LOCAL WISDOM is a scientific journal in the field of Architecture and the City as a "bridge" between the disciplines of architecture and urban planning and design studies.This scientific journal focusing on research relating to the study of local wisdom. Local knowledge is a potential local characteristic based on a local culture that has been a tradition in public life. A form of local wisdom studies varied widely, ranging from a cultural value system, social system to the physical manifestation of culture in the form of local knowledge, local technologies, as well as the physical form of the built environment. Studies of local wisdom is an effort in order to realize the harmony of the city environment, and sustainable through the use and development of local knowledge, contextual and a participatory approach.

Abstract

Traditional architecture is not merely a physical manifestation of spatial needs; it also reflects the cultural and social values of the community through its spatial patterns. The aim of this research is to explore the integration of local values into spatial behavior within the traditional architecture of the rumah adat (traditional house) of Ponorogo, East Java. The presence of the traditional Ponorogo house serves as a representation of local wisdom that continues to endure amidst the dynamic changes of time. This study identifies and analyzes the relationships between local values—such as customary norms, Javanese cosmology, and social structures—and the spatial usage patterns and behaviors of the inhabitants. The research employs a qualitative-descriptive approach, using data collection techniques including direct observation, in-depth interviews with residents, and literature studies on the traditional architecture of Ponorogo and the behavioral patterns occurring within these traditional houses. The research findings reveal that spatial division in the Ponorogo traditional house is not merely functional but carries strong symbolic meanings. Spaces such as jogan, omah mburi, gandhok, pawon, senthong, and emperan illustrate social hierarchies and ritual functions in the lives of the Ponorogo community. Moreover, the building’s orientation, spatial forms, and layout reflect a deep connection with nature and Javanese spiritual teachings. This study focuses specifically on the Sinoman and Joglo Bucu house types. The research affirms that traditional architecture possesses complex behavioral dimensions that cannot be separated from the cultural context surrounding it. Understanding the integration of local values into spatial behavior in traditional architecture is expected to serve as a foundation for the preservation and development of architecture with strong local identity amid the currents of modernization

Abstract

Vernacular houses in Indonesia embody indigenous wisdom for climate adaptation, making the performance of their passive design a relevant topic in sustainable architecture. Modernization and increasingly uniform building forms have eroded climate-responsive principles, raising concerns about thermal comfort amid climate change. This study investigates how a Joglo house in Ngrogung, Ponorogo, Indonesia, maintains indoor comfort through passive strategies. Field observations and continuous monitoring over three months measured air temperature and relative humidity in four interior zones (Omah Ngarep, Omah Mburi, Omah Tengah, Kamar). Performance was evaluated using six criteria covering twelve passive-design parameters. The mean indoor temperature stabilized at 25.77 °C (October 26.18 °C; November 25.92 °C; December 25.20 °C), while relative humidity averaged 75.45%, indicating generally comfortable conditions. Comfort gains were chiefly associated with building form and envelope porosity: favorable orientation limiting solar load, insulated roof enclosure, light-colored breathable walls, and jalusi/louvered windows that sustain airflow with supportive site layout. Conversely, underperforming parameters included limited roof volume (29.75% of total), short eaves (60 cm), dark roofing, small operable window area (2.06% of floor area), and low floor elevation (65 cm). Overall, synergistic interactions among orientation, material porosity, and natural ventilation underpin resilient thermal behavior.

Abstract

This study examines the thermal performance of Kobuang Limo House, a traditional Malay stilt house in Riau, Indonesia, as a model of passive tropical adaptation. Using a quantitative-descriptive method, field measurements of air temperature (Ta), relative humidity (RH), and air velocity (Va) were conducted to calculate the Effective Temperature (ET) based on SNI 03-6572-2001. The analysis focuses on the relationship between architectural configuration, particularly wall openings and attic ceiling conditions to indoor thermal comfort. Results show that houses with ventilated ceilings maintain a stable ET within 26 - 27 °C, while the non-ceilinged unit recorded higher temperatures (~ +0.7 °C). The proportion of wall openings (15–25 %) also contributes to effective cross-ventilation, supporting natural cooling performance. These findings confirm that the passive thermal strategies embedded in Kobuang Limo House remain effective in achieving sustainable indoor comfort and provide empirical evidence for climate-responsive architectural design in the era of Society 5.0.

Abstract

Spatial flexibility in the Lom people’s house (Memarong) is the main goal in this article. Memarong is the vernacular dwelling of the oldest indigenous community in Bangka Island, Indonesia. Historically linked to shifting cultivation and high mobility, Memarong is a stilt house of timber structure and thatched roof, organized as a single undivided interior that supports multiple temporary configurations. Using a qualitative–interpretative approach, the study combines field observation in Gebong Memarong traditional village with repeated interviews with key customary leaders, and comparative analysis of three floor plans drawn from literature and on-site documentation. The findings show that spatial flexibility in Memarong manifests in five main forms: (1) multifunctional space, (2) shifted space, (3) openness in space, (4) fixed and dynamic elements, and (5) spatial grouping. These are enabled by architectural elements such as the nine-column structural grid, bendul floor beams, movable partitions, and distributed storage (pare). The study concludes that Memarong’s flexible spatial system constitutes an adaptive strategy to changing household size and activities, offering design insights for contemporary housing facing space limitations and evolving needs.
