Abstract

Urban communities living in the Mendawai Social Complex, Palangka Raya City are facing various economic challenges, especially income instability due to odd jobs such as construction workers and traditional miners. Community Service (PKM) activities use the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method. Considering the large area of the PKM location, researchers invite active participation from the GKE Panenga Congregation, which also experiences the same economic problems, to find solutions to these problems. The purpose of this PKM activity is to improve community welfare through three main aspects, namely independence, social capital, and life skills. The results of this PKM activity show that participants can find references for independent businesses that have the potential to increase income through life skills training in the culinary field. Participants also obtain solutions in managing business groups so that they can be sustainable through business coordination training provided by practitioners. Then, there is a re-strengthening of the social capital of the participants through solutions to social problems provided during the PKM activity. In addition, another quite prominent result of this PKM activity is that it not only has a positive impact on the participants but also on the Mendawai Social Complex community, namely the existence of a reference for a business model that can be developed independently. At the end of this PKM activity which uses the Community Based Development (CBD) approach and produces effective community empowerment activities, the researcher suggests that both the government and other private parties also use the same approach to the Mendawai Social Complex community, or other urban communities who are trapped in poverty.

Abstract

Oral health is essential for overall human well-being. Everyone, regardless of age—whether young or old—must maintain good dental hygiene, including kindergarten children in rural areas. Unfortunately, knowledge of oral health and tooth-brushing skills among kindergarten students in these regions remains inadequate. To improve their understanding of dental health and proper brushing techniques, effective educational methods are required. In response to this issue, a community service team implemented a multi-method approach targeting two groups: primary and secondary beneficiaries. The primary group consisted of kindergarten students, who were engaged through interactive counseling, demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions, singing, games, rewards, and practical tooth-brushing exercises. Meanwhile, for the secondary group—teachers and parents—the team utilized persuasive communication via WhatsApp messages, providing oral health education and encouraging parents to consistently remind their children to practice proper dental hygiene daily. Based on the program evaluation, the multi-method approach was proven effective in enhancing both the knowledge and skills of kindergarten children in maintaining oral health. Furthermore, it contributed to creating an environment that fosters healthy behavior among children. Therefore, the team believes that dental health practitioners and educators can adopt similar methods to achieve optimal outcomes in promoting oral health awareness.

Abstract

Surface water is the primary source of water for communities but is highly susceptible to contamination that can pose health risks. Telukambulu, a village in Karawang, West Java, faces challenges in household clean water quality. This community service activity aims to evaluate household water quality through the assessment of physical water parameters and screening using water test strips to measure chemical parameters. Analysis reveals that household water is not entirely suitable for daily needs such as drinking and cooking, with chemical parameters like pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels being inconsistent. Community education was conducted to enhance understanding of the importance of water management, coupled with the application of simple filtration technology for water purification. This solution was designed to be easily adopted and sustainable. The program successfully raised community awareness about the importance of clean water quality and provided practical guidelines for improving household water quality. Through this approach, it is expected that the community can manage water more healthily and support better living standards.

Abstract

Infectious diseases such as lameness remain a persistent health problem for small ruminants in community farming systems. Although antimicrobials are frequently used as a treatment strategy, this practice contributes to increased medication use and raises concerns over antimicrobial resistance. This study assessed behavioral practices surrounding antimicrobial use among farmers at Ngudi Dadi, a community farm in Central Java, Indonesia, and implemented a multifaceted intervention combining farmer training and the construction of a biosecurity-focused footbath.Behavioral data were collected through structured survey with 21 farmers, covering five domains: antimicrobial administration, disposal of veterinary medicines, frequency of antimicrobial use, medication storage, and treatment of sick animals. Behavioral scores varied across categories, with consistently higher scores for treatment practices, but notable gaps in antimicrobial administration and disposal behaviors. Importantly, no significant correlation was observed between years of farming experience and behavioral practice scores (Spearman’s ρ = 0.0488, p = 0.8335), suggesting that practice gaps are widespread regardless of farming experience.Post-survey, a training session was conducted, followed by the construction of a footbath using lemongrass essential oil as a natural disinfectant. The footbath is now routinely used for incoming livestock at Ngudi Dadi Farm, serving as a biosecurity measure that supports reduced reliance on antimicrobials. This study represents the first initiative in Indonesia to integrate behavioral assessment, farmer education, and footbath implementation into a comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship strategy. Expansion of this model to other community farming settings, along with the development of standardized operating procedures, may enhance its scalability and long-term impact.

