Abstract

This study aims at exploring the problems and challenges faced by the students in the long English language teaching practices of the Department of English, Islamic University, Bangladesh, and the achievable modifications recommended by its alumni to ensure pragmatic English language teaching at the universities of Bangladesh. Both qualitative and quantitative or mixed-method approach was applied and a total of 21 alumni of various academic years from 2010 to 2022 (12 Years) of the Department of English at Islamic University, Bangladesh participated in the study. The findings of the study revealed that majority of the participants, after completing the graduation and post-graduation in English, failed to develop their English language skills at the advanced level due to the lack of some crucial issues, like particular course and test on specific skills (Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing), effective course design and teaching approach, learner-expected professional dedication of the English language teachers, practice and feedback session, and the use of technological devices in the language classroom and  language lab in the English language teaching practices. The study suggests that at least one particular course and test for each English language skills and more practice-oriented ELT courses should be added to the syllabus, and the language teachers should be more serious concerning course design, class activities, effective testing, feedback, use of technology-based classroom, blended learning approach, group discussion and implementation of specific as well as experience-based teaching approach to English language teaching.  DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i1.8074

Abstract

The preliminary analysis found that most of the students encountered several difficulties in achieving the target score of the Test of English Proficiency (TEP), such as low motivation and lack of vocabulary. Thus, this study attempts to develop the appropriate learning materials of the TEP preparation course for English Department students through Edmodo as the Learning Management System (LMS). Through the Research and Development method and employed the ADDIE model, 15 (fifteen) English Department students were involved as the research subject. Various procedures used in the ADDIE are: (1) Analysis, (2) Design, (3) Development, (4) Implementation, and (5) Evaluation. The results show that the students perceived positive perception towards TEP learning materials, the content of the materials, and Edmodo as the LMS for the TEP preparation course. Finally, some suggestions are also given for further researchers: providing tutorials and creating a more colourful design. DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i1.7036

Abstract

Studies show that students who cheat at certain levels of education are more likely to do so at work or at later levels of education. One form of academic fraud is plagiarism. Some researchers claim that students deliberately plagiarize, while others plagiarize because they do not understand how to properly cite, paraphrase, or refer to sources. Therefore, this study aims to understand English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' self-reported reason for internet plagiarism in Academic Writing class, as understanding the causes of student plagiarism is essential to properly addressing the problem. To obtain the data, a survey of respondents' reason for plagiarize was distributed to second, fourth and sixth trimester students of the Department of English in a private university. A total of 85 students participated in the survey. As a result, we found that some people, despite having a high level of understanding of plagiarism, admitted to intentionally plagiarizing for various reasons. Additionally, research shows that people do not understand that claiming work from a source as their own without acknowledging the source is part of plagiarism.DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i2.8640

Abstract

Annotated bibliographies are used in various situations. Annotated bibliography is a short-annotated list of sources that summarizes, evaluates, and states source relevance. The ability to write annotated bibliography shows one’s ability to find the right information for writing research article. This paper aims to see how the ability of second year students majoring in English is in making annotated bibliography. This research is qualitative research using data obtained from 42 students who assigned on writing annotated bibliography. Data were explained descriptively from the score mean and percentage using Turnitin then scaled them  using 4-scale Linkert Scale. Results showed that of five variables, quality of sources, annotations content, overall quality were good, while accuracy and annotations structure variables were adequate. For Turnitin check, 69.05% showed good and very good quality, while only 9.52% them showed poor quality. Finally, it isindicated that most of the second-year subjects consider as having good standard abilities categorized in writing annotated bibliography. DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i2.8966

Abstract

This study examines the kinds of translingual negotiation strategies practiced by an Indonesian family living in the US. This study involved a father and son, natives of Indonesia, who had been in the US for many years. The father and son usually mix and mesh English, Indonesian, and Javanese when communicating. Two kinds of data were collected; the daily talks between the father and son were audiotaped, and follow-up interviews with the father and member checking were used to triangulate the data. The data reveals that the father and son indeed practiced Canagajarah’s (2013b) four translingual negotiation strategies: invoicing, recontextualization, interactional, and entextualization. Additionally, the interview reveals some of the father’s goals with his son’s language learning and literacy in their mother tongue. DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i2.8990

