Abstract

This research seeks to investigate the study of slang discourse seen in the TikTok comment sections of East Kalimantan users. Slang is a kind of informal language that sounds very entertaining, trendy, and creative. Normally, the usage of the language is mostly by young people so that they can express their feelings, interact with others, and follow what is trending in the digital world. For this reason, this research aims to unveil what types of slang people use, its uses, and how it reflects identity and communication strategies. The research utilizes qualitative descriptive methodologies for data collection, which is gathered from TikTok comments and interviews conducted with eight users from East Kalimantan. The findings reveal that various etiquettes of slang are greatly influenced by both the world and local culture. Some popular terms include “anjay,” “gacor,” “slay,” and “rizz,” among others. Most users learn slang from TikTok and Instagram and extend it in a way that makes them sound modern, funny, or relatable. Slang also helps people feel part of a group and, at the same time, more quickly communicate their thoughts.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to compare the utilization of commissive acts in Grammarly and QuillBot advertisements on YouTube from a pragmatic perspective. In digital advertising, brands often use language to express commitments that influence viewer behavior. However, limited research has focused on how brands strategically use commissive acts to build trust and persuade viewers. This study specifically analyzes how commissive acts like promises, guarantees, and offers are utilized by Grammarly and QuillBot to convey brand commitments and influence viewer perceptions. A qualitative descriptive methods were applied to fourteen video advertisements (seven per brand) published between 2021 and 2025. Each commissive utterance was identified, categorized by type, and analyzed using the illocutionary force indicator device (IFID). The findings revealed 33 guarantees, 24 promises, and 4 offers in the Grammarly advertisements, while QuillBot displayed 14 guarantees, 11 promises, and 26 offers. In addition, ten informants participated in a Likert-scale questionnaire and semi-structured interviews to assess the clarity, persuasiveness, and credibility of commissive messages. The results showed that Grammarly tended to emphasize emotionally driven promises and assurances to build credibility, while QuillBot focused on functional offers related to academic tasks. The informants generally considered Grammarly’s commissive acts clearer and more persuasive, while QuillBot’s were perceived as practical but less emotionally appealing. The study concludes that commissive acts play an important role in digital brand communication and that pragmatic analysis provides valuable insights into how linguistic strategies shape audience responses.

Abstract

This research discusses semiotic analysis of political posters in the 2024 Indonesian Presidential Campaign. This research aims to identify and analyze icons, index, and symbols and find the meaning of their interpretation contained in the poster. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method using the semiotics theory proposed by Charles Sanders Pierce. In this research, the author first selected five posters from each candidate via the internet. Then, the author describes and analyzes the meaning of each sign on the political poster using Pierce's triangle. In this research, the author found the use of 18 icons in 15 data, 41 indexes and 48 symbols. The poster's use of color, layout, and text provide clues about the emotion it is trying to convey to voters, whether it is optimism, confidence, or a call for change. The results of these findings show that symbol signs are the type of sign that the authors found most often in this research.

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT) Method in improving the speaking ability of second grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Palopo. Task Based Language Teaching is an English language learning approach that uses tasks as the core unit of planning and teaching. In TBLT, students are required to understand the learning material that has been delivered by the teacher, then complete tasks that aim to encourage the use of the target language. This study uses a quasi-quantitative experimental method with data collection techniques in the form of pre-tests and post-tests. The research sample was selected randomly from the student population. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the experimental class using the TBLT Method and the control class using the conventional method based on the results of the independent T-test. Significant improvements were seen in the "Very Good" and "Moderate" categories in the experimental group compared to the control group. Student motivation factors also influenced the results of this improvement.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to examine the "comparison of the law on divorce outside the court from the perspective of Sadd al-zari'ah in the MUI fatwa and KHI." This study employs library research using a descriptive analysis method, which involves collecting, organizing, classifying, and interpreting data. The findings of this study reveal that the law on divorce outside the court, according to the MUI fatwa of 2012, states that such a divorce is valid if it meets certain conditions, including the presence of a shar'i reason, the wife's iddah period starting from the pronouncement of divorce, and a subsequent report to the court. In contrast, according to the KHI, as stipulated in Articles 115 and 117, divorce is only valid if conducted in the presence of a religious court hearing, making divorces outside the court invalid. The analysis of Sadd al-zari'ah suggests that the KHI's perspective is more relevant in preventing harm, such as ambiguity in marital status, administrative difficulties in marriage registration, and neglect of the rights of wives and children. Therefore, the MUI fatwa of 2012 requires reformulation to better align with contemporary contexts and minimize the negative impacts of divorces occurring outside the court.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation of culture-bound words in Okky Madasari’s novel Entrok and its English translation, The Years of the Voiceless. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method to identify the translation techniques used and to determine the dominant translation ideology applied in the translation process. The findings reveal that nine translation techniques were used in translating culture-bound words, with adaptation being the most frequently employed technique. The analysis also indicates that domestication is the predominant translation ideology, as most culture-bound words were translated in a way that makes them more accessible to the target language readers. However, some instances of foreignization were also found, particularly when preserving the original cultural meaning was necessary. This study contributes to the field of translation studies by providing insights into how culture-bound words are translated in literary works. Additionally, it has implications for translation education, as understanding these techniques and ideologies can benefit students and translators in dealing with cultural elements in translation.
