Abstract

South Africa has recently experienced an increase in unrest within urban and rural communities, despite attempts from both government and business levels to engage communities through Community Engagement (CE) forums. This has had a negative impact on the operations of businesses in the mining industry in South Africa. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore CE challenges in the South African mining sector. The study used qualitative research methods where semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussion, were conducted among different stakeholders who were selected purposefully. The data were thematically analysed using the Atlas.ti software programme. The following themes were identified: Anglo Social Way, CE approaches, CE structures, guiding policies, terms of references, and municipality framework. It was recommended that community members needed to be educated on how the mine interacts with the community, its activities, and their participation as well as eliminating community unrest in order to improve communication amongst all stakeholders.

Abstract

Medokan Ayu Mangrove Botanical Garden is one of the ecotourism destinations, which is located on the east coast of the city of Surabaya, East Java. This ecotourism is managed by Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) Medokan Ayu in a conventional way. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of tourist visits was quite a lot, which was more than 100 visitors per week. However, Pokdarwis Medokan Ayu faced problems during the pandemic of COVID-19. The number of visitors to Medokan Ayu Mangrove Botanical Garden decreased by almost 90% especially on weekends during July 2021. This problem could be solved by promoting of the Medokan Ayu Mangrove Botanical Gardens online through the Pokdarwis.id website. This community service aimed to design and implement digital promotion using the concept of Business Model Canvas (BMC). This community service activity was carried out using training methods containing four stages: coordination with partners, training, mentoring, and evaluation. Based on the results of observations, ten Pokdarwis administrators were able to operate the Pokdarwis website by filling content calendar and doing copywriting. This training had a positive response from the partner, especially the administrators, who suggested that the PkM team continue to provide mentoring with website management. The ability of the ten Pokdarwis administrators has also increased as evidenced by the increase and variety of news on the Pokdarwis website, and the implication that the number of website visitors increased to 3,515 by the end of February 2023. The number of visitors to the Medokan Ayu Mangrove Garden from mid-2022 to the end of January 2023 averaged 1,500 visitors per month.

Abstract

Due to the increasingly intensive interaction between humans and the river, the riparian vegetation conservation program was implemented to keep the Bedog River sustainable. This program aims to provide awareness and a good understanding of the dynamic balance between human life and the river environment, especially the conservation of riparian vegetation as a river key system that can be done. To achieve these aims, three approaches were implemented, i.e.: 1) empowering SMPIT Alam Nurul Islam Yogyakarta as a pioneer of the school community concern in the conservation of riparian vegetation by forming a "riparian class" equipped with learning modules for practising plant identification and research on vegetation profile analysis, 2) disseminating the conservation of riparian vegetation concept through the introduction of river bio-monitoring method for students and group activities by cleaning out the trash while doing outbound in the Bedog River, and 3) the involvement of all parties in the conservation of riparian vegetation by holding several focus group discussions with teachers and communities around the Bedog River. As an outcome, ESD-based learning on the conservation of riparian vegetation is included in the Biology Subject at SMPIT Alam Nurul Islam Yogyakarta, particularly in practical work. Then, every time a school outbound activity is held on the Bedog River, it is always accompanied by a trash clean-up activity. Also, there are efforts to use the communal land next to the school as an educational forest along with riparian vegetation conservation land.

Abstract

Pitu Village, Pitu subdistrict located along the Bengawan Solo River in Ngawi, East Java, is one of the regions with a high risk of flooding due to human activities like as settlement and intensive agriculture along the riverbanks. This phenomena causes soil erosion and crop failure, which reduces the income of the Pitu local community. A rehabilitation strategy is required to resolve this issue, not only for the recovery of the riverbanks but also for the enhancement of the local community’s revenue. The objective of this community activity is to educate the public about the use of bamboo species in riverbank restoration (Dendrocalamus asper). Bamboo is selected because it has both ecological and socioeconomic benefits. This project was conducted between March and September of 2022 on the Grojogan riverbanks, Bengawan Solo River, Pitu Village, and Pitu Subdistrict. This exercise utilized Focus Group Discussion, lecture, and practice or training as its methods. The population of Desa Pitu might simply adopt bamboo species and cultivate them along riverbanks. The community and the community service team from the Silviculture Department planted 1,000 bamboo seedlings. The survival rate of bamboo plantations exceeded eighty percent, and new shoots grew swiftly (5–15 cm for 5 months). Training in bamboo growing and bamboo product processing improved their skills well. The community generates bamboo seedlings successfully through vegetative propagation. In addition, three local communities in Cebongan, Sleman, and Yogyakarta participated in a four-day bamboo processing training program. They were also producing some tables, chairs, and handicrafts with success (woven bamboo).

