The Indonesian Journal of Occupational Safety and Health is an open access and scientific journal published by the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Airlangga, and supported by Indonesian Occupational Safety and Health Association (AHKKI) East Java Region, Indonesian Occupational Health Experts Association (PAKKI), and Indonesian Industrial Hygiene Association. The journal aims to publish original articles and review articles on recent developments related to occupational health and safety. Articles were published after a peer-review process with two reviewers and the editor. Since 2017, this journal is published regularly three times a year, in April, August and December. Since 2019, all articles have been published in English. This journal has been certified as a Scientific Journal by the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (RISTEKDIKTI) since October 3, 2022 valid through August 2026 (SINTA 2).

Abstract

Introduction: Surabaya Health Facility Security Center employees experienced anxiety during the Covid-19 pandemic. Anxiety is closely related to Work-Family Balance. The balance of roles between work and family is inseparable from family support. This study intended to analyze the relationship between family support and work-family balance. Method: This study used quantitative research with a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of employees at BPFK Surabaya. The sample included 74 pre-selected employees via simple random sampling. The variables in this study were family support (support from family members and family support for work) and Work-Family Balance (family work conflict (FWC), work family conflict (WFC), work family facilitation (WFF), and family work facilitation (FWF)). The data processing was performed using the Smart Partial Least Square test. Result: The study results indicate that there is a high value for family support of 62 (83.8%) and a high value for family support for work at 45 (60,8%). WFC was found to be low at 43 (58.1%), FWC was also low at 43 (58.1%), WFF was given as high at 52 (70.3%), and FWF was high at 54 (73%) respondents. The results indicate that there is a significant positive relationship between family support and WFB (p value = 0.008 <0.05). Family support for work has a significant positive relationship with WFB (p value = 0.027 <0.05). Conclusion: Family support (family support and family support for work) has a relationship with Work-Family Balance.

Abstract

Introduction: In mining production activities, haul dump trucks are utilized for transportation purposes and are driven by an operator. The haul dump truck operator works in a shift work system consisting of 12 working hours. The workers are required to always control the steering speed, causing potential work fatigue. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between mental workload and sleep quantity with work fatigue among haul dump truck operators. Method: This study was a quantitative research study using a cross-sectional design. The population was 179 haul dump trucks operators, while the sample was 123 respondents determined through simple random sampling. The variables of this study were age, years of service, education level, mental workload, sleep quantity, and work fatigue complaints. The data was tested using the Chi-Square test. The instruments used to obtain the data were the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index and the Work Fatigue Measurement Tool Questionnaire. Result: The haul dump truck operators (54.5%) had a high mental workload, low sleep quantity (61.8%) with less than 7 hours of sleep, and moderate fatigue complaints (44.7%). There was a significant relationship found between age (P-value = 0.018), years of service (P-value = 0.039), and sleep quantity (P-value = 0.001) with work fatigue complaints. The level of education and mental workload had a significance value above 0.05. Conclusion: Sleep quantity has a significant relationship with work fatigue complaints. This can be responded to by intensifying the information on the socialization of fatigue and the importance of maintaining the quality of sleep.

Abstract

Introduction: The Oncology Center Building is the part of Hospital X Surabaya that focuses on developing cancer services. As a type A hospital, Hospital X is required to have a preparedness program in the facilities and infrastructure for fire protection and prevention. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fire protection facilities and infrastructure in the Oncology Center Building of Hospital X Surabaya. Methods: This study was an observational study using a cross-sectional approach. The data analysis method used was descriptive. The primary data collection was carried out through interviews with the Hospital Occupational Safety and Health committee of Hospital X and the secondary data was in the form of profiles on Hospital X, as well as its policies, programs, guidelines, and SOPs related to fire prevention in Hospital X. Results: Active fire protection facilities and infrastructure in the form of fire detectors and fire alarms are in accordance with SNI 03-3985-2000. Meanwhile, other active fire protection facilities and infrastructure, such as fire extinguishers, hydrants, and sprinklers, are still not in accordance with the applicable policies because there are several elements that have not been fulfilled. The passive fire protection facilities and infrastructure are still not in accordance with existing policies because there are no walls, windows, and fireproof glass in the Oncology Center Building. Conclusion: The active and passive fire protection facilities and infrastructure in the Oncology Building, Hospital X still do not comply with the applicable policy because there are several elements of each fire protection facility and infrastructure that do not meet the specified standards.

