Abstract

Abstract    This research examines the psychological effects of language manipulation in George Orwell's Animal Farm using Van Dijk's sociocognitive approach. The study explores how language, through strategic manipulation, reinforces social control and psychological subjugation of characters at three levels: micro, meso, and macro. Using in-depth text reading and analysis methods, this study identifies linguistic structures, character interactions, and ideological constructions that contribute to the psychological effects on animals. At the micro level, word choice and sentence structure shape individual perceptions, instilling fear and encouraging obedience. At the meso level, social interactions between characters display emotional manipulation tactics that reinforce collective loyalty and obedience. The macro level highlights ideological changes in social structures, where language systematically conditions characters to accept unjust hierarchies as natural. These manipulative techniques cumulatively suggest that language functions as a tool of psychological control, influencing both individual cognition and collective behavior.

Abstract

The goal of the study is to contribute to the solution of research problems by identifying the issues with expressive speech acts through an analysis of emotional expression, relationship building, and self-identity. Particularly in this study that uses data from the Kung Fu Panda 4 movie, to differentiate between the various types of expressive illocutionary acts in the film, this study used a descriptive qualitative method, with data analysis based on Yule's (1996) theory. Six expressive types are identified by this study in films: doubting, anger, praise, joy, blaming, and regretting. 24 doubting, 21 angry, 17 praising, 13 joy, 12 blaming, and 9 regretting were among the 96 examples that were discovered. This study reveals important details about the expressive personalities in the movie in addition to speech act types.

Abstract

This study analyzes students' ability to apply translation techniques from English to Gorontalo based on the subtitles of the film "Orion and The Dark." A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing the translation techniques theory developed by Molina and Albir. A total of 261 data points were analyzed to identify the use of various translation techniques by students, including adaptation, transposition, reduction, and modulation. The results revealed that out of the 18 translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir, students only used 7 techniques. The findings highlight students’ limitations in understanding the cultural context of both the source and target languages, which contributed to translation errors. Furthermore, the study indicates that students' ability to apply certain translation techniques is influenced by their limited contextual understanding of the texts. The study also identifies semantic and pragmatic shifts in the translation process, which may affect text coherence and reader comprehension. This research contributes to the understanding of the application of translation techniques at the local level and recommends further development in the application of amplification techniques within target language translation.

Abstract

Research on web-based vocabulary learning applications has gained momentum in recent years, reflecting the growing interest in technology-enhanced education across Indonesia. However, a comprehensive understanding of how these studies have evolved and contributed to the field remains limited. This systematic review aims to analyze research trends on web-based applications for vocabulary acquisition in Indonesia from 2019 to 2024, focusing on the themes, methodologies, and outcomes reported in these studies. Following the PRISMA framework, 80 studies were identified from databases such as Semantic Scholar and Garuda. After duplicate removal and relevance screening, 42 full-text articles were reviewed, with 35 meeting the final inclusion criteria. The analysis reveals an increasing focus on platforms like Duolingo, Quipper, and Memrise, with many studies employing experimental methods to assess vocabulary improvement. Key trends include the integration of gamification and multimedia elements to enhance engagement and learner motivation. The review reveals an increasing focus on web-based vocabulary learning applications in Indonesian research from 2019 to 2024, with most studies adopting experimental designs to evaluate short-term learning outcomes. The findings highlight several applications such as Duolingo, Quipper, and Memrise are frequently employed, with positive effects on vocabulary acquisition through gamification and multimedia features. However, the research predominantly focuses on small-scale implementations, with limited studies exploring long-term impacts or usage in diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

The study examines the derivational suffixes, Nominal Suffixes found in the game “Final Fantasy VIII”. It focuses on analyzing the types and morphological processes, providing insights into linguistic structure of the game's language. Descriptive qualitative method was employed, which allowed for an in-depth exploration and elaboration of the data. The analysis was conducted in the framework proposed by Lieber (2009), with additional theoretical support from Plag (2003). The study identified 1,189 words containing derivational suffixes within the game. These suffixes were categorized into four types: nominal, verbal, adjectival, and adverbial. The findings revealed that nominal suffixation occurred in 1.189 instances, accounting for 47.7% of the total. Verbal suffixation was observed in 4 instances, representing a mere 2.0%. Adjectival suffixation was the most prevalent, with 391 instances, making up 42.5% of the identified suffixes. Adverbial suffixation was the least common, with only 2 instances, constituting 7.8 % of the total. The analysis highlights that adjectival suffixation is the most common type of derivational suffixation found in the game. This predominance of adjectival suffixes suggests a linguistic trend within the game's dialogue. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how derivational processes function in the context of video game linguistics.

Abstract

This study examines the speech development of SY, a 3.5-year-old child with speech delay, living in a bilingual environment with early exposure to screen time. Through a case study approach, data was collected via observations, interviews with SY's mother and therapist, and therapy records. Initially, SY displayed significant speech limitations, including omitting sounds, using incomplete words, and having a limited vocabulary. Factors such as frequent screen exposure and reduced direct interaction were identified as potential contributors to SY's speech delay. After six months of Speech-Language Therapy (SLT) led by an experienced therapist, SY has shown improvements in word completion, clearer articulation, vocabulary expansion, and social engagement. However, challenges remain in maintaining SY's focus during therapy sessions, a common issue for children his age. The study underscores the importance of early intervention, reduced screen time, and increased face-to-face communication in managing speech delays. Findings suggest that a structured therapy approach combined with supportive family interactions can effectively foster language development in young children, even in bilingual settings, reinforcing the role of active parental involvement in enhancing communication outcomes.

Abstract

Murals in the modern era can create interactivity with visitors (users) as a form of participatory description of societal phenomena, particularly murals at Living World Mall Bali (LWMB), which use the Bali garden concept. The aim of this study is to describe interactivity, visitor responses, and the implementation of the Bali garden concept in the murals at LWMB. To achieve these goals, the researcher applies theories and approaches from interactivity, aesthetics, color psychology, and education. The research method is descriptive qualitative, in the form of a case study. Research data include visitor behavior and responses, as well as the construction of murals with the Bali garden concept. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and document studies. Data analysis uses an interactive model, consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and verification/conclusion drawing. The research findings contain descriptions of visitor interactivity with the murals, including behaviors such as taking photos, appreciating aesthetic value, using the mural as an inspirational image medium, an information medium, a medium for conveying moral messages, and an educational medium by observing, touching, and documenting. Visitor interactivity with the murals at LWMB serves as a medium for inspiration, a means of conveying moral messages to promote cultural and environmental values of Bali, and an educational medium in the arts, fostering psychological comfort, a sense of brotherhood, and a spirit of mutual cooperation.
