Kanz Philosophia is a refereed academic journal published by Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Sadra in Jakarta. The journal conscientiously aims to provide a scholarly platform for critical and informed articles, particularly in the field of Islamic Philosophy and Mysticism. Abstract

The discourse on conception of God has occupied fundamental position either in theology or philosophy. In philosophical one, this conception could be traced since very ancient time of Greek until modern era of philosophy with various metaphysical view points. Spinoza was one of the philosophers whose famous metaphysical conception of God is basically a critique toward transcendental paradigm that detaches God from His creation entirely. In this case, he develops his own metaphysical system that rests upon “substance” as focal category. This paper seeks to discuss Spinoza’s metaphysical conception of God which represents his theological monism through his wide range elaboration on “substance”.

Abstract

This paper discusses the theory of unity in religion, according to aphilosopher and mufassir, Allamah Tabataba’i. Though the discussion in this paper is about a social union, it is diff erent from the social justice. Unity described and presented in this section is included every form of unity within the various dimensions of society and certainly had a role and impact in shaping the social unity. Unity is also seen from the dimensions of the universal beliefs of individuals and the cosmological nature of society, as what the purpose and the meaning of religion itself that is to give stability to the social community in which to live their lives will also provide stability to the lives of individuals. The most important of which is the objective dimension where he directs the whole field and the social dimension in one direction, put it all on the line so that one of the individuals themselves and are led to a component of the community and to a social purpose. This purpose in view is none other Islamic monotheism and divine knowledge or ma’rifa.

Abstract

Al-Raniri is often positioned by some scholars as “superior” fi gure, which is contrasted to Hamzah Fansuri and Syamsuddin Sumaterani, and that is why they predicate him as one of pioneer of Islamic reformer in MalayIndonesian archipelago. Anti wujūdiyyah Sufi sm campaign by al-Raniri quite successful to some extent to amputate the rate of development of philosophical Sufism was brought by Fansuri and Sumaterani in the one hand, and strike off the nature of moral Sufi sm in the other, redeemed by bloodshed. This article discussed the “superiority” of al-Raniri’s thought of Sufism, viewed from a broader spectrum, either in relation to problems of faith or theology and politics surrounding the circumstance of his time.

Abstract

Sufism has infl uenced the religious life of Banjarese Muslims in South Kalimantan since the 18th century up to now. The tendency to combine ethical Sufism of al-Ghazali and metaphysical Sufi sm of Ibn Arabi, and the veneration of Sufi masters in the reading ritual of their hagiographies, and the emergence of certain heterodox Sufi sects, all of these can be found along history of Islam in this region. On the other hand, there are social changes that have also infl uenced the colour of Sufism developed in certain period. In the 18th century, orthodox Sufi sm fought against pantheism which was presumably came from Hindu origin, but in the 19th and early 20th century, Sufi sm became a social movement, namely a certian Sufi Order that was involved in the war against the Dutch. In the later period, Sufi sm became the source of moral and spiritual strength in the face of social, cultural and political crisis. Moreover, since the Reformation Era, Sufi masters and their followers have become potential allies as voters for politicians.

Abstract

In history of Islamic education, we know that institution of Islamic education shape and spreading rapidly in the Islamic world since they have emerged. Here we recognize term of pesantren, school and madrasah, what we consider to be institution of Islamic education. However we need to know that in world of sufi sm also there is education institusionalization; and this matter also had experience of growth and played an important role the same well. It is considered to be semy formal education institute, which later called as zawiya, khanaqah, ribath, and tarekat. Here is also arranged by a curriculum, syillaby, educational items, and soon, as going into effect in education world in general. This paper will try to discuss about education institutions which emerge and expand among all sufi , with relevant things.

Abstract

This article discusses the doctrine of Sainthood (al-walāyah) which has a strong basis in the Qur’an and ḥadīth and it has been elaborated systematically through Ibn ‘Arabi’s vast and complex teachings. While in the study of Sufism in the archipelago, the term saint (walī)has been known along with the spread of Islam began in the archipelago, and it refers to two meanings; as the person who has the occulties as the implications of the sanctity and walī as the ruler of a particular region. Regardless the definition and scope, the true doctrine of sainthood can not be separated from the teaching of the prophetic and apostolic message which implies the human world is not only the physical realm, but there is a metaphysical world that has not been known to human and from which the physical world is controlled.

Abstract

This paper tries to reveal the concept of ma’rifa developed by Ibn al-‘Arabi (d. 1260), especially in his magnum opus, Fuṣūṣ al Hikam, the late work considered to be the synthesis of his doctrine of metaphysics represented through the wisdom of each prophet; their uniqueness of divinely inspired and their epitome of spiritual perception, concerning the knowledge of God. It shows the transformative role of the prophet’s messages involving in the deeper creative process of divine-human dialogue, calling and response, that is repeatedly mentioned in the Qur’an. Ibn ‘Arabi emphasized the importance of perceiving the direct relationship between all of creation and the divine Names and Attributes (al-asmā’ wa-l-sifāt al-ilāhiyyah), between creation as outward manifestation and as inward spiritual awareness (rūh). Everything that exists and is experienced in reality is the manifestation (tajallī) of different divine Names.

Abstract

‘Irfān or Sufism is defined as the knowledge of God or ma‘rifa al-Ḥaqq. Theoretically and practically, it is a discipline that originated in the Islamic tradition from Islam itself and has its roots in the Qur’an and ḥadiths of the Prophet Muhammad. This statement at the same time rejects some orientalists who however maintained the view that ‘irfān and tasawuf and its subtle and sublime ideas have come into the Islamic world from outside, which is non-Islamic origins.

Abstract

Compassion in ethical discourse is used to describe the attitudes and actions of moral agent in helping the vulnerables and the suffering. Discourse around compassion generally focused on whether compassion is an attitude of sympathy or empathy, or it is the attitude of compassion derived from an altruistic attitude which is inherent in intelligent being. This paper argues that compassion is realized only in the context of ethics of care. For that reason, the paper will first distinguish simpaty from empathy and contextualize them within the realm of altruism. At the same time this approach plays the role of criticizing emotive ethics of David Hume and Kantian ethics which is attacked by Kantian ethics as heteronomous.

Abstract

As an alternative to the impasse of the modern-enlightenment project in ethics, Alasdair MacIntyre suggests to recourse to virtue-ethics. This article will present first, what MacIntyre means by the modern-enlightenment project in ethics, secondly, his critique of that project, especially his arguments why such ethics is bound to fail. Thirdly, why, according to him, developing virtue-ethics, somewhat like the Aristotelian-Thomistic model, will provide a solution to the impasse. Finally, I would like to make a short evaluation of MacIntyre’s suggestion by focusing on the question whether his suggestion to recourse to virtue-ethics is just a nostalgia to the past as criticized by Ross Poole. I will argue in this article that, despite MacIntyre’s failure to give concrete examples of good modern ethical communities that live out his model of virtue-ethics, as Poole has rightly pointed out, as long as human being can still agree on certain basic human values upon which global ethics of virtue can be built, MacIntyre’s suggestion is not simply a nostalgic recourse to the past as Ross Poole believes. MacIntyre’s recourse to virtue-ethics can indeed provide solution to overcome the danger of moral nihilism looming over the modern-enlightenment project and it can also provide reasonable ground for living ethically.
