Abstract

This study aims to determine whether or not there is a connection between the Hawthorne effect, which describes the tendency of individuals to change their behavior when they feel that they are being monitored, and the Sufi concept of muraqabah, which describes the spiritual comprehension of being viewed by Allah. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not there is a connection between the two. On the other hand, contemporary psychology focuses an emphasis on outward observation as a behavioral stimulant, but Sufism encourages interior, divine awareness as a type of self-purification. Sufism is a faith that was developed in the Middle East. This study employs a qualitative hermeneutic and transdisciplinary method in order to provide an explanation for muraqabah, which is defined as the absorption and transcendence of the Hawthorne effect within the context of Islamic spirituality. Muraqabah appears to be a more credible and authentic method to the process of self-transformation, according to the findings of the study. The examination of society is not the basis for this method; rather, it is predicated on a continuous divine consciousness. Developing more comprehensive and spiritually grounded forms of Islamic psychotherapy is achievable via the merging of Sufi principles with Islamic transpersonal psychology. This opens up new options for the development of Islamic psychotherapy

Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of Living Qur'an in the community of tariqat in West Java, which shows that the acceptance of the Qur'an is not limited to textual interpretation, but is also manifested in the form of rituals and spiritual practices rooted in local traditions. The purpose of this study is to describe the pattern of reception of Qur'anic verses in three popular institutes, namely Tijaniyah, Qadiriyah, and Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah, as well as to examine the interaction between sacred texts and Sundanese cultural traditions in daily life. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method, through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies on the religious practices of the tarekat community in three districts: Garut, Cianjur, and Tasikmalaya. The results of the study show that each tarekat has a typical pattern of reception of the Qur'an in the form of wirid, prayer, dhikr, and ritual processions such as tawasul, istighatsah, manaqib, haul, and tanbih. Local traditions, such as ngabungbang, Friday night Kliwon, and haul commemorations, also influence the form and meaning of these religious rituals. The conclusion of this study is that the verses of the Qur'an live in the spiritual praxis of the tarekat community through the integration of religious texts and local cultures. The novelty of this research lies in the contextual analysis of the interaction of the reception of the Qur'an with local cultural expressions in three tariqat at once, which has not been widely explained in the study of Living Qur'an in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Hajj pilgrimage requires balanced physical and mental readiness; therefore, psychological assistance is an essential component, particularly for elderly pilgrims who are vulnerable to anxiety prior to departure. This study aims to analyze the role of health services at Wonosalam Public Health Center in providing psychological assistance to Hajj pilgrims using the Donabedian model and to interpret the findings from an Islamic psychotherapy perspective. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through passive participant observation, interviews with Hajj health officers, and documentation, while data analysis was conducted based on three aspects of the Donabedian model: structure (input), process, and outcome. The findings indicate that psychological assistance contributed to improved emotional calmness, mental readiness, and self-confidence among Hajj pilgrims, supported by standard operating procedures, adequate facilities, and competent health personnel. Nevertheless, the study also identified limitations in the depth of psychological asesmen, as the assistance has not yet involved professional psychologists. The implications of this study suggest that psychological assistance for Hajj pilgrims should not be viewed merely as an administrative health service, but rather as a form of Islamic psychotherapy that strengthens spiritual resilience and inner tranquility. The originality of this research lies in integrating the Donabedian service quality evaluation model with an Islamic psychotherapy perspective within primary health care services for Hajj pilgrims.

Abstract

This study examines how inclusion in houses of worship shapes self-concept and psychosocial support among people with disabilities in Bandung, while also identifying accessibility barriers and the role of disability organizations. Using a qualitative design with purposive sampling, the study engaged people with disabilities, religious leaders, community members, and disability advocates, and conducted observations across 32 mosques. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document review, then analyzed using thematic coding. The findings indicate that religious experiences can foster self-acceptance and a more positive self-concept, and provide meaningful emotional and psychological support through gratitude, hope, and community reinforcement. Nevertheless, religious participation remains constrained by inadequate physical accessibility, communication barriers (especially the need for sign language), limited access to inclusive religious education (e.g., braille or tailored assistance), and social isolation intertwined with economic constraints such as transportation costs. The study also reveals that religion is not always the primary driver of change; rather, it often functions as a form of metamotivation after basic needs are met, while group solidarity more frequently emerges from shared disability experiences and organizational support. The study implies the need to strengthen accessibility standards in houses of worship, expand sign-language services and braille/disability-friendly materials, and enhance collaboration between local government, religious institutions, and disability organizations to create safe, equitable, and psychosocially supportive worship environments. The originality of this research lies in linking worship-place inclusion, religious metamotivation, and psychosocial support within an urban Bandung setting through multi-site observation.

Abstract

The development of knowledge on mental health indicates that psychological and spiritual factors are closely interconnected in shaping an individual’s balance. This article aims to analyze Abdurrauf As-Singkili’s perspective on dhikr and its relationship to the enhancement of mental health in modern society. The methodology employed in this study is a literature review that examines Abdurrauf As-Singkili’s major works, particularly those related to tazkiyat al-nafs, dhikr, and suluk, as well as explores modern literature concerning psychosomatic issues and mental health. The findings reveal that dhikr plays a significant therapeutic role, serving as a means of emotional stabilization, strengthening spiritual awareness, and developing psychological resilience. The regular practice of dhikr can reduce anxiety, manage stress, and foster inner tranquility through the mechanisms of hudhur al-qalb (presence of the heart) and muraqabah (spiritual awareness). These findings highlight that the integration of spiritual values, particularly through dhikr, can serve as a comprehensive approach to addressing mental health problems. Therefore, the understanding of dhikr according to Abdurrauf As-Singkili is relevant as a supportive model of spiritual therapy for contemporary society.

