Abstract

This study was conducted in order to analyze the English formative tests made by the English teacher of grade VIII of SMPN-4 Mentaya Hulu based on the characteristics of a good test. The indicators to be analyzed were validity and reliability of the test. The validity covered the content and construct validity. The writer applied descriptive method in conducting this study. The population and sample of this study was the English teacher-made tests for the grade VIII of SMPN-4 Mentaya Hulu in the first semester of academic year 2008/2009. The writer analyzed 2 English formative tests as the representative of all English formative tests in the first semester of academic year 2008/2009. Based on the result of the data analysis, the writer found that the English formative test conducted on October 2008 belongs to high validity in its content validity and excellent validity in its construct validity. The English formative test conducted on November 2008 belongs to low validity in its content validity and high validity in its construct validity. While the English formative test both conducted on October 2008 and November 2008 are unreliable.

Abstract

This study was aimed at describing the types, the function, and the meaning of the compound words used in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight. A qualitative method with the content analysis was applied in this study. The object of this study was compound words. For the data collection, it was used the techniques such as data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. This study was validated by using triangulation. The findings showed that there are 253 compound words. Based on the type of compound words, there are 5 compound words categorized as open form, 65 compound words categorized as hyphenated form, and 183 compound words categorized as closed form. Based on the function of compound words, there are 173 compound nouns, 13 compound verbs, and 67 compound adjectives. Referring to the meaning of compound words found from the contextual meaning, there are 140 words of the exocentric compound and 113 words of the endocentric compound.

Abstract

Indonesian language or sometimes called Bahasa is the national language of Indonesia. It was derived from Malay language and established as a national language in 1928. Until now, the Indonesian language keeps borrowing words from other languages. It was questioned whether the language was actually a pidgin that authorized into a creole since it was not only contained of Malay language but also languages that it was made contact with since colonialism eras, such as Dutch, English, Arabic, and other languages. This research used library study to find the data since it was not possible to trace the data in the field. This study was aimed to determine whether the Indonesian language was categorized into pidgin or creole. The result of the study revealed that Indonesian was not either pidgin or creole since the characteristics features did not meet any of them. It is believed that the Indonesian language was one of the means to achieve independence, but it is opened to receive lexicons from other foreign languages as the words keep increasing each year that can be seen in Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI).

Abstract

The study is intended to develop Writing III Course materials using graphic organizers for the fourth-semester students of English Education Study Program of IAIN Palangka Raya. The Research and Development (R & D) design was employed in this study. It included the stages:  need analysis, description of the purpose, selection and development of material type, production of proto-material, production of pedagogical material, expert validation, field testing (trying-out), evaluation and revision (evaluation from try-out and the expert, and final product. The final product of this study was the instructional materials (six units for nine meetings) covering introduction to the essay (unit 1 for meetings 1-4), the illustration essay (unit 2 for meeting 5), the classification essay (unit 3 for meeting 6), the process essay (unit 4 for meeting 7), the comparison contrast essay (unit 5 for meeting 8), and the cause and effect (unit 6 for meeting 9). Each unit consisted of learning objective, topic, sub-topic, description, relevancy, and keywords. The materials serve for appropriate topics, clear models, stimulating learning, relevant activities, clear example, graphic organizers, and providing strategies.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find whether there was a significant difference between the students taught using authentic materials and the students taught using non-authentic materials on the students’ writing score. The quasi-experimental design was applied in this study. The population was all the tenth year students at MAN Model Palangka Raya. The samples were determined using purposive sampling. The samples were XA as the experiment group and XB as the control group. The collected data were obtained from test and documentation. The main data were analyzed using ttest formula and SPSS 17.0. The results showed that the mean of pre-test score in experiment group was 59.76 and the mean of post-test score was 72.9. The value difference of both means was 13.14. The mean of pre-test score in control group was 53.8 and the mean of post-test score was 58. The value difference of both means was 4.2. It means that teaching writing procedural text using authentic materials was more effective than teaching writing procedural text using non-authentic materials because the authentic materials taught was appropriate with the level of students’ ability in this study.