Abstract

Introduction: Mold may affect the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in workplace dormitories. This study aims to investigate indoor air factors that affect molds growth in a dormitory of an LNG Company in Indonesia. Several indoor air determinant factors, including relative humidity, general temperature, wet temperature, dry temperature, air velocity, illumination, particulate matter, and carbon dioxide concentration were assessed against the growth of microorganism colonies. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study using a 2 (two)-stage Andersen sampler based on NIOSH 0800 Bioaerosol Sampling Method for Indoor Air Quality for viable bioaerosol sampling. Bioaerosol samples were collected from 50 indoor, corridor, and outdoor sampling points. The total colony count for bioaerosols (TCC) was then determined (CFU/m3). Ten indoor air quality parameters, i.e., relative humidity, general temperature, wet temperature, dry temperature, air velocity, illumination, particulate matter, and carbon dioxide concentration, were measured. Results: The average mold colony concentration in the dormitory rooms was higher (703.1 CFU/m3) than the maximum standard issued by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (< 700 CFU/m3) while the relative humidity was very high (84.4% RH on average), with a direct relation between the humidity and the mold colony concentration. A significant correlation was also identified between mold colony concentration, wet temperature, and CO2 concentration. Conclusion: Significant correlations between bioaerosols, relative humidity, wet temperature, and indoor CO2 concentration indicate insufficient ventilation and poor indoor air quality in the dormitory.

Abstract

Introduction: Workload and work fatigue are problems that often arise in a hospital. The unbalanced workload of nurses can cause work fatigue in the nurse workforce. If nurses experience work fatigue, the work motivation of the nurses will decrease, performance is low, work quality is low, there are many mistakes, low work productivity, work-related stress, occupational diseases, injuries, and work accidents. This study aims to analyze the relationship between physical workload and mental workload with work fatigue on nurses in the Emergency Room at Haji General Hospital Surabaya. Methods: This study was an observational study with a cross sectional study design. Conducted in the Emergency Room Installation of Haji General Hospital Surabaya with a research population of 30 nurses. The sampling technique was total sampling. The independent variable in this study is physical workload and mental workload while the dependent variable in this study is work fatigue. Data collection using direct measurement instruments in the form of a Pulse Oxy Meter, NASA-TLX and IRFC questionnaires with statistical analysis using the contingency coefficient test and the Spearman correlation test. Results: This study shows that physical workload has a very weak relationship with work fatigue on nurses (correlation coefficient 0.198) while mental workload has a strong enough relationship with work fatigue in acne (correlation coefficient 0.535). Conclusion: it can be concluded that physical workload and mental workload have a relationship with work fatigue on nurses in the Emergency Department of the Haji General Hospital of Surabaya. Keywords: Fatigue, mental workload, physical workload

Abstract

Introduction: Animal feed industry Sidoarjo is one of the companies in the animal feed manufacturing industry. The packaging unit is the last unit in the production process that packs the feed ingredients and arranges the finished goods. A location with the most safety hazards based on the work accident reports for 2010-2017 is in the packaging unit as many as 15.78%. The purpose of this research is to analyze the risk management of work safety in the packaging unit of animal feed industry Sidoarjo. Methods: Based on the data collection method, this research was included in observational research with a cross-sectional design. The subjects in this research were workers (37 people) in the animal feed packaging and the Health Safety Environment (HSE) units. The research was conducted at the packaging unit of Animaal Feed Industry, Sidoarjo, Indonesia in November 2019-June 2020. Results: Based on hazard identification, there were 15 hazards with a risk analysis of 53% moderate risk and 47% high risk. The risk evaluation obtained was including 53% tolerable risk and 47% intolerable risk. After controlling efforts, there was a decrease in the risk category. Conclusion: The residual risk obtained after controlling carried out experienced a reduction of moderate risk by 100% and high risk by 71%. The remaining risk was 33% moderate risk and 13% high risk.