Abstract

The transition to adulthood (emerging adulthood) is a period that is prone to quarter life crisis. If allowed to drag on and not adaptively regulated, it is possible that the crisis period will have a negative impact on the physical, psychological, and spiritual state of the individual. Therefore, a way to deal with this is needed, especially from the perspective of Islamic (sufistic) psychology. The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the understanding of Imam Junaid al-Baghdadi's self-talk theory (Musyawarotun Nafsi) in an effort to overcome the quarter life crisis. This research uses a qualitative approach, with data collection techniques in the form of literature studies. The data presentation method used is descriptive- analytic. The result of this research is that according to Imam Junaid al-Baghdadi, humans have three elements of the soul, namely lust, qalb, and spirit and aql. Lust is the source of mental disorders in humans. Therefore, the three elements need to be harmonized in order to be balanced. Musyawarotun Nafsi (soul-talk) or self-talk by Imam Junaid al-Baghdadi is a way that can be done to balance the three elements. In conclusion, Imam Junaid al- Baghdadi's self-talk can help individuals to recognize their problems, recognize themselves, and recognize their God. It has the concept of focusing on improving current and future circumstances, so conceptually Imam Junaid al-Baghdadi's self-talk can be applied to deal with quarter life crisis.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Fazlur Rahman’s neo-Sufism as an ethical-transformative paradigm of contemporary Islamic spirituality. This topic is important because modern society faces spiritual and moral crises marked by materialism, alienation, anxiety, and the weakening of social responsibility. This research uses a qualitative library-based method by examining Rahman’s major works, especially Islam, Islam and Modernity, Islamic Methodology in History, and Islamic Modernism: Its Scope, Method and Alternatives. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed using qualitative content analysis with a hermeneutical-contextual approach. The findings show that Rahman’s neo-Sufism reorients Sufism from individual asceticism toward social ethics. Through his double movement hermeneutics, Sufi values such as sincerity, ascetic restraint, patience, trust in God, and purification of the soul are reinterpreted as moral principles relevant to modern life. These values do not only function as instruments of inner purification but also as foundations for self-control, moral integrity, social responsibility, and public ethics. The study implies that Rahman’s neo-Sufism can contribute to the development of Sufi psychotherapy, Islamic counseling, religious moderation, and Islamic social ethics. The originality of this study lies in its formulation of Rahman’s neo-Sufism as an integrative framework that connects inner spirituality, moral hermeneutics, psychological healing, and social transformation.

Abstract

This study examines Sufism (tasawuf) as a spiritual ethical framework for environmental conservation, arguing that the ecological crisis is also rooted in a crisis of meaning and moral consciousness. Employing a descriptive qualitative literature study, data were collected through systematic reviews of classical Sufi texts and contemporary works on Islam and ecology, and analyzed using close reading, thematic interpretation, and conceptual comparison. The findings highlight three main results: (1) Sufi ecology is grounded in the tauhid–khalifah–mizan framework, which interprets nature as sacred signs (ayat kauniyah), positions humans as trustees, and emphasizes balance; (2) inner transformation toward pro-environmental behavior operates through tazkiyah al-nafs, zuhud, and qana’ah, which regulate the ego-driven impulses underlying overconsumption and waste; and (3) relational ethics and practical implementation are reinforced by mahabbah–rahmah and internalization practices (muraqabah, gratitude, wara’), which can be institutionalized through education, faith-based communities, and sufficiency-oriented economic practices. The study implies that conservation efforts may become more sustainable when supported by spiritual character formation and social institutionalization of Sufi values. The originality lies in proposing an integrative model linking theological foundations, inner-change mechanisms, and social implementation pathways of eco-Sufism, offering an operational basis for environmentally oriented Sufi psychotherapy/Islamic counseling.

Abstract

his study aims to formulate Mind Healing Technique (MHT) of Indonesia as a transpersonal-sufistic model of consciousness-based healing. The study is motivated by the growing need for a holistic healing framework that does not reduce psychological suffering to clinical symptoms alone, but also considers existential meaning, spiritual disconnection, and the purification of the self. This research employs a qualitative-conceptual design through library research and thematic-conceptual analysis. The data were drawn from transpersonal psychology, consciousness studies, spiritually integrated psychotherapy, Islamic psychotherapy, and classical Sufi literature on fitrah, nafs, qalb, maqāmāt, and tazkiyat al-nafs. The findings show that MHT reframes healing as a transformation of consciousness from Ego–Amarah–Keinginan (E-A-K), which represents egoic reactivity, anger, and desire, toward Suci–Murni–Bijak–Tenang (S-M-B-T), which represents purified, reflective, wise, and serene awareness. This movement is interpreted as a contemporary operationalization of tazkiyat al-nafs and a return to fitrah through maqāmāt such as taubah, zuhud, sabr, tawakkal, and riḍā. The study implies that MHT may contribute to Sufi psychotherapy, Islamic counseling, and holistic mental health as a complementary psychospiritual framework. The originality of this article lies in its conceptual integration of transpersonal psychology and applied tasawuf through the E-A-K and S-M-B-T structure as a psychospiritual map of healing.
