Abstract

By optimizing social infrastructure, it is expected that changes will occur in the community. The aim of this research is to provide an important input regarding tourism development, especially halal tourism villages in Sampang Regency through optimizing social infrastructure in the community around Lon Malang Beach, Sampang Regency. One of the expected changes is the development of Bira Tengah Village as a halal tourism village. This research was conducted in Bira Tengah Village, Sokobanah District, Sampang Regency. The research employed a qualitative case study method. The research participants (IM, N, and MA) were selected according to the following criteria: 1) Residents of Bira Tengah Village; 2) Employed as tourism actors for at least one year. Participants were selected using purposive and snowball sampling methods. The data were collected through observations and interviews. The data then were analyzed by using the Miles & Huberman interactive model, starting with data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verifying. The validity of the data was assessed by testing its credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. This research found 3 themes, including: (a) The beginning of Lon Malang Beach; (b) Suboptimal social infrastructure; and (c) Limited knowledge about halal tourism villages. Suggestions for tourism stakeholders at Lon Malang Beach, including the Sampang Regency Government and the Sampang Regency Culture and Tourism Office, are expected to promote the development of halal tourism in Bira Tengah Village, Sokobanah District, Sampang Regency.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on tourism, making it difficult to predict demand. Researchers and policymakers are exploring ways to forecast tourism's recovery from the pandemic. The tourism industry could utilise virtual reality (VR) in addressing the negative effects of such pandemics. Despite the widespread interest in virtual reality, there are gaps in the empirical data on its acceptance as a recovery strategy. In particular, limited research exists on the perceptions and adoption of virtual reality tourism tools among young travellers in emerging economies such as South Africa, highlighting a regional and demographic gap in the literature. This study aims to identify the key factors that influence the acceptance of virtual reality as a recovery strategy for tourism post-COVID-19. A quantitative survey was conducted with 349 young travellers in Johannesburg, South Africa. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS 3 was utilised to analyse the relationships between perceived usefulness, ease of use, credibility, attitudes, and actual use of virtual reality while the sample profile was generated through SPSS 26. The findings revealed a strong association between attitudes toward using virtual reality for travel planning and the intention to adopt virtual reality for identifying travel destinations.

Abstract

While tourism has been widely studied across various disciplines, there is still limited research on the connection between tourism and corpus linguistics. The purpose of this study is to examine the types of tourism destinations and attractions in Indonesia by analyzing linguistic patterns in a large-scale corpus. The data source is the Leipzig Corpora Collection, comprising Indonesian language texts published between 2008 - 2018 (excluding 2014). Using the Master Plan of Indonesian Tourism Development 2010 - 2025 as a classification framework, this study identifies and categorizes tourism destinations and attractions based on occurrences of the word “wisata” ‘tourism’. The classification includes three categories: nature, culture, and man-made attractions. It is further divided into 10 classifications and 39 sub-classifications. The findings reveal that nature-based tourism is the most frequently mentioned category, comprising 499 instances (52%), followed by man-made attractions (38%), and cultural tourism destinations and attractions (10%). The most common reference made when talking about nature tourism is land-based tourism destinations and attractions, followed by marine waters, island, and geoparks. Through this research, we gain an understanding of how tourism destinations and attractions in Indonesia are represented linguistically and demonstrate the utility of corpus linguistics as a tool in tourism studies.

Abstract

The development of sustainable tourism requires an integrated approach involving collaboration between the government, private sector, local communities, and other stakeholders. This study analyzes the implementation of sustainable tourism principles in the Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark, a conservation area that carries geological, biological, and cultural heritage. Despite being designated as a National Geopark, Ijen still faces structural and policy implementation gaps that hinder its potential to contribute effectively to local welfare and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research utilizes a qualitative descriptive approach with data collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with stakeholders in Bondowoso and Banyuwangi, and analysis of relevant documents and policy regulations. Findings reveal that while Ijen Geopark holds significant natural and cultural potential, the management is still largely top-down, lacking local empowerment and participatory planning. The inconsistency in implementing the Regulation of the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy No. 9 of 2021 on Sustainable Tourism Destinations, and Presidential Regulation No. 9 of 2019 on Geopark Development, highlights a need for contextual planning and stronger alignment with sustainable development frameworks. Additionally, mass tourism trends, limited community involvement, and inadequate entrepreneurship development continue to pose challenges. This study emphasizes the importance of inclusive governance, education, and capacity building to ensure that conservation and development are balanced. Strengthening local participation and aligning tourism policies with SDGs can transform Ijen Geopark into a model of sustainable tourism that empowers communities, preserves heritage, and promotes equitable economic growth.

Abstract

Social media is one of the primary sources for Generation Z in seeking travel information and inspiration. This study aims to understand the relationship between social media usage goals and visit intentions, and to examine the moderating role of following social media influencers. The study used quantitative methods by distributing questionnaires to 212 respondents. Hypothesis testing was conducted using structural equation modeling (SEM) and multiple linear regression. The results showed that influencer source credibility positively influences the attitudes of social media users (Generation Z), increasing their intention to visit recommended tourist destinations. In addition, influencer following behavior strengthens the relationship between social media usage goals and visit intention. The findings provide insights for the tourism industry in crafting more effective digital marketing strategies, utilizing influencers as a more personalized and experiential promotional tool.