Abstract

Introduction: Work fatigue can be caused of excessive workload and work capacity such as age and tenure. This study aimed to analyze the strength of the correlation between individual factors and mental workload with work fatigue on the Surabaya Patchouli Terminal crane operator. Methods: The study design is a cross sectional. The sampling technique taken was total sampling so that all populations were a sample of 30 people, consisting of CC and RTG operators in Nilam Terminal Surabaya. The independent variables are individual factors including age and years of service obtained from the questionnaire, mental workload which is assessed based on the NASA-TLX questionnaire, while the dependent variable is work fatigue measured using a reaction timer. The collected data were then analyzed using the Spearman correlation. Results: The results show 23 operators (76.7%) experienced heavy work fatigue and 7 operators (23.3%) experienced moderate work fatigue. Conclusion: The strongest correlation is mental workload with work fatigue and the weakest correlation is age with work fatigue. Meanwhile, correlation tenure with work fatigue is in between. It is recommended to provide psychological consultation once a week for operators.

Abstract

Introduction: Workers of swallow nest industry are at risk of experiencing musculoskeletal disorders due to monotonous swallow nest cleaning activity which puts heavy load on their extremity area of the upper body. This research seeks to analyze the relationships of age, gender, nutritional status, exercise habits, working hours, and working position with complaints of musculoskeletal disorders in swallow nest cleaning workers at PT. Lentera Alam Nusantara. Method: This type of research uses observational with a cross-sectional approach. The population in this study were all workers in the cleaning and washing section of swallow nests at PT. Lentera Alam Nusantara Surabaya, totaling 50 people. Determination of the number of samples using simple random sampling lemmeshow formula, obtained a sample of 36 workers. Results: The majority of workers are 35 years old, female, obese nutritional status, rarely exercise, have 8 hours of work, moderate work position, and the majority have moderate muculoskeletal complaints. Based on the analysis test results using the spearman test, it shows that the factors that have a significant p-value <0.05 include ages, gender, nutrition status, exercise habits, and working hours. Conclusion: Thus, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between age, gender, nutrition status, exercise habits, and working hours with complaints of musculoskeletal disorders.

Abstract

Introduction: Salesmen's job is focused on promoting a product directly to consumers. Household appliances are one of the products that is often promoted by salesmen. While carrying out marketing activities, they will always be faced with various job factors that can cause job stress. This research was conducted to analyze the correlation between job stressors and job stress levels among salesmen. Method: This research was observational research with a cross-sectional approach. Both population and samples of this research were 30 salesmen of household appliance trading in Kediri City. The sampling technique used was total sampling. Variables used in this research were job stressor including role conflict, role ambiguity, interpersonal conflict, job uncertainty, total workload, and mental demands with job stress levels. Results: The results showed that most salesmen experienced job stressors either in high, moderate or low category. Most of the salesmen experienced normal job stress level. There is relationship between job stressors consisting of role conflict (0.673), role ambiguity (0.455), interpersonal conflict (0.262), job uncertainty (0.683), total workload (0.526) and mental demands (0.859) with job stress levels on salesmen. Conclusion: An increase in job stressor conditions experienced by salesmen will be followed by an increase in job stress levels, and vice versa. Out of all, mental demands have the strongest relationship to job stress levels on salesmen. So it is necessary to make efforts to suppress existing job stressors so that an increase of job stress levels on salesmen can be prevented.

Abstract

Introduction: Sugar Factory (PG) Ngadiredjo is one of the manufacturing industry sectors where there are various stages of the production to process sugarcane into white crystal sugar. One of the risks of accidents in each production process is due to worker behavior. This study aims to analyze the strength of the correlation between awareness, motivation, and perception with safe behavior in engineering and processing section workers at PG Ngadiredjo Kediri. Methods: This research was an observational study with a cross-sectional approach. The sample of this study was 80 workers who were determined using the total population technique. Data collection techniques used questionnaires and safe behavior observations. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively using cross-tabulation and the Spearman correlation statistical test to determine the strength of the correlation between independent and dependent variables. Results: The results showed that most workers aged ≥ 36 years (42.5%), had a good level of awareness, good motivation, and fair perceptions. In addition, the results showed a strong correlation between awareness and perception with safe behavior and a very strong correlation between motivation and safe behavior. Conclusion: Based on the research results, there is a strong correlation between awareness and perception with safe behavior and a very strong correlation between motivation and safe behavior. The level of awareness, motivation, and perceptions of a worker will directly influence the level of his safe behavior.
