Abstract

The topic discussed in this paper is Figurative Language in four song lyrics from The Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness viewed from context of situation. Figurative languages may bring difficulties in understanding the kind of figurative languages contained in the song lyrics, but this study tried to find the actual meanings and the various kind of the figurative languages from the data source and that was the reason for choosing the topic “Figurative Language in Four Song Lyrics from The Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness”. The analysis is focused on two main problems: what types of figurative languages are found in four song lyrics from The Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness album and what are the meaning of figurative languages found in four song lyrics from The Smashing Pumpkin’ Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness album. The main theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) and supported by the theory from Leech (1974) were related to this research and useful to get the other information about the data. The conclusion of this paper showed that there were six kind of figurative languages found, there were: metaphor, hyperbole, simile, paradox, synecdoche and personification. Mostly from the four song lyrics above, Corgan used figurative language of metaphor and simile as his writing style to deliver his message to the listener. There were three kind of the theory of meaning found in this four song lyrics, there are: collocative meaning, connotative meaning and affective meaning.

Abstract

The so called ‘’Dead Portrait’’ statues are kind of archaeological remains from the Hindu-Buddhist period that is very much encountered in Bali. So far the sculptures of the much-studied are the statues made from stones, while the bronze statues are still very little known. This study examines the iconographical variation and its causal factors on the so-called bronze dead portrait statues collection of Bali Museum and BPCB Bali-Nusa Tenggara. The author uses data collection methods such as observation, interview and literature study and data processing methods through the analysis of iconography, iconometry, iconoplastic, and iconology. The theory used to refine the interpretation of the results of the analysis is the Theory of Iconography and Iconology of Erwin Panofsky. Based on the research results found that there are variations of iconography among the bronze dead portrait collection of Bali Museum and BPCB Bali-Nusa Tenggara. The iconographic variations can be seen in the variety of jewelry, dress, body, and body postures. The iconography variation itself is caused by the ability and creativity of artists, social factors, and religious factors and beliefs.

Abstract

So far, research on bells is only limited to the elements of form, function and meaning, so the author wants to do research on the bell lag based on metallurgical studies. This research took 6 samples of bell with details of 2 ancient bellies collection of Museum Blambangan, 3 ancient bell collections of Bali Museum, and 1 bell production today. The problem in this research is what are the elements of metal in each bell and how the influence of metal elements in alloy metal. The purpose of this study is to know the content of metal elements along with the percentage and the influence of metal elements in the manufacture of bells. This research uses data collection method, data analysis method and theory to answer the problem. Methods of data collection used are observation, interview, and literature study. Methods of data analysis used are elemental-quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis, comparative analysis, and ethnoarkeologi analysis. The theory used in this research is Metallurgical Theory. The study was conducted using XRF (X-Ray Flourescene) tool. The results of this test indicate that there are 7 types of metals detected: copper, lead, lead, iron, zinc, nickel, and titanium. Copper, lead, and lead metals elements are basic metals and iron, zinc, nickel and titanium elements may be accidentally or accidentally incorporated. Based on the size of the percentage there are 2 types of bronze metal binary alloy and tenoy alloy. Copper metal elements are added with a tin metal element to raise the hardness level of the alloy and lead metal to add to the liquefaction level of the alloy metal so it does not quickly harden and can produce objects with intricate ornaments.

Abstract

This researcher focused on the inscription of the reign of King Jayasakti mentioning the sources of empire’s income (d?wyahaji). The existence of d?wyahaji collected by the king through officers and for the benefit of the community. The purpose of this research is to know the types of d?wyahaji and its collection system. This study uses several methods of data collection, data analysis and theory to solve problems. Methods of data collection used are literature study, observation, and interview. At the next stage is processed by using qualitative analysis of interpretative and comparative analysis. The theory used as the basis of reference in this research is, functional structural theory and theory of tax collection. The results of this study reveal that the types of d?wyahaji are bungan tangklik, puspusana, tarub, aspaspan, pasang gunung, and pangrama, with the mechanism of d?wyahaji collection of karaman¸ area officials and the king's treasury.

Abstract

The discourse on the environment is now very hot discussed because of the destruction of forest areas in various countries, including Indonesia. In the life of Tenganan Pegringsingan Village community there is a mysterious mystery myth or Lelipi Selahan Bukit who is believed to guard the forest area of ??Tenganan Pegringsingan. The existence of these myths indirectly provide a good impact for the environment around for making forest sustainability in the region Tenganan Pegringsingan become awake. This study raises two issues, the first of which values ??of ecological wisdom contained in the myth of Lelipi Selahan Bukit and the second, how the myth of Lelipi Selahan Bukit in the life of the people of Tenganan pegringsingan Village. This study aims to reveal the myth of Lelipi Selahan Bukit as the ecological wisdom of the local community, in an effort to preserve the forest area. This research uses an ethnoecological approach that depicts the environment as seen by the community under study. This study uses the interpretive theory of Clifford Geertz in expressing local people's thoughts on the myth of Lelipi Selahan Bukit. The research method used is the ethnographic research model that goes into qualitative research by doing observation and interview.The results of this study answer two problems, first reveals the existence of hidden rationality behind the myth of Lelipi Selahan Bukit. The existence of this myth as an ecological wisdom is like a natural fortress that guards the forest area Tenganan Pegringsingan. Second, the emergence of critical thinking from persons who interpret the existence of this myth is not a seed of disunity, this difference of view can enrich the reference of meaning of a phenomenon that occurs in society.

