In fact, most students face their high affective filter that drives them have low motivation, inhibition, and anxiety. For that reason, teacher plays an important role in delivering and applying the appropriate technique in teaching speaking. One of the recommended techniques that can be used by teachers is examples non examples technique. Examples non examples technique is an activity that encourages students to analyze and construct the meaning through the picture as an example. The objective of this study is to find out whether there is a positive response from students in the implementation of examples non examples technique. The research methodology used in this study is qualitative research in which there were thirty students of Agriculture of Teuku Umar University in the second grade were considered as the respondents of this research. The data collected by distributing a set of questionnaire to the respondents and analyzed by using percentage formula based on Likert scale indicators: strongly agree, agree, disagree and strongly disagree. The result of the research showed that there are 77 % of the respondents have positive response toward the technique application. It means that the implementation of examples non examples technique became favorite technique to the students in mastering speaking since it can develop students’ critical thinking, can construct the concept through the pictures, increase students’ communicative competence, and has sense of togetherness while students work in group cooperatively. Keywords: Speaking Competence, Response, Communication, And Examples Non Examples       Technique

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the psychological effects that have been drawn by the implementation of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic on university students. The approach implemented in carrying out this study was a descriptive qualitative approach. There were 140 students involved as respondents. The instrument used was a questionnaire set that was generated from Wiles (2020). Before proceeding with data collection process, the validity of the instrument was checked, and the items were valid. Then, the data were analyzed using Interactive Analysis as suggested by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The result shows that from the seven mental effects raised from increased screen time, the students admit that they most likely feel fatigued (100%), they experience physical pain such as headache, shoulder sore, eyesore, and others (100%), they have bad time management (98.6%), they feel isolation being drawn from their classmates (68.6%), and they experienced uncertainty about the lecturer’s explanation during the online classes. Hence, it is suggested that there is a special unit to care about the students’ mental health during online learning in this pandemic.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the educational system has changed. This brought a significant shift to class and teaching management as well. Teachers manage their classes in various ways by utilizing digital platforms. This study aims at finding out students’ perspective on using website in the teaching and learning process. This study was conducted by using qualitative approach design, with the descriptive case study method. There were 17 university students at Universitas Teuku Umar who were involved as the respondents in this study. In data collection, an interview set consisting of 6 questions was distributed to students. Later, the data were analyzed using interactive analysis through the three steps, which are data identification, data display, and data verification. The result shows that students have positive feedbacks toward the use of websites during online learning rather than other digital platforms. The reasons are the constant availability, length adequacy, and completeness. The implication of this study is that it is more preferrable for students to learn by using websites—or better known as e-learning system—rather than other platforms. Abstract

Stunting is a condition of malnutrition that is related to the inadequacy of nutrients in the past so that it is a chronic nutritional problem. Kuala Pesisir sub-district has a stunting prevalence in 2017, namely 39.2%. Purwodadi Village contributed the highest stunting cases, namely 66 under five with stunting. The research objective was to determine the effect of mother's knowledge and work on the behavior of family food independence as an effort to prevent stunting in toddlers in Purwodadi Village, Kuala Pesisir District, Nagan Raya Regency. This study used a cross-sectional design with a total population of 75 mothers who came from poor families and had children under five. The sample was taken using a total sampling technique of 75 mothers from poor families. The data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analysis using multiple linear regression tests. The results showed a relationship between knowledge and work of mothers on the behavior of family food independence as an effort to prevent stunting in children under five (P. Value <0.05). The results of multivariate analysis show that maternal knowledge has a stronger influence on the behavior of family food independence (Ex. B. 26, 32). The conclusion is that there is a very significant relationship between knowledge and work of mothers on the behavior of family food independence. Mother's knowledge gives a stronger influence on the behavior of family food independence as an effort to prevent stunting in toddlers. It is necessary to improve the education program for the community about the importance of family food independence in preventing stunting in children under five.

Abstract

This study investigated the TOEFL benchmark policy as an exit requirement for Universitas Teuku Umar students. The research method used was survey design hereby the data from the questionnaire and students' TOEFL score were collected. Under the policy, the students have to pass the standard passing score of TOEFL to graduate. 100 non-English major students from Universitas Teuku Umar participated in this study. The results of the study revealed that the participants gave more positive responses than negative ones. The extend of approval for this policy seemed more related to their abilities, awareness of the importance of learning English, and motivation to learn English. The result from TOEFL scores taken from 2018-2019 found that as many as 58% of students failed to obtain minimum criteria (˃ 400) while only 42% of them reached 400 or above. It indicates that Universitas Teuku Umar students are not ready yet to face this policy.  On the other hand, based on the questionnaire result, most students agreed with the implementation of TOEFL as an exit requirement, however, a minimum passing score should be evaluated and a set of students' needs under the policy should be facilitated.

Abstract

This study examined the utilization of code switching used by teachers in English classes. The motivation behind this investigation is to discover the condition that acts as the baseline of code-switching use. This study was merely a qualitative investigation where the data are based on the quality, not quantity. The subjects of this study were 2 English teachers in SMP IT Az-Zahra, Takegon in two English classes in 2015. The data collection process was done by recording the teachers’ speech during teaching using a voice recorder to see in what condition the teachers employed code-switching. The result demonstrates that the recurrence of code switching for topic switch is what happened all the time for 30.4% in the highest rate. While the least used condition to employ code-switching is addressee specification which is only 7% usage from both teachers. Conclusively, the teachers assumed that utilizing code switching to facilitate the educating and learning process can help students grow their understanding, enable them to stick on the point, and help the students certain about conveying meaning.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out whether there is a significant difference in speaking performance between students who are taught using the Examples Non-Examples Technique (ENET) and those who are taught using the Grammar Translation Method (GTM). To achieve the goal of this study, the experimental design method was used with an experimental class and a control class. The sample of study was a class of 45 students as the experimental class and another class of 45 students as the control class. The instruments used for the study were tests. The data was analyzed through statistical formula including finding the frequency distribution, range (R), class of data (K), class of interval (I), mean, standard deviation, and Z-score. The results showed that the Z-score pre-test of experimental and the control classes was 1.3 (Z countZ table) in which the Z table was 2.04.  This means that there was no significant difference between the scores of both classes in pre-treatment. However, in post-treatment the Z-score for the experimental class and control classes was 5.1 (Z countZ table) which indicated that there was a significant difference between the experimental class and the control class in post-treatment. In conclusion, ENET can be applied as an alternative technique in teaching speaking. The research hypothesis (Ha) is also proven that the use of ENET provides a positive contribution for the development of students’ speaking performance.
