Ilmu Biologi merupakan salah satu ilmu yang terus bertumbuh dan menjadi bagian yang penting dalam kehidupan. Ilmu Biologi mencakup kajian teori, penelitian hingga pendidikan Biologi menjadi cakupan ilmiah yang terus diteliti dan dikaji hingga memperoleh manfaat bagi kehidupan. Program studi pendidikan Biologi FKIP-UKI ingin memberikan wadah bagi para peneliti baik di dunia Ilmu Biologi maupun Pendidikan Biologi untuk mempublikasikan hasil kajiannya. Jurnal ini terbentuk pada tahun 2014 dan menjadi referensi bagi para mahasiswa dan peneliti lain dalam melakukan penelitian. Bidang spesifik yang dicakup dalam Jurnal adalah Pendidikan dan Ilmu Biologi. Cakupan/ fokus masalah yang dicakup dalam Jurnal antara lain Pendidikan, Metode Ajar, Tumbuhan, Hewan dan Lingkungan. Abstract

Pentol is a street food product made from a mixture of tapioca flour and chicken meat. The public widely favors it due to its palatable taste and relatively affordable price. In Depok City, Kelapa Dua Raya is one of the areas where pentol is commonly sold. However, pentol is at high risk of microbial contamination due to inadequate hygiene during the preparation process and its typical sale in roadside settings. This study aimed to determine the Total Plate Count (TPC) values of Pentol sold in the Kelapa Dua Raya area, Depok. The samples used in this study were pentol obtained from 5 different vendors with duplicate analysis and 8 serial dilutions. Samples were analyzed using the spread plate method on Plate Count Agar (PCA) medium with Buffer Peptone Water (BPW) as the diluent. Colony counts were performed in accordance with the Standar Nasional Indonesia (SNI) 2897:2008, with a countable range of 25–250 colonies per plate. The results showed that the average TPC values were 1.1×10⁷ colonies/g for sample 1, 7.3×10⁶ colonies/g for sample 2, 1.5×10⁵ colonies/g for sample 3, 6.8×10⁷ colonies/g for sample 4, and 7.9×10⁶ colonies/g for sample 5. Four samples, namely samples 1, 2, 4, and 5, exceeded the maximum threshold set by the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) Regulation No. 13 of 2019 at 1×10⁶ colonies/g, while only one sample met the standard

Abstract

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the most popular vegetables. The unchanged nutritional content is the reason for choosing lettuce to consume immediately. Coliform contamination exceeding the maximum human tolerance limit can cause various diseases; therefore, vegetable hygiene should be considered. This study aims to analyze the presence of Coliforms in lettuce from the Banyuwangi traditional market, with and without washing, and to detect E. coli and Salmonella spp. The method used was Most Probable Number (MPN) 5-5-5, and E. coli was detected on selective Eosin Methylene Blue Agar (EMBA) medium. In contrast, Salmonella sp. was detected on Salmonella Shigella Agar (SSA). The result of the Coliform test was obtained. MPN values on lettuce without washing (TC1 and TC2) were>2400 MPN/g, whereas those on lettuce with washing (C1 and C2) were 350 MPN/g and 46 MPN/g, respectively. Based on the results, it can be interpreted that each test sample does not meet the standard MPN value of >3 MPN/g. Detection of E. coli and Salmonella sp. yielded positive results in all test samples.

Abstract

Pempek is a traditional Palembang food widely popular among the public, but it is vulnerable to contamination by pathogenic bacteria due to the use of raw ingredients and unhygienic processing. One of the bacteria commonly associated with fish-based food contamination is Salmonella sp., which can cause foodborne diseases. However, studies specifically examining Salmonella contamination in pempek, particularly at the local level in the Ciracas area, are still limited. This study aimed to determine the presence of Salmonella sp. contamination in pempek sold in Ciracas RW 08, East Jakarta. This study employed a descriptive observational design with a laboratory-based microbiological approach to detect Salmonella sp. contamination in pempek samples. The tested samples consisted of two fried samples and two boiled samples. Identification of Salmonella was carried out according to SNI 01-2332.2-2006, which includes three stages: pre-enrichment in Lactose Broth (LB), selective enrichment using Rappaport Vassiliadis (RV), and identification on Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate (XLD) medium. The results showed that one out of four pempek samples tested positive for Salmonella sp. A positive result was from boiled pempek. Overall, 25% pempek samples sold in Ciracas, RW 08 were contaminated with Salmonella sp. We recommend the Salmonella test for both raw and cooked home industry pempek.