Abstract

This undergraduate thesis is entitled Politeness Strategies Used in Ellen DeGeneres’s TV Talk Show with Barack Obama as the Guest Star. Ellen DeGeneres is an American comedian, television host, actress, writer, and producer. The aims of this study are to analyze the type of politeness strategies used in Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show script with Barack Obama as the guest star, and to identify the factors influence the choice of strategies.The data in this study were obtained from a talk show entitled Ellen DeGeneres. The process of collecting data was done through documentation method. The theories applied to support this study are theory proposed by Brown and Levinson (1978) used to analyze the types of politeness strategies, and also the same theories used to identify the factors influence the choice of strategy. The sentences which were used as the data were the sentences of the conversation applied the politeness strategy in script. Politeness strategies and the factors that influence the choice of strategies have a close connection to each other, whether when the speakers talks to female or male, have different social status, have a close relationship, or they always try to act politely in every situations. In two episodes of Ellen DeGeneres talk show with Barack Obama as the guest star the politeness strategy mostly applied in the positive politeness strategy. It also has the connection with the factor influence the choice of strategy.

Abstract

This study focused on the data of ancient Balinese inscriptions IX-XII century AD, some of the female figures were mentioned. The emergence of these female figures has important capabilities and roles in government. The purpose of this study is to find out how the status and roles of women in the economic field in the period of the ancient Balinese IX-XII century AD. This study used several methods of data collection, data analysis and theories to answer the problems. Methods of data collection used were observation, literature study, and interview. In the next stage, it was processed by using qualitative analysis, contextual analysis, comparative analysis, and ethnoarkeology analysis. The theories used as the basis of reference in this research were the theory of postfeminism, functional structural theory and commercial development theory. The results of this study reveal that the status and roles of women in the economic field during the ancient Balinese century IX-XII AD is as crafters, farmers, artists, and as traders. The roles of women at that time is seen in various processes namely the process of production, distribution, and consumption.

Abstract

Novel of Burung-Burung Migran by Miranda Harlan and Sutik A.S. is selected as the object of study for several reasons. First, BBM novel contains social issues of migrant workers' lives which is reflected in the story. Second, the novel of BBM tells a conflict how hard the lives of the migrant workers who are fighting for survival. The issues discussed are structural and social aspects of the lives of migrant workers contained in the BBM novel. The theory used in this analysis, namely structural theory that emphasizes the elements of the plot, characterization, and setting. Followed by the theory of sociology of literature that prioritizes literary text as a review in accordance with the theory of Sapardi Djoko Damono. Methods and techniques used in this study are three, namely: (1) methods and techniques of data collection, used literature review which methods and techniques used are the techniques of reading, record; (2) methods and techniques of data analysis used descriptive analysis and then proceed with reading and listening techniques; (3) methods and techniques of presenting the results of data analysis described in the format of a good and correct thesis writing. Based on the results of the analysis can be concluded that, according to Nurgiyantoro structure analysis includes three aspects namely, characterization, plot, and setting. Characterization is divided into main character and additional characters. The main character is Sutik, additional characters, namely: Yamin, Mak-Bapak, Asih, A Beng & A Nyi, Chow & Tessa, Bang Man, Sumiati. Characterization includes three elements namely, physiological, psychological and sociological elements. The plot is divided into three stages, namely the initial stage, middle stage, and the final stage. Chronological plot is used in the BBM novel. The setting is divided into three, i.e. the place, time, and social background. Setting of places, including: Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Setting of time is around the year of 1976-2010. Social background tells the society of Tretes Village. The moral aspects of migrant workers that were revealed in this novel is the problem of good and bad moral. The social aspect deals with Sutik's relationship with family, society, and individual. There are two aspects of education, namely formal education and informal education. The cultural aspect describes the behavior of people in Indonesia and in Malaysia. Economic aspects of the BBM novel reveal the problems of changed level of prosperity in the societies in which Sutik’s live in that is Tretes village.

Abstract

The title of this study is The Use of Modal “Must” and “Have to” in the Corpus of Contemporary American English. It aimed at finding structures and identifying meanings of the modals in the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). COCA was used as the data source on http://corpus.byu.edu/coca/. Documentation method was applied in collecting the data in this study. The data were identified, classified, and analyzed about structures and meanings of modal “must” and “have to” by the main theory of Quirk. The results show that the structure of modal “must” followed by verb classes is the most frequently used, second is verb phrases, third is adverbs, and fourth is indefinite pronouns and quantifier positions. The structure of modal “have to” that is followed by verb classes is also the most frequently used, furthermore is verb phrases. Meanwhile, the meaning of modal “must” expresses more messages than the meaning of modal “have to”. Modal “must” expresses a condition cannot be changed or unavoidable obligation, the obligation or necessity from inside the speaker, the idea of necessity, the logically necessary, and the wishes or intentions of the person one is speaking to. Modal “have to” expresses the obligation from outside the speaker, the idea of obligation or repetition, and the unavoidable obligation.

Abstract

The study entitled Code Switching in the Movie The Godfather by Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola is aimed at identifying and analyzing types and reasons for code switching which are found in the trilogy movie ‘The Godfather’. The data of this study are the trilogy movie adapted from novels by Mario Puzo; The Godfather (1972), The Godfather II (1974), and The Godfather III (1990), as long as the transcript of each movie transcribed Malta. Data of this study are in the form of utterances spoken by the characters found within the transcript and the movies. The is analyzed using the theory of types of code switching proposed by Poplack (Romaine, 1995), theory of reasons for code switching proposed Grosjean (1982), and theory of four factors which cause the change of codes and varieties proposed by Tripp (Grosjean, 1982). The data were collected by doing observation and documentation. The result of this study shows that three types of code switching, and nine out of ten reasons for code switching are found within the data; as well as four other reasons are found in the data using the theory of four factors which cause the change of code and varieties, they are (1) show close relationship between participants, (2) to convince or persuade other participants, (3) habit of using more than one language in conversation, and (4) show-off.
