Abstract

A study on litterfall and their nutrient content has been conducted in the Barito Ulu research station, Central Kalimantan. Five plots of 50m x 50m were established to describe the forest structure and floristic composition. In each plot 10 of 1m x 1m litter-traps were emplaced on 25-28 April 1994, and litterfaii (ieaves, branches, flowers+fruits and miscellaneous) was collected twice at the mid and the end of month from May 1994 until May 1995. The litterfall chemical analyses were made for sampbs collected in May, June, July 1994 (dry season) and November and December 1994 and January 1995 (wet season). The mean annual total litterfall in the five plots was 8,4 t ha' yr< (range 7,3-9,5). The total litterfall was highest in October 1994 coinciding with the later part of dry season. The litterfall mineral-element concentrations and accession were below or within the range reported for other tropical forests. On the basis of Vitousek litter nutrient concentration hypothesis phosphorus tended to be more efficiently used than nitrogen. This means that growth of forest would be expected to be more limited by phosphorus. However the results of fertilization experiment in this forest suggested that primary production of forest might be more limited by nitrogen. This is a new information that primary production of lowland tropical forest was also limited by nitrogen. The results in detail of the fertilization experiment will be published separately.

Abstract

Water hyacinth {Eichhornia crassipes) in Lake Limboto was covering the area about 40 to 60% in 2008. It caused a lot of problems on water transportation, fishing activities, reducing water quantity and quality. To manage the number of water hyacinth population, biological control use omnivorous species and such as grasss carp (Ctenopharingodon idella) is a promosing alternative. In this study, effect of different stocking density of grass carp on the population of water hyacinth was observed. The result showed that 200 fish was the most effective compare to other stocking density and enabled to reducing the covering area up to 10 to 20%.

Abstract

The study was conducted in Research Institute for Animal Production (RIAP)-Ciawi. Semen was collected from 3 bulls twice a week by artificial vagina (AV), diluted in Tris buffer (control) and containing of 0.0625% formalin, reducing pH to 5.5 or their combination to temporally inhibit the motility of sperm.Diluted semen were store at ambient temperature for 0, 3 and 24 hours or at 5°C for 0, 3 and 7 days.Reactivation of motility was performed by dilution of formalin and bring the pH to 7.0. In ambient temperature, formalin and pH significantly (p<0.01) inhibit the motility of sperm, but these inhibition was reversible. The percentage of motility was significantly higher(p<0.01) in formalin than in pH 5.5 or control, following 24 hours of storage periode. The inhibition effect of combination between formalin and pH was non permanent. It is show that the inhibition effect of treatments was permanent for semen stored at 5°C.

Abstract

Isolation of entomopathogenic fungi and their extracellular enzyme activity from rhizosphere soil were carried out. Soil samples were collected from rhizosphere under Arecaceae plant collection and a shrub in Bogor Botanic Garden, West Java; and another samples were gathered from forest floor on peat land in Sebangau National Park, Central Kalimantan. Insect bait method was used to catch fungi from soil samples by using Coptotermes sp. termites and Xystrocera festiva larva in the laboratory. A total of 38 fungal isolates belonging to 18 species and 12 genera were successfully isolated and identified. Isolated fungi were dominated by Deuteromycotina; and Fusarium is the most common (5 species). Peat and Pinanga coronata rhizospheres; and termites bait gave the highest fungal diversity of 9 species respectively. All fungal isolates did not indicate chitinase activity, but 60.53 %, 10.53 % and 13.16 % had both of lipase and protease; lipase and protease activities, respectively. Only 15.79 % fungal isolates were negatively in lipase or protease activities.

Abstract

Peat forest vegetation in Bengkalis, Riau Province was studied using plot method. Two plots of 60 m x 40 m were placed at two locations which were different in peat physical condition (Plot 1: hemofibric, > 4 m deep, inundated; and Plot 2: hemosapric, 3 m deep, rarely inundated). The results showed that there were 79 species (diameter > 2 cm) included 49 species of trees (dbh > 10 cm) and 52 species of saplings (diameter 2-9,9 cm). Total number of species in plot 1 was higher (55 species; index diversity- H'=3.048) than that of plot 2 (39 species; H'=2.606), but, density and total basal area in plot 1 was lower than that of plot 2. Species similarity index in both plots was 19%.The most dominant tree species in plot 1 were Baccaurea macrocarpa, Ficus sp. and Palaquium hexandrum, whereas in plot 2 were Calophyllum soulattri, Ganua motleyana and Palaquium burckii. The influence of physical and peat soil nutrient on structure and species composition will be discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Fagraea fragrans known as tembesu is a tree species used for panel wood (MDF, medium density fiberboard), particle board, veneer and furniture. The aim of this experiment was to know successful growth origin of shoot cutting F. fragrans and to study the effect of combination treatment the origin of cutting material and media F. fragrans. The shoot cutting was done with KOFFCO system. The results showedthat the cutting material from seedling juvenile shoot provided 61.56% of shoot formation, 91.42% of survivorship and 76.33% root formed. In addition, origin material from seedling juvenile gave a significantly effect on root length and wet root weight, wet shoot weight, dry root weight and significant on dry shoot weight parameter. The increasing age of the parent tree, diminishing cuttings success. The cuttings media cocopeat (coir dust) with paddy husk gives very significant effect on root length parameter, significant on wet root weight and gave very significant effect on root dry wet. There is an interaction between the cuttings material with cutting media, for root length parameter, wet root weight and dry root weight.
