Abstract

Skipjack Tuna (Katsuwonus Pelamis) is one of the big pelagic fish in fishery resources that has high economic value and plays an important role in export activity in Indonesia. Catch activities for consumption needs for people could threatened of Skipjack Tuna availability. The growth pattern of Skipjack Tuna is needed to used as references for the appropriate management plan to protect Skipjack Tuna. The research was conducted from February to April 2017 at PPI Kedonganan, Kuta District, Badung, Bali. The fish were collected by simple random sampling method. This study showed that gillnet and handline were used as fishing gears. The length frequency distributions were in the long-range of 315-337 mm means the catch fish is still young. The growth pattern of Skipjack Tuna was negative allometric means length growth was faster than weight growth. The growth parameters of Skipjack Tuna were obtained by the asymptotic length (Linf) of 875.2 mm, growth coefficient (K) of 0.09, and theoretical age (t0) of -0.78. Skipjack Tuna have small body size with condition factors were ranged from 0.8783-1.7269. It can be concluded that these methods can be used to determine the appropriate management efforts.

Abstract

Utilization of radar satellite data to monitoring vessels distribution in regard to combating IUU fishing is a newly developed in Indonesia. Ship detection using radar satellite data performed with high accuracy which is about 79% to the size of the boats between 24-81 meters (averaging 45 meters). However, information about accuracy of the radar satellites to detect small traditional fishing vessel are not yet widely available, and making this study is very important to conducted. The research was conducted at the west part of Belitung Island waters using RADARSAT-2 satellite data to detect vessels distribution which was acquired by radar ground station Perancak at October 25, 2016 and also using vessel position data which is acquired by using GPS tracker. There are 10 traditional fishing vessel was used as a sample, in accordance with the availability of GPS tracker. All vessels are made from wood with the size between 11 to 15 meter and using ‘bubu’ as a primary fishing gear to catch fish. Accuracy test was done using overlay analysis between vessel distribution information resulted from radar image analysis with the vessel position data coming from the GPS Tracker. Result showed that the accuracy of radar data on extended high incidence beam mode to detect the distribution of traditional fishing vessels with small size (11-15 meters) is about 30% and over estimate measuring between 7.5 to 8 meters.

Abstract

Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) is using for numerical modeling of hydrodynamic tidal water in west coast of Badung regency, Bali. The model result is validation with field observations data in the area using the equation Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). Field tidal data elevation of sea level elevation measurements were obtained by using the palm of tidal. Field data speed and direction of sea currents obtained using Lagrangian method. Excellent results obtained with RMSE values tidal elevation of sea level by 0.24 m dan RMSE values for sea current is 0.125 m/s. The results of model simulations show sea current patterns in the waters of the west coast of Badung regency, Bali relatively the same at the spring tide and neap tide conditions. The pattern of sea currents at high tide shows current vector that moves in toward the water of the west coast of Badung regency area from Bali Strait and the Indian Ocean. At the time of low tide sea current vector movement towards Bali Strait and the India Ocean. Sea current velocity in the eastern waters of the west coast of Badung regency (longitude of 115,05°– 115,17°) is higher than the sea current velocity in western waters area (longitude of 114,95°– 115,05°). Sea current velocity in the waters of the west coast of Badung regency on the condition of the spring tide range from 0.005 to 0.025 m/s, on the other side the sea current velocity on the neap tide conditions range from 0.005 to 0.012 m/s.

Abstract

Serangan Island is one of the tourism destinations in Bali which is administratively belong to the municipality of Denpasar. Tourism development near with the segrass habitat cause the segrass ecosystem being degraded in the waters of Serangan Island. This study was aimed to determine the diversity and conditions of seagrass species which were observed from the density and percentage of seagrass coverage and to examine the effect of water quality on the percentage of seagrass coverage. This research was conducted from February to March 2017 on Serangan Island using quantitative descriptive method. Sampling was conducted at three stations by taking data and samples of seagrass, measuring water quality (temperature, salinity, pH, turbidity, substrate observation) and analyze of nitrates and phosphates content. Seven types of seagrass species were found i.e. Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, Cymodocea rotundata, Halophila ovalis, Halodule pinifolia, Syringodium isoetifolium, and Thalassodendron ciliatum. The study showed that the diversity index value was in the medium category. The density of seagrass was classified as very tight (condition scale of 5). The highest density was found on Cymodocea rotundata spesies at station I about 777 ind/m2. The highest percentage of seagrass coverage (79,55%) was found in station I which classified as good condition, while station II and station III were classified as damaged condition with value 13.65% and 20,79% respectively. Finally, the water quality parameters have relatively low effect to seagrass coverage percentage.

Abstract

Shark is one of top predator that can define and control marine food chain. Shark breeding process is relatively slow and increase of catching activity has even given worse impact to shark population. Several endangered shark species has already protected the catch activity was banned. Some of them, such as Alopias superciliosus are found in Benoa and Kedonganan harbour. This condition happened because of not enough information and knowledge transfer to the local community about the protected species and catching regulation. Based on that information, the research about fishermen perception on shark conservation status and its correlation with the shark catch is important to be conducted. Data was collected using quisioner through interview approach. All the respondent is men with the age ranged from 16-67 years old, and 98% of respondent is labor. About 55% of the respondent graduated from elementary school. The result showed that the fisherman perception of shark conservation status categorized as good, while shark catch that is related with conservation in Badung district is categorized very good. The correlation of fisherman perception to shark conservation status with shark catching effort is negative, and significant to the shark catching effort (?=0,05) in Badung district. It means that if the fisherman perception to the shark conservation status in Badung district increased, so that the catch effort will be decrease.

