Recently, the value of arts studies in higher education level is often phrased in enrichment terms- helping scholars find their voices, and tapping into their undiscovered talents. IJCAS focuses on the important efforts of input and output quality rising of art education today through the experiences exchange among educators, artists, and researchers with their very own background and specializations. Its primary goals is to promote pioneering research on creative and arts studies also to foster the sort of newest point of views from art field or non-art field to widely open to support each other. The journal aims to stimulate an interdisciplinary paradigm that embraces multiple perspectives and applies this paradigm to become an effective tool in art higher institution-wide reform and fixing some of biggest educational challenges to the urban imperative that defines this century. IJCAS will publish thoughtprovoking interdisciplinary articles, reviews, commentary, visual and multi-media works that engage critical issues, themes and debates related to the arts, humanities and social sciences. Topics of special interest to IJCAS include ethnomusicology, cultural creation, social inclusion, social change, cultural management, creative industry, arts education, performing arts, and visual arts.

Abstract

Selective attention is increasingly challenged by distractions in modern higher education, and while instrumental music has been proposed as its aid, findings remain mixed. This study aimed to examine the effect of jazz instrumental music on selective attention compared to silence, and whether its jazz ballad (low-arousing music) and bebop (high-arousing music) styles differ in their effects—a distinction not previously investigated experimentally. Using a true experimental approach and pretest-posttest design, 40 college students were randomly assigned to either the jazz ballad or bebop group. Selective attention was measured via response time (RT) and error rate (ER) from a Stroop Test, with EEG attention scores as complementary neurophysiological indicators. Both groups showed significant within-group RT reductions relative to silence. However, only the jazz ballad group showed a significant ER reduction (p = .040), whereas the bebop group did not (p = .119), despite its significantly higher posttest between-group EEG attention scores (p = .001). No significant between-group differences were found for RT or ER. Drawing primarily on Late Selection Theory and Kahneman's Capacity Model, these findings suggest that the moderate arousal from low-arousing music may more optimally facilitate selective attention than higher arousal or increased alertness alone from high-arousing music.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dominance of music education in arts education practices in Manado Senior High Schools. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. The research sites focus on SMA Negeri 1 Manado and SMA Negeri 9 Manado, which demonstrate a strong tendency toward music education practices compared to other art disciplines. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations of arts learning activities, and document analysis. The findings suggest that the dominance of music education in the implementation of arts education in senior high schools in Manado is the result of a social construction process formed through three dialectical processes. The first is externalization, in which musical practices emerge from the choices and actions of actors within the school, such as policies supporting choir development, the provision of coaches, and institutional support for musical activities. These practices then undergo objectification as they are positioned as indicators of achievement and as representations of the school, particularly in the arts field. Finally, the process of internalization occurs, in which this constructed reality is accepted by all members of the school community—both teachers and students—as something natural, leading music to be perceived as the primary form of arts education practice in the school. These findings suggest that arts education practices in schools are not entirely neutral; rather, they are influenced by social dynamics, local cultural contexts, and institutional legitimacy that develop within the educational environment.