Abstract

Biodiversity plays an important role in supporting cultural practices and tradition within local communities, where various plant species are utilized not only for practical purposes but also for symbolic and spiritual meanings embedded in cultural rituals. This study aims to document and preserve the Balongdowo community's local ethnobotanical knowledge of plant use in the Nyadran tradition. The research was conducted through observation, structured interviews with key informants, documentation, and literature review. Data were analyzed descriptively following the stages of data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the Nyadran tradition involves various plant species used as components of offerings, ritual equipment, and symbolic elements. Nine plant species were identified, including pisang (Musa spp.), pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius), padi (Oryza sativa), krisan (Chrysanthemum sp.), melati (Jasminum sp.), kenanga (Cananga odorata), champaca (Magnolia champaca), kamboja (Plumeria sp.), and mawar (Rosa damascena). Each plant has a specific philosophical meaning related to fertility, purity, protection, gratitude, and spiritual connection with ancestors. The use of fresh plant materials also reflects ecological values and local conservation practices. Plants are obtained from homegardens and markets, with most species categorized as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Community involvement, including women and youth, contributes to the preservation of cultural values and the sustainability of ritual plants. This study highlights the importance of ethnobotanical approaches in understanding human–plant relationships and supports the conservation of both cultural heritage and biodiversity within coastal communities.

Abstract

Sustainable village development in Indonesia cannot be separated from the role of local wisdom as a social–ecological system that regulates the relationships between humans, the environment, and economic activities. This study aims to analyze the role of local wisdom in natural resource governance, particularly customary forests and their supporting ecosystems, in Kampung Arborek in Raja Ampat, Desa Panglipuran in Bali, and Kasepuhan Ciptagelar in West Java. This research employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method of relevant scientific articles, undergraduate theses, and academic journals. Data analysis is conducted through the perspectives of structural functionalism and symbolic theory to understand the social functions and cultural meanings of local wisdom within each community. The findings indicate that local wisdom serves as the primary foundation of social–ecological governance in all three villages. In Kampung Arborek, customary norms governing the use of marine and coastal resources function as mechanisms for ecosystem conservation and adaptation to tourism development. In Desa Panglipuran, customary regulations manage spatial planning, environmental management, and tourism activities, thereby preserving both cultural and ecological sustainability. Meanwhile, in Kasepuhan Ciptagelar, customary systems regulate the management of customary forests and traditional agriculture, contributing to food security and environmental conservation. Symbolically, local wisdom in these three communities shapes collective identity and environmental ethics by internalizing conservation values in everyday life. This study confirms that local wisdom is a strategic element in sustainable village development that is adaptive to modernization and external pressures.

Abstract

Tithonia diversifolia is widely found across various landscapes in Indonesia, from roadsides and neglected areas, and information on its use remains limited. This study aims to explain the botany, bioactivity, and secondary metabolites of T. diversifolia. This research is based on a review of online literature using the keywords T. diversifolia, uses T. diversifolia, and secondary metabolites of T. diversifolia. Tithonia diversifolia is a perennial shrub-like plant, growing to 1.2 – 3 m, easily recognized by its cup-shaped yellow ribbon flowers. The bioactivities of T. diversifolia include antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, and Alzheimer's disease treatment. Various researchers have reported that T. diversifolia inhibits the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, Corynebacterium diptheriae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Microbacterium foliorum, and Rhodococcus equi. Epicatechin and quercetin are promising antibacterial agents. The bioactivity of T. diversifolia as a microbial agent is more pronounced than that of other species, making it highly promising for development as an alternative antibiotic.

