Abstract

This study is aimed at uncovering the students’ acquisition order of coordinating conjunction for then to seek the possible causes of such phenomenon. Quantitative approach with implicational scaling and qualitative approach with case study were employed with test, focused-group interview, and document analysis of some related textbooks as the instruments. A test consist of 70 questions about the usage of seven coordinating conjunctions in which each word is represented by 10 questions was given to the 13 students of eleventh grade of senior high school for the data collection related to the students’ acquisition order. The documents were then analyzed through several steps as suggested by the expert. The results show that the students acquire “and”, “so”, “for”, “but”, “or”, “yet”, and “nor” as in order. The external factors which influence the order are the formal complexity of each conjunction and the lack of exposure of coordinating conjunction both in the teaching activity and textbooks. Thus, teachers are suggested to provide more explicit teaching on coordinating conjunction and necessary knowledge about the usage of each word. Also, book writers should provide ample exposure to give students more knowledge about the usage of those conjunctions in a meaningful context.

Abstract

Arun Joshi presents socio-cultural conflicts between two different societies. One society is material driven and backed by the modern state apparatus like police, courts, etc. while the other is subsistence driven and is at the bottom in the hierarchy of the modern state. Indian tribal societies have been exploited right from the colonial period into the post-independence times. These two societies differ as follows: the tribal society lives on subsistence looks at Nature as a space for socio-economic, political, cultural and community, while the urban materialistic world perceives Nature as a resource to be exploited. This primordial difference has manifested as a socio-cultural conflict between these two societies. This may be due to the mutually exclusive and incorrigible nature of their social constructs which trigger perceptual obfuscation of symbiotic living.  What appears to be an objective reality for one appears as subjective to the other and vice versa. This paper studies the strangeness of Billy Biswas, the protagonist of the novel in the socio-cultural milieu of conflicting realities.

Abstract

The issues regarding the demands of creative, innovative, and professional teachers are certainly on the concern of stakeholders and practitioners in education. Substantial efforts were conducted by the government to meet the 21st-century teachers having the four competencies required for being a teacher and coping with the needs of modern education. A survey research was conducted to collect respondents’ opinion as the main source of data to describe whether the 21st-century teachers are on the demands and to gain information that the students have a similar perception to teacher’s competencies required by the government. Seventy-five questionnaires related to the competencies were given to students of English Education Study Program of 2013 to 2016. The questionnaires were aimed at collecting written information dealing with what the students perceived towards the activities implemented by teachers in the process of teaching and learning. The result of questionnaire analysis revealed that most students expected the 21st-century teachers to have skills in teaching and in connecting it with the development of today’s technology and today’s student characteristics. The data also showed that the students constructed the same characteristics of teacher’s competencies required by the government regarding pedagogy, personality, sociality, and professionality.

Abstract

This paper mainly investigates the benefits of the implementation of Reformulation and Text Modelling in an EFL writing setting. Reformulation and Text Modeling (henceforth RTM) is intended to help EFL students understand better how to write academic texts to make their texts sound as nativelike as possible. Therefore, RTM was implemented in a writing class in which 35 students participated as the respondents of the study. They were treated with RTM and their essays were then analyzed to examine the effects of the implementation of RTM on their writing products. Besides, this study investigated further the students’ perception towards RTM in EFL writing settings. The findings of this study proved that RTM is beneficial to improve students’ writing performances and students have positive perceptions on RTM. The implications of the findings for language learning are also discussed.

Abstract

In this research, children’s early understanding of the functions of print and parents’ mediation, talk about the purpose of writing, and their elaborative reminiscing talk was investigated in Persian preschoolers. The study was a mixed-method type of research. Preschool children (seventeen girls and thirteen boys) and their mothers participated in the study. In order to obtain data, they were involved in a task game (a grocery-list task) obtained from the experts and they discussed a past event together. Analyses of the obtained data revealed that children with better notating skills had parents who provided more assistance when notating and used more elaborative talk, but did not talk more about the purpose of writing. The results suggested that in pre-school years, what parents did and said may play a role in children’s symbolic, numeracy, and literacy development, although it did not relate to children’s mastery of the conventions of print. Finding this continuity is important because it helps researchers revise and bridge theories about parenting and children’s early literacy and numeracy and symbolic development.

