Abstract

Some Actinomycetes isolated from Waigeo Raja Ampat Regency Papua have been identified. Those isolates were also characterized for their cellulolitic and phosphate solubilizing ability. Microscopic identification was based on Miyadoh (1997) and Holt (1994) methods.Actinomycetes could be identified by microscopic observation on spores, chain spore, hypha, aerial hypha and its pigmentation.The cellulolitic ability was observed by clear zone ratio in CMC medium and phosphate solubilizing activity by the same approach in Vikoskaya medium.From 139 Waigeo's Actinomycetes isolates which had been deposited in LIPI Microbial Collection (LIPIMC) were identified as 10 genera (Actinomadura, Actinoplanes, Microbiospora, Micromonospora, Nocardia, Pseudonocardia, Saccharopolispora, Streptomices, Streptosporangium and Thermomonospora). As much as 57.5% phosphate solubilizing actinomycetes and 82.7 % cellulolitic actinomycetes were detected.

Abstract

Tanaman "lo" (Ficus racemosa L.) termasuk suku Moraceae yang berpotensi sebagai tanaman buah dan obat. Beberapa bagian tanaman lo telah dimanfaatkan penduduk, seperti buahnya dapat dimakan, daunnya berguna untuk pengobatan diare (Anonim, 1995); ekstrak kulit kayu dilaporkan dapat untuk aglutinasi sel-sel darah putih pada penderita leukimia((Rojo et al., 1999).

Abstract

B. TAPPA & S. ADISOEMARTO. 1985. Rat distribution in the Bogor Botanic Garden. Berita Biologi 3 (1) : 5 - 7. A study on rat distribution in the Bogor Botanical Garden was conducted in dry and wet season for one year period. Live-trapping was placed at habitat ten types. Three rats species were recorded during the study, i.e. Rattus tiomanicus, R.r. diardii and R. exulans. R. tiomanicus was found to be the most predominant species and its population more abundant than R.r. diardii and R. exulans. R. tiomanicus typically was captured at trap stations characterized by bamboo clumps, bananas and palms vegetation. R.r. diardii generally was trapped at stations with block housing area. Abstract

One of the interesting topic in Plant-Water Relations is the synthesis and accumulation of solutes by plant cells and within thosecells. This paper is to make a short review upon this topic. It shows the relationship of water potential components of plant cells (a - total water potential, 0n - osmotic potential and 0p-turgor pressure), in accordance with environmental fluctuations (especially water stress), osmotic regulation (osmotic adjustment) and the role of solute synthesis and accumulation in plant cells when drought develop. Proline (among sugars and organic acids), dominates most of the available reports as both an osmotic constituent/ osmotic agent and a compatible solute. Such a reviewed topic that still less available in Indonesian.

Abstract

Forest land converted into palm oil plantations have caused habitat fragmentation of elephant and land degradation. These lead to land use conflict between human and elephant. The conflict often caused the elephant killed and destructed agricultural land. The study was aimed to estimate potential use and carrying capacity of elephant habitat. Data collection of undergrowth vegetation were analyzed using twelve square plots of 1 x 1m, the distance between the plot of 50 m, tree vegetation of seedlings size 1 x 1 m, saplings 5 x 5 m, and trees 20 x 20 m, the distance between the plot of 200 m and of 1000 m lenght. Vegetation used as elephants feed were observed using purposive sampling and systematically procedure. The analysis showed that biomass of plants producing elephant fodder in Tambang Besi were of Cyperus rotundus (3600.26 kg/ha), Cynodon dactylon (346.74 kg/ha), Melaleuca leucadendron (255.21 kg/ha), and Melastoma malabatricum (156.40 kg/ha). While, the highest biomass in Tebing Penigasan plot is Cyperus rotundus (3575 kg/ha), and in Barak Gajah Plot is Isachne globusa (4013.33 kg/ha). The carrying capacity of elephants habitat of Tambang Besi, Tebing Penigasan, and Barak Gajah plots are 0.78, 0.29, and 0.41 individual/ha/day, respectively.

Abstract

During three weeks field work survey (16th June-7 July 1999) on seven habitat types in Gunung Supiori Nature Reserve, Biak-Numfor District, Papua 21 species of reptiles (six species of geckos, nine species of skinks, one species of monitor lizard and five species of snakes) and two species of amphibians were found.On all of identified species, no one is endemic species in Supiori Island, although the island has drifted for 200 million years ago.The phenomena has been occurring in this area is tend to be Brown Phenomena (Brown, 1997).Based on information from local people, two species of sea turtles (Chelonia mydas and Eretmochelys imbricata) occur barely in surrounding waters and population status of Crocodylus porosus the species that inhabitant in mangrove has already been extinct since 1980-year era.Population status of reptiles that listed in Appendix II CITES, such as Candoia aspera and some species of reptiles and frogs that listed as non-appendix CITES are almost still in good condition; the good population status is also occur on protected monitor lizard Varanus indicus.

Abstract

Javan langur is protected spesies of primates that highly threatened. Habitat degradation as a major threat causes javan langur Trachypithecus auratus (E. Geoffroy 1812) populations living in isolated habitat fragments. The research was carried out to determine the daily movement of javan langur in TWAGP as form of adaptation in isolated habitat fragments. The study was conducted in May-June 2012 by using focal animal sampling method. Vegetation analysis was performed with a point centered quarter method. The results showed that there were three major land cover types used by the Javan langur, i.e. forest, transitional forest-cultivation and cultivation. The dominant activity occurred in transisional forest-cultivation habitat (48.19%). The highest proportion of activity wass resting (33.65%) followed by feeding (30.68%), moving (27.08%) and social activities (8.60%). Based on the variations of vegetation strata, the dominant activity performed at stratum C(4-20 meters) accounted for 80.07%.

Abstract

Gewang or Corypha utan Lamk. is tree that support the daily need in Usapisonba'i village, Nekamese District, Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur The nutrient content of the tree is important to be observed, since the tree is crucial to be sustainable.Three permanent plots were established and random sampling was conducted. The results showed that characteristics of soil are clay in texture, somewhat alkaline, mid in C/N ratio, and high CEC (cation exchange capacity) for calcium, magnesium dan potassium.Nutrient contents of soil were 0.15, 0.002, 0.04, 1.16 and 0.04%, respectively, for N, P, K, Ca and Mg. Litter contribution was dominated by leaves (7.73 t ha-'), and other parts reached 6.7 t ha , with their nutrient content of N (0.72), P (0.09), K (0.18),Ca (2.S4) and Mg (0.27%). The significant, differences of nitrogen between nutrient contents and between total nutrient contents through litters (P < 0.05) were found. The nutrient contents of tree are 0.57 N, 0.4, P, 0.75 K, 0.77 Ca and 0.18% Mg. The increase of the tree nutrient could be done by utilizing organic matter or by planting tree species that can increase soil fertility and survive in savanna.

Abstract

Distribution and ecology of mlinjo (Gnetum gnemon L.)in Krakatau.Berita Biologi 3 (5): 219-224.A study on distribution and ecology of mlinjo in Krakatau was conducted during two months.Two plots were placed at different sites on the mlinjo population. According to the reconnaissance throughout the area, indicated that mlinjo has grown well in the lower area under 50 m above sea level.All the seed lings of mlinjo within 400 sq.m around the adult tree were mapped showing that the distribution was clumped and that are fewer seedlings within further way than under a flowering/fruiting adult.There was no male individu of mlinjo recorded in the Krakatau Islands.
