Abstract

Former inmates who experience discrimination while seeking employment may be more likely to recidivism if they do not have or lack the necessary skills. This issue is also faced by former inmates from the Sleman Class IIB Penitentiary, Yogyakarta Special Region, so several coaching in self-reliance and skills, e.g., animal husbandry, were provided in "Kampung Asimilasi" for inmates. However, there are problems with the animal husbandry of laying hens due to the lack of knowledge about proper management practices among correctional officers as facilitators. To address this, the "Ayam Bahagia" program was developed to provide correctional officers and inmates with the knowledge and practical skills they need to effectively and properly manage the raising of laying hens. The program covered the preparation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation through a blended delivery: offline and online methods. Six correctional officers and eight inmates followed this program. A pre-test and post-test measured the increase in knowledge and practical skills. Data were analyzed using t-test. This program has resulted in a significant increase (P>0.005) in knowledge and skills related to animal husbandry. Correctional officers have been able to become facilitators for inmates with adequate ability, and inmates have been able to raise laying hens independently.

Abstract

Vaccine development and enhancing the body’s immune system are the focus in dealing with COVID-19. One way to improve the body’s immune system is to consume immunostimulating substances, such as health supplements. However, most people still think that health supplements can be consumed daily without certain restrictions because vitamins are not considered drugs. The purpose of implementing this activity is to increase knowledge about how to use vitamins and health supplements and improve community skills to identify natural or fake vitamins and health supplements. The targets of this community service activity were cadre mothers from all sub-district in Utan Kayu Utara Village. The method of implementing the activity is by direct education and giving leaflets. Community service activities in the Utan Kayu Utara sub-district ran smoothly. Participants were very enthusiastic about asking and discussing the material presented. The number of participants in the activity was 40 people. There was an increase in the average value of knowledge from 59.00 ± 11.0 to 86.50 ± 7.49 after providing education through counselling and media leaflets.

Abstract

Various preventive, promotive, and curative efforts have been made by the government to prevent the increase in COVID-19 cases in the community. The successful endeavor to halt the transmission of COVID-19 undeniably requires the active participation and collaboration of diverse parties, one of which is Dasawisma cadres. The role of Dasawisma cadres who serves the community directly makes them vulnerable to COVID-19 so it is necessary to be COVID-19 vaccinated. This community service aims to increase the knowledge of Dasawisma cadres about COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women. The education was carried out online through zoom meetings attended by 437 participants. Based on the analysis, it is known that the p value is 0.000 (<0.05), which means that the education provided was useful to improve the knowledge of cadres about vaccination for pregnant women. Hopefully, the education will be continued especially regarding the importance of boosters that promote by the government.

Abstract

Children living in orphanages are generally vulnerable to close-contact transmission diseases, including head lice infestation. The clinical manifestation of head lice infestation was relatively mild, such as itchy scalp, and hence it is often overlooked as a community health issue. Education plays an essential role in preventing re-infection and eradicating head lice infestation. The treatment options include chemical treatment using pediculicides and physical management by shaving the head and manually removing the parasite. This community service activity aimed to eradicate head lice from Yayasan Griya Asih Orphanage. A series of three activities were conducted at Yayasan Griya Asih Orphanage in Central Jakarta. Each activity was done around one month apart to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Firstyear medical students were recruited to participate in these activities to familiarize them with real-world community health problems. Student volunteers helped applied pulse doses of Permethrin 1% shampoo and provided health education activity. Fiftyfive Yayasan Griya Asih Orphanage residents joined this activity from mid-October until December 2022. Residents were instructed not to share their personal items to prevent re-infection. Health education activities were done using one-to-many followed by a one-on-one format. In conclusion, head lice infestation screening is essential in crowded environments, and permethrin 1% pulsed dose followed by personalized health education activities and pest control effectively broke the disease transmission chain and eradicated the head lice infestation.

Abstract

Kajhu Village is a coastal area within the Baitussalam District of Aceh Besar. In 2004, the village suffered significant damage due to an earthquake and ensuing tsunami, resulting in loss of life and damage to infrastructure. Despite the inherent disaster risk, Kajhu Village possesses great potential, including the scenic beauty of its coastline and the abundance of mangrove ecosystems. These natural resources can be harnessed to develop environmental and disaster-based tourism opportunities. In recognition of this potential, the Fasilitator Tangguh Bencana (FASTANA) - Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center at Universitas Syiah Kuala (TDMRC USK), an organization dedicated to community service and disaster mitigation, launched a disaster risk reduction program aimed at empowering the community and reducing the risk of disaster in Kajhu Village. Data collection involved observation and interviews with local residents. Community service activities focused on education and empowerment, including disaster preparedness education for the community and schools, promotion of the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems, and training and empowering the creative economy. Additionally, disaster literacy corners were established in schools within Kajhu Village. Through these programs, the goal was to create a community that is resilient to disaster and economically self-sufficient. By providing support and empowerment to the community, it is hoped that a new mindset can be fostered, resulting in greater independence and resilience. The disaster education provided aims to help individuals and families understand and implement effective disaster prevention strategies. The implications of the community service program in Kajhu Village are increasing community resilience and preparedness in dealing with natural disasters and developing the potential of coastal ecosystems to become sustainable ecotourism attractions, providing inspiration for communities in other areas to adopt a participatory and structured approach in an effort to increase resilience and disaster preparedness and developing the potential of coastal ecosystems.

