Abstract

Collaboration becomes trend in scientific publication for last decade. Many previous studies showed that collaboration had impact on quality of publication in terms of citation impact. This study aimed to investigate the influence of different pattern of collaboration on the citation impact of publications on biodiversity research from Indonesian researcher. A one thousand six hundred and ninty nine (1,699) articles were published by researchers affiliated with institution located in Indonesia from 1990-2012 based on Scopus database. Different pattern of collaboration were investigated in different level. Based on the result, only 4.4% of those publications were single author publications, 11.4% of those were intra-institution publications, and 17.4% of those were domestic collaboration. Using linear regression analysis, the result of the study showed that there was a significant positive correlation between the number of authors and the number of citations in international publication on biodiversity research from Indonesian researcher. In addition, publications with a higher number of institutions have received higher number of citations. Publication with a higher number of foreign collaborating countries also received more citations.

Abstract

Maize having maturity age less than 80 HST (days after planting) has played an important roles as part of food security system for the people of NTT since they can be harvested earlier than common maize and usually consumed by children. Local landraces of maize are usually heterogenous homozygote due to traditional farming system where the farmers used their own harvested maize for generations resulted in low level of heterogeinity. This study was aimed to assess phenotypic and genetic variability among 12 accessions of local maize on the basis of their agronomic perfomance and Inter Short Sequence Repeats profiles. Two accessions of non- early maturity maize were included as control. Ten agronomic traits and eight ISSRs ‘s primers were used to perform a phenetic analysis using unweighted pair group method with aritmethical average(UPGMA).Clustering dendrogram based on agronomic characters suggested that all accessions were forming three groups on the basis of their maturity (very early mature, early mature, and intermediate mature). On the other hand, analysis using ISSR profiles resulted on random grouping across the accesions. All accessions of early mature age having taxonomic distance of 0.83 and genetic similarity of 57%. This indicated that even though the landraces were open pollinated which allowed cross pollinations during the flowering time, phenotipic and genotipic variations observed to be considerably low.

Abstract

Best tilapia is breed fish developed by Research Center and Development of Freshwater Aquaculture (BPPBAT) Bogor that has been launched since 2008. Best tilapia is the third generation of gift tilapia. In order to obtain a better growth performance, BPPBAT continued the process of breeding, and to date we have obtained the sixth generations of Best tilapia. This study was aimed to determine growth of tilapia through observation of the relationship between the length and weight of local tilapia, F5 and F6 BEST which were maintained in brackish waters in the Pangkep area, South Sulawesi. Fish samples were taken at random, 30 fishes were taken from each population for length and weight measurement. Calculation of the length-weight of fish in the Pangkep area obtained regression coefficient (b) for local fish 2.4361; BEST F5 3.1077 and F6 3.0522. These values indicated that the local tilapia was negatively allometric while BEST was positively allometric, with local fish condition factor ranged between 0.471-1.334, F5; 0.468-1.479 and 0.498-1.534 F6 respectively. This results has indicating the normal condition of the fish. The length-weight relationship of fish had a value of determinant (R 2) ranged from 0.7829-0.9182, and indicated fish variations influenced by other variables was rather small and has suggested close relationship between length and weight.

Abstract

In order to prevent aflatoxin contamination during the production of kecap, an Indonesian soy sauce, a white-spored mutant K-IA strain induced from an aflatoxin-negative koji mold was applied to koji making process of kecap. While kecap koji making process took 9 days by conventional method without inoculum, the use of K-IA strain as a starter shortened the process to 3 days at room temperature. The koji prepared with this starter contained 2.3 x 107 cfu/g of Aspergillus sp. K-IA as the dominant speciesand some contaminants from the environment such as other species of Aspergillus (2.0 x 10 cfu/g) and Mucorales (1.4 x 10s cfu/g). The mash prepared with kecap koji inoculated with this starter contained higher formol nitrogen (FN) and water-soluble nitrogen (WN) than those prepared with koji inoculated without any starter. These results demonstrated that the use of this starter did not only contribute to the prevention of aflatoxin contamination but also improved the conventional kecap fermentation process.

Abstract

Various studies indicated that endophytic microbes lived in the plant tissues and produced antimicrobial compounds. Sugar-apple plant  (Annona squamosa L) contained alkaloids, cyanogenic glycosides, and flavonoids. The purpose of this reasearch were (1) to determine the endophytic microbes isolated from sugar-apple plant (2) to study inhibiting capabillity of endophytic isolate against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, (3) to analyze antimicrobial compounds produced by the potential endophytic isolate. Diffusion agar plate methode was used to assessed antimicrobial activity. Antimicrobial compounds were analyzed by Thin Layer Chormatography (TLC) and High Performance Liquid Chormatography (HPLC), compared with erythromycin, metronidazole and tetracycline. Twelve bacterial isolates and 24 fungus were isolated. Selected bacteria, BMC 1.1, showed the biggest clear zone on C. albicans culture on agar medium, meanwhile selected fungi, BTCK 1.1T, formed the biggest colony on S. aureus culture on agar medium. TLC and HPLC analysis showed that the Rf value of BMC 1.1 and BTCK 1.1T chloroform phase fractions was similiar to metronidazole. Metronidazole concentration in C1, C2, Ck1 and Ck2 fraction were 170.98 ppm, 18.27 ppm, 1.51 ppm and 4.14 ppm respectively.
