Abstract

Thirty specimens of Rattus collected from Gag Island, Papua were compareddirectly with two specimens from Gebe Island, one from Salawati Island and sixspecimens from mainland of Papua. All cranial, dental, dentary and external characterswere measured and analysed using multiple regression and discriminant function.The multiple regression showed that only incisive foramina length was influenced bysexual dimorphism. Discriminant function analysis indicated that the form from Gagisland was different from the other populations collected from mainland of Papua,Gebe and Salawati, and thus was described as Rattus nikenii sp. nov.

Abstract

Eiglit genera of lndo-Australian butterjiies: Algia. Algiachroa, Cirrochroa, Cupha, Phalanta, Terinos, Vagrans, and Vindula are presented here. These genera together with two Afrotropical genera: Lachnoptera and Smerina, and a Central American genlls Euptoieta were previollsly placed as subiribe uncertain.One-hundred adult morphological characters were scored for fifty-four taxa, and were analyzed simultaneousuj (Nixon and Carpenter, 1993). The cladistic analysis showed that all species were properly assigned to monophyletic genera, and the arrangement of the outgroup taxa is in concordance with the classification previously suggested. The eight lndo-Australian and two Afrotropical genera belong to the tribeVagrantini within the subfamily Heliconiinae.Key words: Heliconiines, Vagrantini, Indo-Australian, butterflies

Abstract

Green turtle (Chelonia mydas L.) tend to have their nesting sites in sunken places above high tide mark on sea shore which are gently sloping into deep water. Sand particles form more than 90% .and the remaining are dust and clay particles. The particles can be classified as fine to medium size. Mineral fractions of sand in the nesting sites are varied, it depends on its parent material. Quartz is one of the.most significant component on turtle nesting sites. Vegetasion along the beach where turtles build their nest are usually composed of Pandanus tectorius and Ipomoea pescaprae.

Abstract

The morphological variation in the ebony and silver leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus auratus and T. cristatus) from Southeast Asia; Thailand, Malaya, Bintan, Sumatra, Serasan-Natuna, Kalimantan and Java were studied using multivariate analysis approaches. The results showed that clinal variation in skull; dental and dentary morphology was found in Java. The skull; dental and dentary characters showed an increase from West to East with Central Java as an intermediate fonn. Consequently, in Java there should be only one subspecies, T. a. auratus. Meanwhile, there are fourmorpholgical groups of Trachipithecus cristatus, those are of Thailand, Malaya-Sumatra-Kalimantan, Bintan and Natuna. The Malayan population, presumably is the same as Bintan population while Sumatra-Kalimantan forms an intermediate.

Abstract

Host specificity has been a major factor in generating the tremendous diversity of phytophagous arthropods. Studies of adaptation to introduced or invasive plant species provide an opportunity to investigate incipient evolutionary changes in host specificity. We investigated the cryptic ability of the Asian tropical herbivorous ladybird beetle Henosepilachna diffinis to feed on the fabaceous weed "centro", Centrosema molle, which was introduced to Southeast Asia about 200 years ago. In laboratory choice tests using this plant and the normal host plant, Solanum torvum, adults preferred S. torvum to centro, but over half the beetles tested ate leaves of both plants. Furthermore, most first-instar larvae accepted centro during a rearing experiment, and a few of them grew to the third-instar stage, though none reached the final (fourth) instar. Henosepilachna diffinis likely acquired this incomplete acceptability of centro without any direct host-grazer interaction with centro, probably before this weed was introduced to Southeast Asia. Our results further suggest that another Henosepilachna species, H. vigintioctopunctata, might similarly have already acquired an incomplete ability to use centro when this beetle encountered it for the first time, and this triggered a subsequent host-range expansion from solanaceous plants to include centro in various parts of Southeast Asia.

Abstract

The scales of Latimeria menadoensis has a variety of the shape of the scales from oval, rectangular, footprint, elongated-pointed edge etc. The comparison in the portion of the exposed and embedded part of the total length of the scales of Latimeria menadoensis and Latimeria chalurnnae at the approximately similar part of the body i.e. scale on the dorsal region and scales located on the region extending lateral posteriorly until caudal, indicated that this portion is different. In L. chalumnae the exposed part are one third and the embedded part are two third of the total length of the scale. The exposed part in the L. menadoensis are more than one third (average 35.9% of total length), while the embedded part are less than tioo third, but 011 the other part of the body i.e. dorsal lobe fin, the embedded part was 73.9% or approximately three [ourth of the total lellgth of tile scale. The 175 loose scales were also examined and discussed.Some of the loose scales ioere examined 1111del the scanning electron microscope (SEM) by using two kinds of preparations. Abstract

Four species of the genus Macrocheles belonging to the family Macrochelidaewere reported from Raja Ampat, Waigeo Island, West Papua, including M. timikaensisHartini & Takaku 2006 and M. dispar (Berlese 1910) as new record to the Island. Twonew species and the deutonymph of M. timikaensis Hartini & Takaku 2006 are described.