Abstract

This present study explores how thesis writing anxiety causes delay in thesis writing completion along with its coping strategies. It adopted narrative inquiry as the research method. The participant was one former student of English education graduate program at a state university in Central Java, Indonesia. Data were garnered through semi-structured interviews. The data were then analyzed by employing thematic analysis. The results suggest that thesis writing anxiety was caused by family and financial problems, full-time working duties and poor time management, as well as unpleasant administrative staff services. Thesis writing anxiety empirically affected thesis writing completion in terms of thesis writing procrastination as well as lack of confidence and feeling worried of making mistakes. Successful coping strategies include identifying problems and seeking solutions, establishing mutual communication with thesis supervisors and workplace stakeholders, as well as maintaining self-motivation. Practical implications and suggestions for further studies are also discussed.DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i2.8004

Abstract

Due to the last two year Covid-19 Pandemic, the teaching learning activities were globally switched, from offline to online learning. This happened at University of Merdeka Malang, too. One of the researchers, who taught Basic Listening course at Diploma Three English Program, had to change language laboratory activities into synchronous and asynchronous activities. Inevitably, it was resulted in the teaching materials as well. The objective of this RD study is to propose the use of Internet technology through selected videos in the YouTube Channel to partially adjust the existing teaching materials in the above mentioned course. As the primary instruments, the researchers adapted the framework of Graves’ materials development and used questionnaires as the secondary instruments. Graves’ framework consists of seven components of course development processes, however, the researchers did not use or apply them all (only Steps 4, 5 and 6) since they just made partial adjustment to the existing materials usually used during the offline class. Abstract

In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde, regarding myriad aspects of life, comes up with commendable aesthetic notions just before he serves on the table, as to them, direly cynical views. Each of the appealing concepts gives one an intellectually euphoric realization as much as each of the cynic additions, instantly, renders one confused. Surprisingly, the seemingly deliberate twists added to the aesthetic considerations make them more beautiful and thought-provoking. Wilde’s cynical parts characteristically offer an obvious liberalism which profoundly hinges upon humanity. Abstract

This study sought to prove whether there is an inclination in students’ ability before and after video-editing treatments.This study was carried out under the umbrella of quasi-experimental study as it involved one group pretes-posttest design. There were 13 students chosen through the procedure of total sampling. They were given a pretest to make 3 videos—3 minutes in duration each—in topic of Describing People, Inviting People, and Accepting and Refusing Invitation. Later, six treatments were given: three treatments of video-editing and three other were about material design. Afterwards, the post-test was essentially similar with pretest regarding the procedural means. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22 by employing the formula of normality test and Z-Score to perform hypothesis testing. The results uncovered that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is consequently accepted because the rvalue obtained from the Z-Score is 2.63, which is higher than rtable= 0.47 (df=11, α=0.05, right tailed). Additionlly, the average score for the 13 samples before applying video editing procedures was 56.23, and after the treatments, this score incilned to be 79.Then in can be concuded that after obtaining the treatments, students' performance in terms of video editing abilities with reference to material design or speaking class has necessarily improved. The finding implies that it is best to train teacher and prospective teachers with video-editing ability to enable them design good and convenient teaching materials in the future where digital era has transmerged into all pedagogical aspects.DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i2.8817

Abstract

In mastering English language skills, the learning process matters in determining the goals, including learning pronunciation. So far, research on pronunciation has emphasized pronunciation rather than the process. Thus, this study aimed to investigate students' problems and techniques for dealing with problems in acquiring pronunciation. Six English Department students were voluntarily requested to participate in this study and discuss their perspectives. In data collection process, an in-depth interview was employed. The findings found that participants had difficulties distinguishing between sounds and words, encountered novel words, had low learning desires, dealt with varied accents, and experienced interference from their language. In the other sense, they applied some strategies such as increasing exposure to English, having expert guidance, and pursuing to have a severe problem. The results of this study will play a positive role in showing the barriers experienced by students when learning pronunciation. Thus, it is hoped that the teachers will be aware of these issues, so that teaching pronunciation will be more effective.DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i2.8496
