Abstract

Pandanaceae is one of the three large and important families within the Monocotyledoneaie consisting of approximately 900 species found only in the Old World Tropics. Malesia is the region of importance for the fanmyfwhere the prominent diversity and the three principal genera (Freycinetia, Pandanus, and Sararanga) are found.Pandanaceae is also an important family of the Monocotyledoneae in the Malayo-Austronesian and^elanesian cultures. The usage of pannans in the Melanesian culture is more diverse and incorporating more number of species. Although pandan was first described by the two distinguish Dutch naturalists, Rumphius and Rheede tot Drakenstein, the introduction of pandan into the world of Botany was started and in the early stage also involved Swedish botanists, from Linnaeus to Fagerlind. Linnaeus still suggested Pandanus as a possibly member of Bromelliaceae. Linnaeus Jr. placed it as a genus of its own, Pandanus, thus laid the firm foundation for the classification of the genus and the entire family. The information on Pandanaceae encompassing morphology to history is described in this paper, including the significance of the family in relation with the Agenda 21.

Abstract

A research has been conducted to optimize the rate of aeration and initial cell aggregates weight in the production of ajmalicine in Catharanthus roseus cell culture in bioreactor. Catharanthus roseus culture were grown in Zenk medium with the addition of 2.5 x 10"6 M NAA ('naphthalene acetic acid') and 10s M BAP ('benzyl amino purine'). Cell aggregates were subcultured two times before transferring 20 and 30 g/fw of cell aggregates into bioreactor, respectively, and aerated with the rate of 0.2460 L/min and 0,3405 L/min, respectively. The pattern of ajmalicine production in bioreactor were observed every 3 days for 24 days.Qualitative and quantitative analysis were conducted using HPLC connected to Cromatopac CL-7APlus. The results showed that the cell aggregates and medium contain ajmalicine. The highest concentration was obtained in combination of 30 g/fw and 0.3405 L/min aeration compare to 20 g/fw - 0,246 L/min, 20 g/fw- 0,3405 L/min, as well as 30 g/fw - 0,2460 L/min. The highest ajmalicine content in cell aggregates was obtained on the 12"d days (79.23ug/g) whilst in medium was obtained in the 18th days (981.15 ug/L).

Abstract

A) 0, B) 75, C) 150, D) 225, E) 300 and F) 375 mg/kg pakan (kontrol).

Abstract

An exploration of selenium containing herbs was carried out in the Kerinci -Sumatera, Toraja highland-Sulawesi and Rinjani-Lombok. The herbs were sampled according to their morfofisiological characters and local etnopharmalogical information. The analitical parameters were the selenium and selenomethionine content as measured by AAS and GC respectively, gluthathione peroxidase as measured biochemically dan cell model shrinkage observation to reveal the selenium containing extract effect on celluler development. The result indicates the diversity of both content and functional selenium compounds in the selected herbs. The relatively high selenium content herbs such as A Ilium sativuin 1NHR had hingher gluthathione peroxidase and hence its antioxidant activity. However the relatively lower selenium content of Physalis angulata 33NHR was able to induce more cell model shrinkage. The phenomenon of relation among selenium based selenoamino acid, antioxidant and cell shrinkage potential need to be futher studied on these selected herbs.

Abstract

SULASTRI, I. RACHMATIKA & D.I. HARTOTO. 1985. Feeding and reproductive patterns of Torspp. as a base for its aquaculture. Berita Biologi 3(3): 84 -90. A study on the feeding and reproductive characteristics of Tor spp. as a base for aquaculture was done in laboratory and field conditions. Qualitative observation on the feeding habits of Tor douronensis (C.V.) do not show a restriction of the main diet to autochthonous sources. Algae were the main diet, followed by detritus, insects, diatoms, plant material, mosquitoes larvae and desmids. Laboratory observations show that T. douronensis eat first the food that is most concentrated, followed by the food that floats on the surface and last, foods on the bottom. Spearman Rank Correlation reveals that there was food overlaps between groups of fishes of different maturity stages from species collected in the field. It was found that there was a morphological change of male T. soro and a decrease of condition factors that were correlated with the increase of maturity stage. Vision as a significant factor affecting feeding and reproduction of Tor spp. and its relation to aquaculture application was discussed.
