Abstract

Amid the pressure-filled flow of modernity, Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani's concept of zuhd offers a new perspective on achieving psychological well-being. This study explores the intersection between the teachings of Zuhd al-Bantani and the six dimensions of psychological well-being developed by Ryff. Through qualitative analysis based on the literature study, a positive correlation was found between the concept of zuhd a l-Bantani and increased psychological well-being. The three main components of zuhd - perception of divine support, orientation to the afterlife, and total acceptance of life experiences - play a significant role in building self-acceptance, environmental mastery, and personal growth. Zuhd also encourages forming positive relationships with others and provides a clear purpose in life. This study suggests that the implementation of zuhd can be an effective strategy in dealing with contemporary psychological challenges, offering a balance between spirituality and mental health. These findings pave the way for further integration between classical Sufism teachings and modern psychological approaches, providing a holistic alternative to improve quality of life amidst the complexities of the contemporary world. This study's implications could revolutionise the approach to psychological well-being by integrating classical spiritual wisdom into contemporary mental health practices.

Abstract

The epistemology of Sufism, as a bridge between rational knowledge and spiritual experience in Islam, has long fascinated Muslim thinkers. This research reveals the complex layers of thought of Ibn Arabi and Al-Ghazali, two Sufi figures whose thoughts have resonated throughout the centuries. Through in-depth analysis of their monumental works, this study reveals how these two figures navigated the sea of ma'rifah (intuitive knowledge) on different ships but headed to the same port. Al-Ghazali, with his kashf compass, sailed carefully between the currents of the Shari'a and reality, while Ibn Arabi, with his Wahdat al-Wujud sails, sailed a wider horizon, embracing the winds of Greek and Bathiniyah philosophy. This research not only maps their spiritual routes, but also explores how the knowledge maps they drew are still relevant in the navigation of contemporary spirituality, offering a new compass for seekers of meaning in the modern era.

Abstract

A research conducted by Leuba (1925) mentioned that the religious level of psychologists are at the lowest level in compared with academic`s circles in other scholarly fields. This is due to the paradigm of positivism that tends to eliminate radically the metaphysical dimension of psychic. As the result they could not understand the meaning of religiousness. On the other hand, there is a paradigm of Islamic psychology which is currently growing rapidly which has an integral character, both at the level of ontological, epistemological, axiological and methodological. Thus, Islamic psychology is considered capable of answering the psychological and theological moslems phenomenon at the same time. This research tries to express the teological dimensions of Islamic psychology as well as it role in improving the faith and self transcendence. The methodology that used in this research was the library research with the descriptive analysis approach. The result of this study indicates that the Islamic psychology have at least tree important roles in improving the faith and self transcendence. First, Islamic psychology has a theological dimension that serves as media that is most representative to knowing the God (The immanent). Second, as science Islamic psychology has four functions to improving the faith and self transcendence, namely: ta`rif al-nafs (description), tarbiya al-nafs (pedagogical and prevention), muraqaba al-nafs (rehabilitation), and taqwimal-nafs (prediction). Third, ma`rifat al-nafs (knowledge of al-nafs), could strengthen the roots of individual faith. Fourth, Islamic psychology has a role in growing self transcendence which is theoanthropocentric oriented.