Abstract

Water quality monitoring is one of important activity, especially in coastal water, which susceptive with pollution. Water area of Serangan Island is a tidal flat area, influenced by fresh water and sea water inputs. The existence activities, such as cage aquaculture and tourism, and input from river, are threatened to decrease the water quality in north of Serangan water. This research was conducted to the condition of water quality based on water quality standard for aquatic organisms and its spatial distribution. The parameters measured were temperature, salinity, pH, DO, turbidity, and BOD5, in 8 sample points. Some parameters measured directly on water surface (temperature, salinity, pH and DO) and the others were analyzed in laboratory (turbidity, and BOD5). BOD5 was analyzed by standard method of Delzer & McKenzie. Based on research, the result of temperature values ranged from 28,9°C-30,5°C; salinity 29,6 ppt-32,7 ppt; pH 7,7-7,9; DO 3 mg/L-4,4 mg/L; turbidity 1,9 ntu-7,6 ntu; and BOD5 2,8 mg/L-5,4 mg/L. The water quality in Serangan had a different spatial distribution in each parameters. Overall, based on research result, the water quality condition in the body water of Serangan island was good and suitable to support aquatic organisms living.

Abstract

The coral reef damage in Probolinggo region was expected to be caused by several factors. The first one comes from its society that exploits fishery by using cyanide toxin and bomb. The second one goes to the extraction of coral reef, which is used as decoration or construction materials. The other factor is likely caused by the existence of large industry on the seashore, such as Electric Steam Power Plant (PLTU) Paiton and others alike. Related to the development of coral reef ecosystem, availability of an accurate data is crucially needed to support the manner of future policy, so the research of coral reef coverage percentage needs to be conducted continuously. The aim of this research is to collect biological data of coral reef and to identify coral reef coverage percentage in the effort of constructing coral reef condition basic data on Binor, Paiton, and Probolinggo regency seashore. The method used in this research is Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method. LIT method is a method that used to decide benthic community on coral reef based on percentage growth, and to take note of benthic quantity along transect line. Percentage of living coral coverage in 3 meters depth on this Binor Paiton seashore that may be categorized in a good condition is 57,65%. While the rest are dead coral that is only 1,45%, other life form in 23,2%, and non-life form in 17,7%. A good condition of coral reef is caused by coral reef transplantation on the seashore, so this coral reef is dominated by Acropora Branching. On the other hand, Mortality Index (IM) of coral reef resulted in 24,5%. The result from observation and calculation of coral reef is dominated by Hard Coral in Acropora Branching (ACB) with coral reef coverage percentage of 39%, Coral Massive (CM) with coral reef coverage percentage of 2,85%, Coral Foliose (CF) with coral reef coverage percentage of 1,6%, and Coral Mushroom (CRM) with coral reef coverage percentage of 8,5%. Observation in 10 meters depth resulted in coral reef coverage percentage of 63,33%. 75% of living coral found on this 10 meters depth are dominated by Acropora branching coral, while the rest 25,21% are filled by Acropora tabulate coral and non-Acropora coral in the life form of branching, massive, sub-massive, foliose, and mushroom, where coral Mortality Index (IM) reached 28,5%. The high number of coral reef coverage percentage on Paiton is caused by successful coral transplantation and low activity of society in this location. The domination of large size Acropora branching coral were estimated comes from a few types, showing that coral resulted from transplantation has grown large and form a complex 3 dimension structure that is suitable for the life form of fish and living benthic.

Abstract

Benoa Bay is one of the unique ecosystems on the island of Bali because it is a shallow estuary area and has an ecosystem that is important for the waters of the mangrove ecosystem and seagrass. In recent years, Benoa Bay has been reported to have undergone siltation due to sedimentation. However, there has not been much scientific study of the sedimentation rate occurring in Benoa Bay. The study of sedimentation will provide an overview of the rate of sedimetation in the study area. Numerical modeling is one of the most commonly used methods to describe hydrodynamic processes in waters, which are the main drivers of the process of movement of pollutants in waters such as waste, sediment, and others. Thus, the study of sedimentation rate, either spatially or temporally, needs to be done in the waters of Benoa Bay using numerical modeling. The results of this study show that sedimentation rates in Benoa Bay have a minimum value of 1.08x10-6 and a maximum of 24.88 kg/m2/day with an average of 0.57 kg/m2/day. High sedimentation rates occur in the western part of the bay, on the river route, and in the northern part of the bay, between Serangan Island and Mertasari beach. Areas that potentially experience silting in Benoa Bay include the southern port of Benoa Harbor which reaches 0.23 m/year, the waters north of Serangan Island reaching 0.008 m/year, and the area close to the estuary which reaches 0.35 m/year.