Abstract

Tourist villages have increasingly become a focus of academic and practical interest. Despite numerous studies, comprehensive analyses to uncover key contexts and topics remain limited. Indonesia, which leads in publications on tourist villages, offers a unique opportunity to explore strategies for enhancing its competitiveness. This study aims to review, synthesize, and advance the competitiveness of Indonesian tourist villages by examining theoretical frameworks, sustainability challenges, and strategic approaches. The combination of the approaches describes the novelty of this study. A systematic literature review analyzed 21 Scopus-indexed articles from 2023–2024, selected based on open access and journal publication criteria. The review highlights that most research focuses on Java-based villages, utilizing theories like social capital, sustainable tourism, and community-based tourism. Results show that the key success factors for tourist villages include collaboration and cultural preservation, while challenges span economic, social, cultural, and environmental dimensions. The study emphasizes the potential of analytical tools like VRIO and PESTLE to help identify competitive advantages and address vulnerabilities. These frameworks provide actionable insights for improving resilience and ensuring the sustainable appeal of tourist villages in Indonesia. By addressing these critical aspects, the study offers valuable guidance for enhancing the long-term viability and success of tourist villages as a cornerstone of Indonesia’s tourism industry.

Abstract

Restaurants are now not only places to eat but also for gathering and business purposes. Product and price are no longer the main factors; restaurants must offer quality service, a comfortable atmosphere, attractive design, and enjoyable experiences to satisfy tourists. This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis and test the sensory marketing dimensions (touch, aroma, taste, hearing, sight) on the satisfaction of Indonesian tourists at the Pantjoran Tea House restaurant in Indonesia and the Guoxiang Siji Farm restaurant in Hainan. Customer satisfaction is measured by five indicators: product quality, price, service quality, emotional factor, and convenience. The method used in this study is a quantitative method with data testing using Partial Least Square (PLS) software, through the SmartPLS program version 3.2.9. The population and sample in this study were customers who visited the Pantjoran Tea House restaurant and the Guoxiang Siji Farm restaurant, with an age range of 17-50 years, and a total of 300 respondents. The results of this study found that the application of sensory marketing at the Pantjoran Tea House restaurant only had one variable that had an influence on the satisfaction of Indonesian tourists, namely the olfactory/aroma dimension, which means that each aroma component is by the expectations of Indonesian tourists in the concept of a Chinese restaurant. Meanwhile, at Guoxiang Siji Farm, sensory marketing in all dimensions affects tourist satisfaction except the auditory dimension

Abstract

Ciletuh Geopark has a unique local gastronomic potential that supports food security, namely Hanjeli (Coix lacryma-jobi). To maximize the potential and opportunities for local gastronomy development, a gastro-tourism ecosystem is needed to develop. This study aims to identify key components, assess potential, observe current conditions, and opportunities for developing a sustainable gastro-tourism ecosystem. The research was conducted in Hanjeli Tourism Village, Waluran District, Sukabumi. The descriptive qualitative method with thematic and narrative analysis are needed to explain the findings. Primary data were collected through focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and documentation analysis. The research findings indicate that Ciletuh possesses a highly promising and distinctive value proposition for establishing a gastro-tourism ecosystem. There are 12 sub ecosystems that have been inventoried and there are 4 sub ecosystems that are ready to support the ecosystem, namely product value, tourism offerings, destination appeal, and marketing strategies. However, key components such as the income, investment, human resources, infrastructure, and supporting industries require greater attention and involvement from various stakeholders. The conclusion obtained shows that high effort is needed in developing gastro-tourism in Ciletuh. The most important thing to start developing an ecosystem is raising public awareness of the existing tourism products and values, which is essential for fostering a sustainable gastro-tourism ecosystem in Ciletuh.

Abstract

One of the leading tourist objects in Ambon, Indonesia, is the beach tourism of Hukurila Village. The potential of coastal, fisheries and marine resources and community support are the important assets in its beach tourism. Behind the potentials there are still shortcomings, and they are necessary to improve. An important question to study is how is the model for managing beach tourism in Hukurila Village, Ambon? The survey was conducted on a sample size determined from tourists, tourism area managers, and the village's government through incidental sampling and snowball sampling techniques. Data were analyzed by using the system dynamic model method with seven supporting methods. The results showed that: a dynamic system model for managing beach tourism in Hukurila Village, Ambon can be built from data of the number of tourist visits, the carrying capacity of the area, the carrying capacity of tourism utilization, the suitability of beach tourism, the economic value of tourism, and the willingness to pay of tourists. Simulation and validation of the model show that all data or variables used are valid. The model is dynamic and produces four policy programs that is: increasing the number of tourists visits every year, increasing the quality and quantity of tourism products continuously according to the carrying capacity of the area or the carrying capacity of utilization, gradually increasing tourist tariffs, and making a breakwater in the coastal tourism area. Assistance is needed in implementing policy programs so that the mission of becoming a sustainable tourism village can be realized in Hukurila Village.
