Abstract

This study focuses on the way of parents involving themselves in supporting their children learn English. In order to encourage children to learn better as English language learners, some parents send their children to have a continual program in non-formal institutions after schooling time. A common reason is that parents have the low capability in training their children to speak English or at least utter some meaningful words or phrases. Small scale survey by using open and closed-ended questionnaire was conducted among respondents from two elementary schools in Palangka Raya, Indonesia. They were, first, parents whose children learn English formally in SDIT Al-Furqan Palangka Raya and MIN Langkai Palangka Raya and take English course privately at home or courses center, and, second, the children as students. The questionnaires are focused on the students’ attitude and motivation towards learning English and parents’ opinions and involvement in learning the process, mainly practicing English at home. The result offers teachers some important points to consider in the teaching of English, especially the way to work with children and to build a positive relationship with parents in the regard of better learning.

Abstract

The main purposes of this study are (1) to describe the implementation of contextual teaching and learning (CTL) in teaching English, and (2) to investigate the teacher’s difficulties in implementing CTL in teaching English at the seventh grade students of SMPN-1 Palangka Raya. It was used qualitative method. The subject of this study was an English teacher of SMPN-1 Palangka Raya. It was used observation, interview and documentation to collect the data, and for data analysis it was used data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The findings show that (1) the implementation of CTL implemented by the teacher was through some components of CTL which were applied more frequently than others. The questioning, learning community, and modeling were frequently applied. (2) The problems faced by the teacher were the condition of the students who still made some noise, the large amount of students in the class, little attention from the students, and the shyness from the students to speak up.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the English National Final Examination for Junior High School. Validity and reliability are the two kinds of characteristics of a good test which are concerned. Since the five packages of the test are the same in content and only different on the placement of the items, so it is considered to take only one package becomes sample. This study was analyzed by using the descriptive method. Content validity was analyzed by comparing the materials in the syllabus to the items of the test, and construct validity was analyzed by comparing the indicators in the syllabus to the items of the test. While the reliability was analyzed by using Kuder-Richardson Formula (KR20). The result of the study shows that the English National Final Examination for Junior High School was valid and reliable. The content validity shows 100% valid, and the construct validity shows 100% valid. While the reliability shows coefficient 0.89, and it is reliable. So, the English National Final Examination for Junior High School has fulfilled the characteristics of a good test.

Abstract

This study was designed to develop appropriate listening materials based on the needs of users namely the teachers and the students of the English Department of IAIN Palangka Raya. The Research and Development (R&D) design was applied in this study. The research subjects were four listening instructors and the first-semester students (freshmen) who encountered fourteen meetings of this on-going semester. The findings showed that (1) the stages of the listening materials development such as needs survey, developing materials, expert and instructors validation, revision, try out of materials, revision, and final product; (2) the product is in the form of compact disc recorded materials, an instructor’s guide, and a students’ worksheet; (3) the product consists of 14 units for semester 1; (4) the criteria for selecting materials are based on the existing syllabus and the criteria such as language, content, style of delivery, length, speed of delivery, attractiveness, practicality, level of difficulty and effectiveness; (5) the materials are appropriate  for the students since they are relevant to the students’ need, interest, and level of  students’ English ability; and (6) the listening activities can improve the students’ motivation to learn English.

Abstract

The study is intended to describe the methods of defining terms found in the theses of the English Foreign Language (EFL) students of IAIN Palangka Raya. The method to be used is a mixed method, qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative approach was used to identify, describe the frequencies, and classify the methods of defining terms. In interpreting and explaining the types of method to be used, the writer used qualitative approach. In qualitative approach, data were described in the form of words and explanation. The findings show that there were two methods of defining terms, dictionary approach and athoritative reference.

Abstract

In translating brochure, a translator has to make a decision on the basis of the message and purpose. The translator is faced by two strategies of translation – foreignization and domestication. The purpose of the study is to examine how the interrelationship between cultural term translation and foreignization or domestication strategy in the cultural term translation of tourism brochure from Indonesian into English. This study used qualitative descriptive with discourse analysis strategy. The note-taking technique is used to identify and classify the data. The objects of the study are tourism brochures from Province of Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java in 2015. The findings show that the translation strategies used depend on the translation process. When the cultural terms are familiar, translator tends to use domestication strategy and consider the target text. Translator chooses domestication strategy because try to make tourist understand the text and produce communicative and natural translation. On the other hand, when cultural terms are foreign, translator using foreignization strategy and consider source text. Using foreignization strategy, translator tends to introduce traditional cultural term.

Abstract

The study is aimed at investigating the effects of contextual meaning aspects on reading comprehension, and finding out whether or not there is effect of reading proficiency, consists of low and high, on reading comprehension and effect of contextual meaning aspects together with reading proficiency on reading comprehension. It was used experimental design in this study. The data were processed and analyzed according to these steps: giving the treatment, checking and scoring, tabulating, analyzing the data by using statistic technique of ANOVA, and making the conclusion based on the analysis. The number of the sample was 34 students of the students of English education study program of Palangka Raya University. The findings show that example clues considered as the easiest and appositive clues as the most difficult of three context clues in this study. Based on the result, it can be concluded that there is significant effect for contextual meaning aspects and reading proficiency on reading comprehension; however, there is no significant effect of contextual meaning aspects together with reading proficiency on reading comprehension.

Abstract

Many students do not like English debate. They argue that in the debate, they should apply four skills in English and should have appropriate matter, manner, and method. One of the reasons which make them do not like the debate is their lack of motivation. To solve this problem, teacher or lecturer should apply the appropriate technique in the teaching-learning process. Cooperative controversy technique is different with the traditional debate. In this technique, debaters change positions and try to reach a consensus at the end of the debate. By doing it before practicing the real English debate format, the students will get the basic knowledge about the debate so they do not directly practice the complicated one. Cooperative controversy increases the number of ideas, quality of ideas, feelings of stimulation, and enjoyment and originality of expression in creative problem solving. If it is compared to the group which does not use controversy, in controversy, the members get motivation and satisfaction in solving the problems.

Abstract

This study is intended to describe the quality of writing self-efficacy scale when it was applied in foreign language context. The design used is Correlational analysis by using Cronbach Alpha statistical tool. The participants of the study were 55 students of English Education Study program of STKIP PGRI Pasuruan who joined Writing II course and who were randomly chosen to fill out the questionnaire. The data were collected from 10 to 11 September 2014. The result of the study shows that the reliability is r = .785, lower than the reliability claimed by the maker (r = .9249). The possible cause of the reliability difference is discussed as well as the recommendation for future researchers.

Abstract

This study was a research and development (R&D) which is basically aimed at developing English instructional materials based on School-based Curriculum for the first-year students of MAN Model Palangka Raya. This study involved: need analysis, reference study, material development, expert validation, try out (empirical validation), and revision. The data were gathered through observation, questionnaires, interview, and validation technique.  The result of the need analysis shows that the students are in need of English instructional materials relevant to their major content needs and school characteristics. However, the existing English instructional materials used by the teachers and the first-grade students of MAN Model Palangka Raya as a senior high school with Islamic feature still served from available published course books which are too general and still do not reflect the need of the students and particular characteristics of the school. English instructional materials developed in this study is intended to develop English instructional materials which could provide a set of instructional materials to accomodate the Islamic characteristics and the needs of the first-year students of MAN Model Palangka Raya. For the purpose, the materials were adopted and adapted from some Islamic textbooks and Islamic reading websites.
