Abstract

Study in attempt to substitute commercial imported strychnine for elimination wild dogs in rabies disease program with Kimalakian (Croton tiglium) seeds has been conducted. This research was aimed to examine the destructive effect of croton seed petroleum extract (oil) in mice. There were 50 mice divided into 5 treatment groups. Each group was given (orally) 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.40 and 0.80 ml oil/mice respectively and 1 group (10 mice) was blank. After the animal died necropsy was performed and gross pathological and hystopathological features were observed. The results showed that LD!0: 1.66 ml of oil/kg b.w. on mice. Furthermore, it was applied to dogs (b.w. 3kg) with dose: 2.5 ml, 5.0 ml and 10 ml oil/dog respectively. All dogs became hyperactive within few minutes, then dead after dosing 5.0 and 10.0 ml oil. Gross lesion in mices and dogs showed general congestion and hemorrhage in the lung, heart and liver. Histopathologically, the gastric mucosa was atropic resulted from gastric malfunction as leading to death.

Abstract

Directional-individual selection on tilapia growth had been conducted in West Nusa Tenggara Province. The base population had been constructed through di allele crossing between six tilapia strains i.e. NIRWANA, BEST, SULTANA, Citralada, JATIMBULAN and White Sleman. A total of 150 brood stock pairs were used for spawning with the ratio of female and male parent 1: 1 in net with size of 1x1x1 m. Two hundred larvae  produced from each spawn pairs were communally reared in a pond for three months. Directional-individual selection was conducted at the size of > 50 grams. The cut-off for minimum selected fish was based on the lowest individual weight of 10% top population. The average value of heritability on body weight was 0.251 for males and 0.258 for the female population. The total value of genetic gain of body weight for four generations was 51.68% for male population and 56.78% for the female population.

Abstract

Antipyretic effect of alcohol extract ofilalang flmperata cylindrica L) root on white rat males had been studied using fever tolerance method.Experimental animals were induced to fever by injecting 0.9 ml/kg BW vaccine kotipa orally.Alcohol extract 5, 10, 30, 50,100 and 150 mg/kg BW was given one hour after injection. The body temperature was measured before injection and every half an hour until the fifth hour after injection.Paracetamol 200 mg/kg BW was used as control.Data were analyzed using ANOVA with the body temperature (T), the time interval (P) and extract doses being given (C) as parameters. The results showed that body temperature increased TC from the basal temperature at the third hour after injection of vaccine. The body temperature did not change significantly at the lower extract doses(5-30 mg/kg BW)(P>0.05),while higher doses (30-150mg/kg BW) linearly lowered the body temperature significantly (P<0.05).The extract dose at 50 mg/kg BW lowered the body temperature similar to paracetamol 200 mg/kg BW.

Abstract

Elephant yam {Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Dennst.) Nicolson} can be developed as food for diversification in Indonesia. The main obstacle is in propagation, due to long period dormancy of tuber and slow life cycle. Study on propagation of elephant yam was conducted in of Bogor Botanical Garden nursery. The aims of this study are to propagate elephant yam using tuber and rachis cutting manipulated with Plant Growth Regulators (PGR) respectively to break dormancy and to obtain an effective and efficient propagation method. PGR used in tuber cutting (small adjacent tuber and sliced-bulb) is GA3 10 ppm, GA3 20 ppm, IBA 10 ppm, IBA 20 ppm, BAP 10 ppm, BAP 20 ppm and control with or without burned husk, meanwhile PGR used in rachis cutting (R1, R2 and R3) is BAP 1 ppm, NAA 1ppm, and Rootone-F 1600 ppm. Propagation with tuber showed that IBA, GA3, control, and BAP gave similar result in developing bud numbers. Propagation with small adjacent tuber gave better result in sprouting number. Propagation with small adjacent tuber and manipulated with GA3 resulted highest sprouting number. Rootone-F 1600 ppm caused death, meanwhile BAP, NAA, and their combination (BAP-NAA) had no influence on rachis cutting growth. Lower doses Rootone-F, BAP, NAA, and BAP-NAA higher doses, rachis cuttings from juveniles are recommended.

Abstract

Aeromonas hydrophila is a pathogen that often causes considerable losses in the area of freshwater fish fanning. Vaccination is one way to simulate parent catfish make specific immunity. Specific immunity generated by the parent will be forwarded through the oocytes produced during a certain time span. The aim of this research was to know the effect and the effectivity of using hydrovac vaccine with and without the complete adjuvant. This research was done on Patin fish Pangasionodon hypophthalmus whose givng Hydrovac 0.4 ml/kg of body weight. The comparation between complete adjuvant and vaccine was 1:1. Injection was done by intra peritoneal for three mothers each with and without complete adjuvant. Injection was done at gonad maturity level II. The result showed that antibody were positively detected on mother serum which used adjuvant or not. On larva stage, antibody was detected until four weeks old. While on 2 weeks old of larva, the concentration of titer antibody was very high and raised the dilution of 1: 2048. Survival rate of juvenile which their mother got a vaccine raised 93%, was better than 73%-63% using mother without vaccine. Booster immersion of hydrovac vaccine could give preferably at the end of three weeks old or in the beginning of fourth weeks old of larva.

Abstract

Water is the main parameter to determine whether the yield potential of a plant is obtained or not. Water deficit on the tissue causes the disruption of all chemical process in the plant metabolism resulted in the plant growth impediment. In order to acquire the drought tolerance variety, various efforts have been conducted. Among others, in addition to the selection and characterization of the available germ plasma along with its cross-breeding, the development of the drought tolerance plant is conducted through somaclonal varitype induction. In the cultivation of the drought tolerance plant, beside physiological mechanism and biochemistry related to the plant tolerant to drought, the procedure of the selective and optimal selection should be managed.Hence, the mastery of the optimum selection techniques, in a relatively short time, the new drought tolerance lines could be obtained.

Abstract

Arrowroot (Maranta arundinaceae) tuber has traditionally been used by Indonesian people as a source of carbohydrate in their food diet. It will be likely more preservable and flexible when the tuber is processed into flour as an alternative raw food material. Arrowroot flour should be mixed with other material that have high amylose content for making noodles, thus the noodles have good quality almost same as commercial product. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of arenga starch substitution on the arrowroot flour noodle qualities including appearance, cooking, textural and sensory properties. Noodle was made with five variation of arrowroot flour and arenga starch composition i.e. 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, 100:0. Characterization of noodle qualities and hedonic test of noodle were analyzed. The results show that arrowroot flour substitution affects noodle qualities such as color, brittleness, cooking time, cooking loss, swelling index, expantion ratio, tensile strength, elongation and stickiness. Noodles that have characteristic nearest to commercial products and the most favored product by panelists was the mixture of arrowroot flour 25: arenga starch 75.
