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus adhering to the denture base. One key component of denture cleansers is an antibacterial agent. Habbatussauda (Nigella sativa) contains antibacterial compounds that may serve as an alternative active ingredient in denture cleansers. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of effervescent tablets containing Habbatussauda extract as a denture cleanser in inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus growth on acrylic resin denture bases. The study employed a true experimental, post-test-only control group design, using 24 acrylic resin plates divided into six treatment groups: Habbatussauda extract concentrations of 9%, 12%, 15%, and 18%, along with positive and negative controls. Each plate was immersed in the respective Habbatussauda-based denture cleanser solution for 15 minutes. Researchers then counted the bacterial colonies using a colony counter. The Kruskal-Wallis test yielded a significant difference in colony counts (p < 0.05). Post hoc analysis with Bonferroni correction revealed significant differences between the 12% and 18% extract groups, as well as the positive control, compared to the negative control. However, no significant differences emerged between the extract groups (9%, 12%, 15%, and 18%) and the positive control. These findings indicate that Habbatussauda extract-based denture cleansers effectively inhibit Staphylococcus aureus growth on acrylic resin denture bases after 15 minutes of immersion.

Abstract

Root canal irrigant is a very important factor in supporting the success of root canal treatment. The currently recommended combination of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), ethylenediamintetraacetic acid (EDTA), and chlorhexidine has many drawbacks including toxicity to periapical tissues, bad taste, negative interactions between ingredients, and extended application time. Siwak (Salvadora persica) stem extract has been widely studied in its use as a dental material, including as a root canal irrigant. This study aims to formulate the ethyl acetate fraction of siwak with low concentration NaOCl, and test its antibacterial potential against E. faecalis. This research used 9 groups, namely the ethyl acetate fraction (FEA) of siwak ethanol extract with the concentrations of 1.25 mg/ml, 2.5 mg/ml, 5 mg/ml, a combination of FEA siwak 1.25 mg/ml + NaOCl 1.25%, FEA siwak 2.5 mg/ml + NaOCl 1.25%, FEA siwak 5 mg/ml + NaOCl 1.25%, NaOCl 1,25%, saline, and chlorhexidine. Based on the number of colony counts, the most significant inhibition was seen in the combination group of FEA siwak 5 mg/ml + NaOCl 1.25%. Data analysis was carried out using the One Way ANOVA test with a significance value of 0.00 (p <0.05) followed by the Post Hoc LSD test with a significance value of 0.130 (p>0.05) in the comparison between the combination group of FEA siwak 5 mg/ml + NaOCl 1.25% with chlorhexidine. The combination of FEA siwak 5 mg/ml + NaOCl 1.25% has the same effectiveness as chlorhexidine 2% in inhibiting E. faecalis bacteria, and potential as a root canal irrigant.

Abstract

Dental and oral health problems are still a challenge in Indonesia, especially in early childhood. Based on the 2018 Riskesdas, in the city of Semarang, 37.20% of children experienced cavities, while the prevalence of caries in children aged 3-4 years reached 81.5%. The DMF-T value in that age group was 4.9 and increased to 6.7 at the age of 5, which is very high. This condition confirms the importance of the role of parents, especially mothers, in early prevention. This condition emphasizes the importance of the involvement of parents, especially mothers, in early prevention. Posyandu has indeed provided education, but the use of the Card for Healthy Teeth (KMGS) is still limited and has not fully involved the active role of parents.  This study aims to analyze the influence of KMGS as an educational medium for mothers under five in improving knowledge and skills to maintain children's dental health. The method used was a quasi-experiment with a pretest-posttest design on 15 mothers under five at the Posyandu of Jabungan Village with data analysis using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed a significant increase in the knowledge (p=0.014) and skills (p=0.007) of mothers after being given the intervention. Thus, the use of KMGS is proven to improve the knowledge and skills of mothers in maintaining children's dental health