Abstract

BUMDes Cibadak Mandiri has stopped operating, so to revive it, it must be replaced by new management. The new management seeks a partner to restore and run the business. The "Dosen IPB Mengabdi" program in BUMDes Cibadak Mandiri aims to assist management in analyzing and evaluating previous management problems, determining business priorities, and motivating new management. The method used in analyzing the problem was a fishbone diagram with a participatory approach and used the brainstorming approach to determine priority business. Management, business unit leaders, and local participants attended the activity. The six main issues found were a need for more capability of human resources, capital, business partner responsibilities, unstructured organization/management, nonperforming loan, and lack of market understanding. Several alternatives were proposed by participants, such as gathering/workshops, training, looking for committed people, investors, and open recruiting volunteers. At the same time, the business priorities that should be carried out are karst mountain tourism, distribution and management of clean water (PAM), and bottled drinking water (AMDK). The methods were conducted to raise awareness of the new board and the role of related stakeholders, especially agreements in describing problems, alternative solutions, and choices of BUMDes business priorities. These processes give valuable insight into the current state of management to reactivate of BUMDes and alternatives action to tackle this situation

Abstract

The herbal drink in Indonesia has a fast development for its easy usage and minimum side effect. Some house plants have metabolite compounds with an important role as antiviral such as rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa), Curcuma domestica Val, Zingiber officinale, Cymbopogon citratus, and Pandanus amaryllifolius R. The purpose of our community empowerment activities was to introduce the benefits of house plants for supporting health, particularly as an antiviral during a pandemic. The method of community empowerment activities was carried out by explaining the example of home plants, their bioactive compound content, and their health benefits. The community was also taught to make simple and practical healthy drinks. The results showed that the community became more aware of the benefits of roselle and turmeric so that they did not doubt making a healthy drink to be consumed regularly during the pandemic. The results showed that about 85% of the community understood the benefits, and 90% were able to make herbal drinks. The conclusions of these community empowerment activities were going well. The community understood the benefits of house plants as an antiviral during a pandemic and succeeded in making simple healthy drinks from house plants.

Abstract

The prevalence of hypertension based on doctors’ diagnosis in D.I Yogyakarta Province ranks second highest at the national level as reported in the 2018 Basic Health Research. Hypertension prevention is an important pillar of public health, especially in at-risk populations. Hypertension continues to be a public health threat, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where patients with comorbid hypertension have a six times higher risk of dying if infected with COVID-19. During the COVID-19 pandemic, non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, are slightly neglected due to the focus on the COVID-19 pandemic. The offered solution is to conduct offline and online screening and education activities related to hypertension. This program aims to mobilize community empowerment to prevent a non-communicable disease, hypertension. Offline and online screening and education activities related to hypertension were carried out on 75 people in 3 RTs (RTs 3, 4, and 5), Prancak Glondong Hamlet, with on-the-job training for cadres. Based on the results of the program, 23% of the screening results showed normal blood pressure. In comparison, the other 48% were found with the ACC/AHA classified as type II hypertension during the examination, with the majority of the age range of 45-65 years (59%). Community development was carried out through job training with three cadres. This program can help reactivate the community empowerment. Health promotion carried out during this community service can increase awareness of non-communicable diseases, especially hypertension.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the habit of face-to-face offline learning to online learning using Information, Communication and Technology (ICT). This happens in all education units, including the Community Learning Centre (CLC). Community learning centre, as nonformal education unit, has flexible characteristics. Nevertheless, it still has the competitiveness to provide learning according to the needs of students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Community activities are voluntary-based, where technology uses are still partial and not optimal. For this reason, community service activities through the training aim to provide knowledge about how information, communication, and technology are used in data management and learning. This community service program approach was carried out qualitatively by conducting in-depth interviews with community samples in each district of Yogyakarta. The offline activity was attended by 20 participants from CLC in Yogyakarta City. With this direct training and workshop, community managers can practice using cloud storage for data management and use online conference and presentation applications to support the creation of learning media.

Abstract

Agriculture is claimed as Indonesia’s strategic pillar sector. The existence of a community-based enterprise with a traditional business model is often seen as a weakness, while social capital is a strength to thrive. However, a well-managed conventional business model can become one of the foundations of a sustainable livelihood. This community service program wass carried out with the Artha Mandiri Group, which is domiciled in Kemadang Village, Gunungkidul, Special Region of Yogyakarta. This program aimed to increase the economic resilience of group members by empowering and growing business capabilities with their social capital as their fundamental strength. The empowerment method used in this program was Participatory Action Learning and Action Research (PALAR), which is considered an effective tool for strategically transforming paradigms. This method focused on a balance between progressive, collaborative practice accompanied by an action research foundation. The 6-month program has resulted in collaborative business competency learning practice for group members, emphasizing different processing methods to produce business line diversification. This group made flour from land-owned rice paddy harvests with the same quality as commercially produced. This achievement can also have an impact on business cost efficiency.

Abstract

It is essential to manage waste in an integrated manner, beginning at the domestic and village levels. In fact, there are still a significant number of residents who throw trash carelessly. Jurangjero village, a village in Klaten Regency, Central Java, is an example of a village that does not adequately manage its waste. In addition, the village has agricultural waste issues that require optimal utilization, including rice straw. This community service program aims to increase public awareness of organic and inorganic domestic waste management and agricultural waste management so that they can be applied appropriately to the concept of the green village. The program’s methods included field observations, waste management outreach, and training. The training included the creation of organic fertilizers, eco-bricks, plastic waste containers, and straw paper. Farmer groups and farmer women’s groups have gained an understanding of the management of domestic organic waste into organic fertilizer and compost as a result of the outreach and training activities. Karangtaruna has also gained an understanding of inorganic waste management by applying the recycling concept, which entails transforming plastic refuse into plastic pots and ecobricks. They have also grasped the production of economically valuable art paper from rice stalks. The descriptive analysis revealed that the average pre-test and posttest scores were 55.58 and 76.67, respectively. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that this community service program has increased residents’ knowledge of managing domestic and agricultural waste to create valuable products. The support of the village administration is required for sustainable waste management and the continuation of empowerment initiatives.