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating Indonesian-English code mixing in Raditya Dika’s Manusia Setengah Salmon, particularly to find out the word classes of the code mixing, the meaning of the code mixing, the dominant use of the code mixing, and the reasons for using the code mixing. Content analysis in qualitative approach was applied in this study. To collect the data, it was through data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that there are 65 sentences or utterances consisted English nouns as code mixing. They were categorized into countable nouns (87.69%), uncountable nouns (3.08%), abstract nouns (6.15%), concrete nouns (1.54%), and plural nouns (1.54%). Among them, countable nouns are more dominant than others. Also, three kinds of translating process found are: borrowing consisted of 25 sentences, literal consisted of 14 sentences, and adaptation consisted of 28 sentences.

Abstract

In Indonesian context, it is mostly found that reading material and its exercises examine of what have been explicitly discussed. Critical thinking is less introduced within reading texts and somehow it makes the students less understandable to know what is exactly meant by the author. However, when the students are able to think critically, they will also be able to connect between ideas and to solve the problems with logical reasons. From this reason, it is clearly seen that critical thinking should be introduced, for instance, through reading texts and its exercises. This article aims to present one idea that can be used to raise critical thinking by implementing a critical discourse analysis. Therefore, the relevant literature of teaching reading, CDA, the description of how the material is integrated with CDA and the teaching sequence will be described. It is expected that this article will have deeper insight and significant implication for some educational parties such as teachers and lecturers.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the patterns of Grammar Translation Method (GTM) and to know the reasons why the teachers used the method. Descriptive qualitative method was applied. The subjects were two English teachers at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Palangka Raya. It was used observation and questionnaires to collect the data. The data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing were applied for data analysis. The findings show nine major patterns of GTM applied: (1) The classes were taught mainly in mother tongue; (2) the vocabulary was taught in the form of lists of isolated words; (3) the grammar provided the rules for putting words together; (4) it focused on the form and inflection of words; (5) the reading difficult classical texts were begun early; (6) it was little attention to the content of the texts; (7) the drills were exercises in translating; (8) it was little attention to pronunciation; and (9) it focused on accuracy. Meanwhile, the reasons of the teachers used the method are: (1) It is suitable for the students; (2) it helps the students comprehend the text; (3) it  improves the vacabulary; and (4) by using this method teaching-learning activities work well.

Abstract

The study is aimed at investigating the effectiveness of using picture chart media on students’ English vocabulary. The study belonged to pre-experimental study by applying counterbalance procedure to collect the data. The study was conducted at the class VII-5 at the SMPN 1 Palangka Raya. The number of the sample was 40 students. This study was restricted to focus on teaching vocabulary especially in classification of vocabulary. To answer the research problem, the t test for correlated was applied. The research findings showed that teaching vocabulary by using picture chart media gives effect toward the seventh grade students’ English vocabulary. The mean score of posttest reached higher score than the mean score of pretest (X=57.105 < Y=84.79). Meanwhile, t test formula using manual calculation showed that the t observed was 15.036. By comparing the t observedwith the t table, it was found that the t observed was higher than t tableat 5% level significance or t observed =15.036 > t table =2.021.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover what extent of the students’ expectation of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) used by the English teacher in teaching English at senior high schools in Palangka Raya, Indonesia. A survey research method was applied. The survey was conducted at the four schools: MAN Model, MA Muslimat NU, SMAN 4, and SMKN 2 in Palangka Raya. To collect the data, the study employs the questionnaire with 10 items given to 134 students of the second grade taken from one class of each of the schools. It was used the cluster random sampling technique to take the samples. The items were designed for evaluating the factual, behavioral, and attitudinal condition of EMI in the English classroom. As a result of the study, it is shown that most of the students agree of EMI dominantly applied by the English teacher in the teaching of English subject. By implementing EMI in this classroom, it can increase students’ English ability with appropriate English standard, motivate them to learn English, improve their confidence to speak English, help them to comprehend English textbook or article, and assist them to understand the international culture.
