Abstract

MUZAKKI, F. A., CHIKMAWATI, T. & HARTANA, A. 2020. The resurrection of Schizostachyum biflorum McClure (Bambusoideae). Reinwardtia 19(2): 93‒96. ‒‒ Based on newly collected specimens from Mount Salak referable to Schizostachyum biflorum, made it justifiable to recognize this species as different from S. iraten Steud., to which formerly it was synonymized. A complete description of S. biflorum, a comparative tabulation of the morphological features that distinguished it from S. iraten, and figures of the two species are presented.

Abstract

MEHMUD, S. & ROY, H. 2020. Anatomical studies on Wallichia nana Griff., a wild palm of Assam, India. Reinwardtia 19(2): 97‒102. ‒‒ The present communicated research is a study based on the observation of free hand transverse section of leaf, stem and root and epidermal morphology of lamina in Wallichia nana, a species distributed in North-eastern states of India. Occurrence of paracytic stomata was noted on both surfaces of the lamina but comparatively more on lower surface. Number of metaxylem vessel recorded in lamina is single whereas, one to two in stem, petiole and roots. Presence of mucilage sacs recorded in the cortex of both petiole and stem.

Abstract

ARDIYANI, M., ARDI, W. H., SANTOSO, W. & POULSEN, A. D. 2020. Etlingera tjiasmantoi (Zingiberaceae), a new species from Central Sulawesi. Reinwardtia 19(2): 103‒108. ‒‒ A new species of Etlingera, Etlingera tjiasmantoi Ardiyani & Ardi, was discovered at Tentena, Central Sulawesi, and is described here. This species resembles Etlingera flexuosa A.D.Poulsen and Etlingera mamasarum A.D.Poulsen & Ardiyani but differs from both in having thecae dehiscing through their entire length and in the obovoid, glabrous and spineless fruits. The DNA barcode data, the line drawings of flower and fruit and the plate of E. tjiasmantoi were presented.

Abstract

SALASIAH, M. & MEEKIONG, K. 2020. Plagiostachys strobilifera var. conica, a new variety from Sarawak, Borneo. Reinwardtia 19(2): 109‒116. ‒‒ The new taxon varies from Plagiostachys strobilifera var. strobilifera in the broader lanceolate leaves, the bilobed ligule, the longer calyx, the rounded anther crests, the oblong lateral staminodes, and the non-free apical bracteole with conical apex (which gives the taxon its epithet). A key to species of Bornean Plagiostachys is also provided, along with a conservation assessment.

Abstract

ATRIA, M. & VAN WELZEN, P. C. 2021. The Calamus javensis (Arecaceae: Calamoideae) complex in historical biogeographic context. Reinwardtia 20(1): 1−7. — Calamus javensis is a very polymorphic species with a number of recognisable forms (of which several were once even recognized at species level). A historical biogeographic analysis showed no historical distribution pattern in the diversification of these various forms. The forms are very likely the result of adaptation to local circumstances, whereby more or less identical forms can develop under similar niche circumstances in disjunct areas, exceptions are the ‘acuminatus-polyphyllus’ form and C. tenompokensis that are recognisable and present in a non-disjunct area.

TURNER, I. M. 2021. An updated synopsis of Ludwigia (Onagraceae) in Malesia. Reinwardtia 20(1): 9–16. — A synopsis of the seven native or naturalised species of Ludwigia (Onagraceae) occurring in Malesia is presented. The newly established Ludwigia leptocarpa is included. The paper incorporates a key to the species, synonymy and typification. Lectotypes are designated for 25 names, including five at the second step.

Abstract

VICTORIANO, M. 2021. A new species of Nepenthes (Nepenthaceae) and its natural hybrids from Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia. Reinwardtia 20(1): 17–26. — A new species of Nepenthes (Nepenthaceae) from Aceh Province, Indonesia, Nepenthes longiptera Victoriano is herein described and illustrated. The species is unique among all other Nepenthes in Sumatra by the presence of wings on its upper pitchers. Comprehensive description, photographs, geographical distribution and preliminary IUCN conservation assessment are provided for the new species. Hybrids of this new taxon with other species are also reported in this paper.

Abstract

NAIR, S. S., BACHAN, K. H. A. & EBIN, P. J. 2021. Diversity and phenetic study on syconium of Ficus L. (Moraceae) from Kerala, India revealing natural classification along with an identification key. Reinwardtia 20(1): 27–36. — Ficus L. commonly called ‘figs’ is one of the most complex genera among the angiosperms with its specialised inflorescence called syconium that looks like a fruit. Syconium of 33 species of Ficus reported from Kerala were observed here to develop a novel key, solely based on syconium morphology. Numerical taxonomic methodology for syconium morphological characters were standardised, considering 22 characters with 104 character states and analysed using similarity clustering. The floral features of the genus are very much complex and all the existing keys for the species identification relays on both vegetative as well as floral features. Hence, the present key will be practical in use when syconium is the only available part. The numerical analysis of the syconium features well clustered and separated the trees with cauliflorous inflorescence, hemi epiphytic -epiphytic life forms and independent trees similar to the natural classification of the figs as “Atthi, Itthi and Aal”, indicating that phenetic analysis using the syconium characters alone provided a grouping similar to the natural grouping based on the habit. Preliminary phylogenetic analysis of figs also provided a similar clustering. This gives an insight into the fact that the separation of figs into these natural groups is reflecting phylogenetic trait. Detailed studies including more morphological traits and molecular analysis could establish the phylogenetic relation of figs in relation to the evolutionary history of climate and vegetation.

Abstract

ARDI. W.H., GIRMANSYAH, D. & HUGHES, M. 2021. Begonia robii, a new species of Begonia from Lima Puluh Kota, West Sumatra. Reinwardtia 20(1): 37–41. — A new species of Begonia sect. Jackia (Begoniaceae), B. robii Ardi & Girm., is described from West Sumatra and is a limestone karst endemic in the Tanah Datar dan Lima Puluh Kota Regency. Its provisional IUCN threatened category is considered to be Endangered.

Abstract

WIDODO, P. & VELDKAMP, J. F. 2021. The confusing taxonomy and nomenclature of Syzygiun confusum complex (Myrtaceae). Reinwardtia 20(2): 43‒49. ― The taxonomic and nomenclatural confusions surrounding the Syzygium confusum complex are elucidated. For that purpose, type specimens are designated and circumscriptions are presented for each species. Typifications, newly characterized descriptions and illustrations are presented for Syzygium korthalsii Widodo, S. confusum (Blume) Bakh.f., S. blumei (Steudel) Merr. & L.M.Perry, S. insigne (Blume) Merr. & L.M.Perry. The new species Syzygium sipirokense Widodo & Veldkamp is described.