Abstract

Shrimp pond sediment is a biosolid waste that can degrade water quality but contains organic matter and nutrients that can be reused as organic fertilizer. Liquid pineapple waste (LCN) harbors indigenous bacteria that can serve as composting starters. This study evaluated the effectiveness of LCN-derived consortia in improving the quality of shrimp pond sediment–based organic fertilizer. A completely randomized design with six treatments (control, P1–P5) and five replications was used. The consortia were aerobically fermented for 30 days with sediment, leaf litter, rice husk charcoal, and LCN. Total N, P₂O₅, K₂O, organic C, C/N ratio, pH, and moisture content were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). The consortia significantly affected (p < 0.05) most parameters, except moisture content. Treatment P5 (15 isolates) produced the highest total N (3.44%), K₂O 2.70%, C/N ratio 9.47, pH 6.2, and organic C around 32–33%, whereas P3 (9 isolates) showed the highest P₂O₅ (2.39%); these values generally met or approached the Indonesian standard for organic fertilizer (Permentan No. 261/2019). LCN-based consortia thus have potential as local starters to improve shrimp pond sediment–based organic fertilizer, although further studies on salinity, heavy metals, and field performance are needed.

Abstract

Daun gatal (Laportea decumana (Roxb.) Wedd.) is a medicinal plant traditionally used by local Papuan communities as a physical therapy to relieve fatigue, muscle pain, and body aches. However, the ecological aspects of its cultivation remain poorly understood. This study aimed to compare the leaf morphological variables of daun gatal cultivated under shaded and unshaded conditions. Field observations were conducted alongside leaf morphometric analysis and examination of leaf trichome characteristics to strengthen the analytical results. The findings indicated that air temperature, air humidity, and sunlight intensity were positively correlated (~0.80) with plant height, leaf area, trichome length, and trichome density in plants grown under shaded conditions. Meanwhile, plant height and stem diameter did not differ significantly (P>0.05) between shaded and unshaded treatments. In contrast, leaf length, leaf width, and leaf area showed significant differences (P<0.05) between the two treatments. Trichomes of plants grown in shaded habitats were significantly longer than those in unshaded habitats (P<0.05). Trichome density exhibited a similar pattern, being higher in shaded areas than in unshaded areas, although the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Overall, this study demonstrates that the daun gatal exhibits morphological adaptations to variations in light intensity within its habitat, providing an important scientific basis for the effective management and optimal cultivation of Laportea decumana in Manokwari Regency.

Abstract

This study documents vegetation biodiversity in the secondary forest area of the PT Alhasanie coal mining concession, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, as part of the pre-mining environmental baseline survey. Surveys were conducted in 2024 using a systematic nested plot design, "strip plot," across four vegetation strata: tree DBH ≥20 cm; pole DBH 10–19.9 cm; sapling height ≥1.5 m; DBH <10 cm; and seedling (height <1.5 m). Species composition and community structure were quantified using the Importance Value Index (IVI). A total of 32 plant species were recorded. Paraserianthes falcataria dominated the tree stratum (IVI = 149.98), Macaranga gigantea dominated both the pole (IVI = 97.59) and sapling (IVI = 115.45) strata, and Eupatorium odoratum dominated the seedling stratum (IVI = 44.57). Across all strata, the vegetation is overwhelmingly composed of pioneer, disturbance-adapted, and invasive species; Dipterocarpaceae are virtually absent from the upper strata and represented only by a single Shorea leprosula individual in the sapling layer. These findings confirm a severely disturbed young secondary forest with a clear history of shifting cultivation and land encroachment—no protected species under Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. P.106/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/12/2018 were recorded. The survey results serve as the reference condition for environmental impact assessment and provide the ecological foundation for post-mining land rehabilitation planning.

Abstract

The knowledge gap between environmental ethics and the reality of microplastic pollution is examined through an interdisciplinary approach. Microplastic pollution has become a persistent and widespread environmental contaminant, with more than 170 trillion plastic particles estimated to be floating in the world's oceans. Recent studies show that microplastics have been detected in human blood, drinking water, and the global food chain. However, public awareness and policy responses remain behind the severity of the problem. Microplastic pollution is analyzed from ecological, toxicological, and social perspectives, while gaps in the understanding and implementation of environmental ethics are identified. Interdisciplinary approaches integrating natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and technology are also evaluated. The findings indicate that effective solutions require systemic transformation, including technological innovation, policy reform, a shift toward a circular economy, and changes in public behavior. Recommendations include strengthening interdisciplinary research with more standardized methodologies, implementing evidence-based regulation guided by the precautionary principle, adopting circular economy and extended producer responsibility schemes, and improving environmental education and public literacy. The conclusion emphasizes the urgency of collective action informed by scientific evidence and guided by ethical principles to achieve genuine environmental sustainability.