Abstract

This paper presents an initiative aimed at introducing digital skills to a rural community in East Java, Indonesia. A training workshop on the use of electronic surveys was conducted through a classroom-style presentation. The session included a simple step-by-step tutorial, hands-on practice using a smartphone-based electronic survey form, and a demonstration of how the survey results could be visualized. Thirty adult participants, both men and women, from the village of Karangpakis, Kabuh Regency, East Java, took part in the workshop. The findings indicate that the community service activity highlighted both challenges and opportunities for digital empowerment, which are analyzed in three key areas: (1) the delivery of an accessible workshop that enabled participants to practice using an online survey application; (2) the significance of introducing technology to enhance communication regarding village welfare; and (3) the advancement of participants’ digital literacy through exposure to the practical benefits of the survey results. The paper concludes by discussing implications for sustainable engagement and directions for future research.

Abstract

Global waste generation continues to intensify environmental pollution and contribute to climate change, with municipal solid waste projected to increase substantially by 2050. In Indonesia, rapid urbanization has resulted in approximately eight million tons of waste produced daily in major cities, highlighting the urgent need for improved waste management systems and greater public awareness. In Banten Province – particularly in Sidamukti Village, a coastal area in Pandeglang Regency – these challenges are further exacerbated by insufficient waste management practices. To address these issues, Universitas Trisakti implemented a Community Service Program (PKM) in Sidamukti Village aimed at strengthening waste management practices and increasing community knowledge of health and hygiene. Program activities included health and hygiene (PHBS) awareness sessions, shell-craft training, eco-enzyme production, composting, and the establishment of a waste bank. The methods employed consisted of workshops, hands-on training, and community engagement activities. A paired-sample t-test was used to assess the effectiveness of the interventions. The results showed significant improvements in PHBS practices as well as in participants’ skills in crafting, eco-enzyme production, composting, and waste bank management. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the PKM initiative in enhancing community-based waste management and promoting environmentally responsible practices.

Abstract

Groundwater potential can be effectively assessed through geophysical surveys utilizing the Very Low Frequency (VLF) electromagnetic method. This technique employs low-frequency electromagnetic waves (15–30 Mhz) to detect subsurface conductive lithologies indicative of groundwater presence. This study, conducted in Bugel Hamlet, Keben Village, Tambakromo District, Pati Regency, Central Java, aimed to delineate the spatial distribution and depth of potential groundwater resources. The region faces intensifying drought conditions; in 2023, the affected population rose from 26,791 to 37,114. Furthermore, Tambakromo presents complex geological challenges, with lithology dominated by consolidated rocks (claystone, marl, and sandstone) of the Lidah and Mundu Formations. Consequently, existing aquifer systems exhibit low productivity and limited discharge rates (< 5 liters/second) due to the impermeability of the host rocks. VLF measurements revealed conductive anomalies at depths ranging from 26.4 to 60 meters, suggesting the presence of a potential aquifer. This layer is interpreted as coarse-grained sandstone intercalated with clay, overlying a claystone bedrock. Based on this interpretation, specific coordinates were recommended for drilling. The study concludes that the Bugel area possesses a minimum groundwater potential of 3,500 liters per hour with good water quality and a dissolved solids content of 24%. Drilling at the recommended site yielded coarse sand, confirming the existence of an unconsolidated aquifer with high porosity and sustainable reserves. Project sustainability relies on collaboration between the village administration and the local farming community. Future development plans propose storing extracted water in reservoirs for distribution via piping systems to irrigate agricultural land, thereby breaking the cycle of annual water crises and enhancing local economic resilience.