Abstract

Health issues are important in the world of education, including in Islamic boarding schools. To support the health status of santri (students at the Islamic boarding school), Islamic boarding schools need to facilitate them through Pos kesehatan pesantren or Poskestren (Islamic Boarding School Health Center). This community service aimed to establish a Poskestren at an Islamic boarding school. The methods adopted in this community service included advocacy, education, socialization, promotion, and empowerment for santri. This study used action research design. There is collaborative between researcher and student in Islamic boarding school. We collected data by survey, taking action and evaluating action. Data analysed used descriptive. The result of this community service showed the establishment of a Poskestren was supported by all parties, and a special room was provided for this health service with the necessary facilities and infrastructure at Kampung At-Tauhid Islamic Boarding School. In addition, this community service also established Kader Santri Husada (Santri Husada Cadres) consisting of nine santri whom the campus and community health center had trained regarding emergencies, use of medical devices, personal hygiene, and prevention of sexually deviant behavior. It is expected that the Poskestren can provide services for all communities at the Islamic boarding school on an ongoing basis. It is also expected that the Islamic boarding school and community health center can continue the development of this Poskestren service.

Abstract

Stunting is a condition that results from chronic malnutrition during childhood in low- and middle-income countries. The national prevalence of stunting in children under 5 years is 9 million children out of 24.5 million children. Factors that contribute to stunting include poor feeding and sanitation practices. The purpose of this community service is to provide education to health cadres in the Jaya Mekar Health Center area, West Bandung, regarding parental feeding practices as an effort to prevent stunting. The community service method is to provide education to health cadres through parental feeding booklets. This community service was carried out for 1 day, 10-10-2022, with 26 RW represented by 36 cadres in the Jaya Mekar Public Health Center area, Bandung Barat. The benefits of Community Service are expected after the cadres know about parental feeding, then it becomes a cadre education strategy for mothers (community) about how to give good food for children. The result of this education increases the knowledge of cadres significantly (0.019; 0.001) before and after providing education about parental feeding, then it becomes a cadre education strategy for mothers about how to give good food to children. Recommendations are needed for further programs to monitor cadres in providing education to mothers.

Abstract

Attempts to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) have failed in most areas where illegal ASM occurs. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of Africanisation in promoting the formalisation of the ASM sector of South Africa. Due to the acute lack of employment and other challenges associated with ASM, it is essential to ensure that the sector is appropriately formalised to allow communities to benefit fully whilst minimising any negative impacts emerging from ASM. In this qualitative exploratory research, data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires from 15 participants and was analysed using thematic analysis. It was found that the over-reliance on capitalistic ideals in allocating mining opportunities is one of the main reasons why past formalisation attempts have failed to produce desired outcomes. This is probably because there is poor communication between the state and the mining communities, and this means the aspirations of the communities are not considered when creating mining policies. The researchers, therefore, proposed an alternative approach to govern the mining sector, and this approach takes advantage of the tendency of Africans to work as communities. This approach is based on the idea of Africanisation. Facilitating the exploitation of mineral resources by communities rather than individuals, as is the case in capitalistic societies, will help empower communities since the mining enterprises will benefit more individuals and proceeds from the mining enterprises will help stimulate local economic development.

Abstract

The rapid population growth in Panongan, a subdistrict within Tangerang Regency, has surpassed regional averages, with rates of 6.5%, 3.4%, and 2.7% for Panongan, Tangerang Regency, and Banten Province respectively. This demographic surge presents challenges in terms of economic, social, and population-related issues while also offering avenues for market expansion and novel economic prospects. This study aimed to elucidate the application of Islamic value-based empowerment for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through the community engagement program executed by the Faculty of Economics and Business Islam at the University of Cendekia Abditama Tangerang. The program was designed to assist 20 MSMEs in Panongan Subdistrict. Employing Participatory Action Research (PAR), which emphasizes collaboration between researchers and the targeted MSME communities, this study investigated the effects of Islamic value-based empowerment on business aspects. The findings revealedthat this approach enhances Islamic value-based empowerment on the economic aspect, business ethics aspect, marketing aspect, packaging design, bookkeeping, legal aspects, and fiqh muamalah aspect among MSMEs. This empowerment has consequently created extensive prospects for business expansion, contributing to increased prosperity.

Abstract

The Jogja Smart Province (JSP) is a framework for using IT to encourage regional cooperation to assist in resolving specific strategic challenges or difficulties. Additionally, JSP supports the growth of potential in Yogyakarta’s Special Region. Several digital apps, including mobile and web-based ones, support JSP. These applications are crucial to actualizing the five JSP aspects of smart living, culture, society, environment, and governance. However, several significant issues, such as cyberattacks on JSP applications, pose a danger to the long-term viability of JSP. To do penetration testing of JSP-owned applications, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Informatics at the Vocational College of Universitas Gadjah Mada is conducting this community participation initiative. The Communication and Informatics Office of the Special Region of Yogyakarta permitted to handle JSP apps, is a partner in this community involvement initiative. Applications including Jogja Istimewa, Visiting Jogja, e-Prima, BiroHukum, Paperless, Jogjaplan, LPSE, Peladen, Sadewa, Jogjaprov, and Simpeg2 are among those targeted for penetration testing. The potential flaws detected in JSP applications can be found by performing penetration testing on these apps. In addition, several recommendations are made to strengthen JSP applications’ resistance to future cyberattacks. Therefore, this activity can improve the security of the users’ data and directly impact the community.
