Abstract

This study examines the implications of figurative language in the film adaptation of Laskar Pelangi directed by Riri Riza. Laskar Pelangi is a movie based from a novel by Andrea Hirata which was chosen because of positive messages and motivating storyline it has. The method used to conduct this study was descriptive case study. The data source was merely this 124-minute movie of Laskar Pelangi. The data collection was done through documentation by watching the movies several times to find out the figurative languages and the implications conceived. Later, the data were analyzed using interactive analysis involving data reduction, data display, and data verification. The results show that, first, the literary devices of irony, metaphors, simile, hyperbole, and symbolism are employed in the novel "Laskar Pelangi" to accentuate the profound disparity between the aspirations of the students for a more promising tomorrow and the harsh realities of their present existence; second, in terms of pedagogy, figurative language simplifies difficult topics, helps students understand Laskar Pelangi's characters' feelings and analyze word meanings. It also helps students appreciate literature. Conclusively, it can be inferred that Laskar Pelangi holds affirmative and inspiring connotations for its audience, particularly the student demographic.

Abstract

T.S. Eliot, a towering figure in the literary world, casts illuminating beams across the fragmented and spiritually barren modern landscape. This paper thoroughly examines Eliot’s oeuvre on modernity through an Islamic lens. By drawing upon Islam's philosophical and spiritual traditions, this research juxtaposes Eliot’s poetic evaluation and tapestry of Islamic perspectives as an ointment to heal the wounds of modern society. At the core of this inquiry, Islamic concepts such as the acknowledgment of the oneness of God (tawhid), mystical Islamic belief and practice (sufiism), and social solidarity (ummah) challenge Eliot’s perspective on modern sickness. This analysis also delves into Eliot’s poetic tapestry to explore how Eliot weaves a solution to the chaos of the modern era, including the fragmentation of identity, the decay of traditional values, and the existential crisis of humanity. This comparative discussion reveals how Islamic thought offers an alternative framework for comprehending the challenges of modernity. Ultimately, the research aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of Eliot’s enduring critiques and the multifaceted Islamic responses to the complexities and disorders of the modern man living under the influence of modern Western civilization.

Abstract

For the Western consciousness, madness has always welled up simultaneously at multiple points, forming a constellation that slowly shifts from one form to another, its face perhapshiding an enigmatic truth. Meaning here is always fractured. William Shakespeare is renowned for his capacity to manufacture imagination and a great master of his use of psychological studies in the portrayals of insanity. In general, his artwork shows a keen knowledge of human nature. He has a thorough understanding of the human psyche, personality, and actions. Shakespeare's protagonist Hamlet assimilates madness in the most obstinate wisdom. This wisdom may be thin, but it reigns supreme. It presupposes and requires a perpetual doubling of the consciousness of madness, which disappears beneath the surface of madness, only to reappear again on the other side. The paper is an attempt to explore the mindscape of Prince Hamlet using the theoretical base of Michel Foucault's discourse on madness and the formation of power dichotomy. The paper also envisions a Lacanian regeneration of desire, sexuality, and narrative hegemony.