Abstract

This study aims at developing writing materials based on Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach for Indonesian EFL learners. It adapted R and D development model proposed by Borg and Gall consisting of seven steps: research and information collection, developing a preliminary product, expert validation, product revision, field-testing/try-out, revision, and final product. On the basis of preliminary research and information collections result, the preliminary product was produced by considering the seven principles of CTL approach. From the expert validation, it shows that the developed material was on good criteria and eligible to be used as the handbook or instructional materials for Writing II. However, the expert suggested revising some points on making clearer instruction, reflecting the activities to the topic/subtopic, revising the typing errors, and arranging the spacing among the sections. After revising, it is tried out to the students. The result of the try-out shows that the product was categorized on good criteria. Based on the students’ comments, the content of the product had been already complete and interesting. The provision of more than one model texts made students understand the topic more easily. Next, the various activities provided (individual, peer, and group) made the materials more interesting.

Abstract

The study determined the effect of student-centered learning approach in teaching basic grammar of the tenth-grade students. Specifically, this study sought answers to following questions: 1). How does the result of the pre-test compare to that of post-test of the control and experimental groups? 2). Is there any significant difference in the results of the test between the control and experimental groups? 3). What is student-centered teaching guide in basic grammar that can be developed based on the findings of the study? It was applied an experimental research design in this study. The result in the post-test of the control and experimental groups showed that the computed the T value of 3.03 was higher than the tabular value of 2.03, at the degree of freedom of 34, at 5% level of significance. This condition rejects the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the mean scores in the post-test of the control and experimental groups. The student-centered teaching guide enhanced the students’ writing skill in the basic grammar of the tenth-grade students in the experimental group.

Abstract

This study concerns on metaphorical expressions in the book Ngawur Karena Benar written by Sujiwo Tejo and their nonliteral meaning. In finding the metaphorical expressions, researchers used the theory of metaphor. Otherwise, in analyzing the nonliteral meaning, it was used relevance approach. According to relevance theory, the process of interpreting a metaphorical expression comprises the following steps: decoding the linguistic input by arraying possible meanings of an utterance and drawing inferences by taking into account both the results of linguistic decoding. The problems are to answer: 1) what metaphorical expressions can be found in the book Ngawur Karena Benar by Sujiwo Tejo, 2) what are the meanings of the metaphorical expressions used in the book. This study applied qualitative research method by employing document analysis approach to get detailed data description from the object analysis. Results of this study revealed that the metaphorical expressions are used to deliver a complicated circumstance in revealing the real condition. In line with the finding, the nonliteral meaning of the metaphorical expression needs an intralinguistic that is the information we can receive by decoding the linguistic input while the extralinguistic factor is the assumptions taken from context by drawing inferences.

Abstract

This study aimed to portray how a school culture contributed to the learner success factors in e-learning in the middle school level. The ethnographic case study design was applied to explore the school culture and the e-learning success factors more deeply and holistically. The data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews. The cross-case analysis was used to interpret the data. The subjects of the study were four students who won in the national e-learning competition and the setting of the institution was in SMP Tentara Genie Pelajar (TGP) in Malang. The fundamental finding of the study, that might not be found in other research, was that the high-academic performance culture of this school gave an indirect contribution to the students’ e-learning success factors, such as the students’ motivation, the students’ e-learning self-efficacy, the students’ prior knowledge on the e-learning technical competency, and the students’ interaction and collaboration. This study gave a big implication because an ethnographic case study on the e-learning critical success factors might be never done in Indonesia before.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop Role-Playing Game (RPG) application as an alternative media in reading learning. The developed RPG application is based on Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC). The implementation of the developed RPG application is aimed to provide learning materials of reading skill in more attractive way to generate an innovative learning environment in which the students will not be uninterested in the learning process. The study is education research and development (R&D) which consisted of research and information collecting, planning, developing product form, expert validation, product revision, field testing and developing final product.  The subjects are the students and English teachers from one of vocational schools in Pati, Central Java, Indonesia. The instruments of this research are observation, documentation and questionnaire. Using qualitative and quantitative data analysis, the media developed contained some texts and it belonged to good category as the result of validation from material and media experts. After the developed media was used in reading learning, it was found that the students had positive response toward it. Thus, it can be deduced that the RPG application developed can be used as a media in learning process of reading skill.