Abstract

Oral health in Indonesia remains a significant problem, with 57.6% of the population experiencing problems but only 10.2% accessing treatment. Dental calculus is one of the main etiologies of periodontal disease. Therefore, healthcare professionals require a rapid and standardized screening tool to efficiently identify high-risk patients. This study aims to report the development process and trial results of the "Calrisk Dentistry" application, a clinical decision support system for detecting risk levels and identifying the main causative factors of calculus. This study used a cross-sectional design to conduct a trial of the system on 60 respondents. The trial was conducted on 60 patients, where the data collection process was facilitated by dental hygiene students. Data were collected using the "Calrisk Dentistry" application that analyzes 13 risk variables to generate a risk score. The application successfully classified respondents into four risk categories: Low (15%), Moderate (40%), High (31.7%), and Very High (13.3%). The risk factors with the highest impact identified by the system were inappropriate brushing time, one-sided chewing, and the presence of caries. The trial results indicate that the developed "Calrisk Dentistry" application is a functional and effective tool for calculus risk screening. This system has the potential to become a technological tool to increase patient awareness and facilitate early prevention.

Abstract

Dental and oral disease is a disease that affects all age groups, both in children and adults, including the elderly. One of the health problems in the elderly is dental caries and periodontal disease. Dental and oral disease is a problem in Indonesia based on the 2004 Household Health Survey (SKRT), the prevalence rate of dental caries in Indonesia reached 90.05%. In a study, it was stated that periodontal disease can increase the risk of stroke by more than 50% at the age of 25-54 years, this is because bacteria in periodontal disease enter the blood vessels and follow the flow of capillaries to the brain. Other studies show that 95% of people over 65 years old have periodontal disease, and 70% of elderly people need periodontal care [1]. Efforts are made to overcome the problem of dental and oral diseases in the elderly by approaching health workers and dentists about the importance of dental and oral health. This can also be done by the formation of dental and oral health cadres who play a role in monitoring the dental health of the elderly in the activities of the elderly Posyandu [2]. Padangsari Village, Banyumanik District has an Elderly Posyandu which every month routinely carries out Elderly Posyandu activities with activities including routine general health checks, including blood pressure checks, uric acid checks, blood sugar checks, but for dental health, especially periondontal tissue, routinely has not been carried out. Dental examinations need to be done regularly in the elderly because one of the symptoms that arise in degenerative diseases can be monitored through the oral cavity. The general purpose of this study is to detect diseases that can manifest through the oral cavity through examinations, education in improving dental health maintenance and providing care needs to the elderly group in Padangsari Banyumanik Village, Semarang City. The results showed that, based on the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test on calculus scores before and after treatment in the elderly (N = 60), the values of Z = –6,751 and p = 0.000 (p < 0.05) were obtained. These results show that there is a very significant difference between the score before and after treatment. All respondents experienced a decrease in calculus scores after treatment, which indicated a positive effect of the intervention given.

Abstract

Down syndrome is characterized by maxillary hypoplasia with a short and narrow palate, resulting in a smaller shape and volume of the oral cavity. Research findings by experts on the cavum oris volume of individuals with Down syndrome indicate differences due to genetic abnormalities, secondary causes, and age. This purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between age and  cavum oris volume in children with Down Syndrome at the Special School in Yogyakarta City. An observational study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted on 28 children with Down syndrome at the Yogyakarta Special School who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The digital printing of the cavum oris is performed using Shining 3D Dental. Measurement of cavum oris volume using 3Shape 3DViewer and Inventor Professional 2020. The relationship between age and cavum oris volume was analyzed using statistical tests of correlation coefficients and T-tests with a 95% confidence level. The results show an R value of 0.942, which means there is a very strong positive correlation between increasing age and increasing cavum oris volume. The T-test shows that the age variable has a t-value of 3.967 with p=0.058 (p<0.05), indicating that the age variable does not have a significant effect on the volume of the cavum oris. The research conclusion is that in children with Down syndrome, the volume of the cavum oris increases with age, but this increase is not significant.
