Abstract

Background: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a common condition frequently reported in individuals aged 20–40 years (early adulthood). Approximately 33% of the population experiences at least one symptom of TMD, and about 3.6%–7% have TMD of sufficient severity to require treatment. This indicates a high prevalence of TMD in this age group in Indonesia. One approach to improving diagnostic accuracy is the use of the 5 Major TMD Symptoms (5Ts) questionnaire. However, the 5Ts questionnaire is not currently available in Indonesian, necessitating its translation and cultural adaptation. Distribution of the questionnaire can be facilitated through information and communication technology, which is referred to in healthcare as telemedicine. Purpose: To evaluate the validity and reliability of the digital Indonesian version of the 5Ts questionnaire. Methods: This descriptive analytical study employed a cross-sectional design. Validity was assessed using the corrected item–total correlation test, and reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha. The questionnaire was administered to 330 students at Universitas Sumatera Utara selected through purposive sampling according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Validity testing yielded calculated r-values ranging from 0.392 to 0.533, all of which exceeded the critical r-value of 0.107, indicating that all questionnaire items were valid. The reliability analysis produced a Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.711, exceeding the acceptable threshold of 0.70 and confirming the questionnaire’s reliability. Conclusion: The digital-based Indonesian version of the 5Ts questionnaire is a valid and reliable instrument.

Abstract

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science that employs algorithms to simulate smart decisions made by humans. It has made significant advances in the dental field in recent years. Although several systematic reviews on the use of AI in dentistry have been conducted, no comprehensive analysis of the current state of AI development and performance in dental applications has been published. Purpose: This umbrella systematic review aims to explore the expanding role of AI systems in dentistry, focusing on their applications in diagnostics, clinical decision-making, and prognosis. These core domains are essential to dental care delivery, as they directly impact treatment accuracy, planning, and outcomes. By synthesizing current evidence, this review seeks to identify advances, reveal research gaps, and support the integration of AI into routine dental practice. Methods: This study was conducted pursuant to the PRISMA guidelines. A search for full-length articles used the terms “Artificial Intelligence,” “Dentistry,” “Application,” “Systematic,” and “Review.” Results: This systematic review included articles discussing dental and maxillofacial radiology, deep learning models, endodontics, periodontics, forensic odontology, dental implants, dental caries detection, cancer detection, conservative dentistry, prosthodontics, and high-quality patient care. AI models can be considered an assistant in diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis across these various dental fields. Conclusion: AI models have demonstrated potential abilities for diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic evaluations in dentistry. For their safe integration into routine clinical practice, it is critical to improve these models in terms of explainability, interpretability, and generalizability through external validation. Applying these models in clinical procedures entails the need to establish appropriate regulatory frameworks.

Abstract

Background: Microstomia, defined as an abnormally small mouth opening, severely hinders essential daily functions such as eating, speaking, and maintaining oral hygiene. This condition can result from various causes, including surgical procedures, congenital defects, injuries, and connective tissue disorders such as oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF). Oral submucous fibrosis is a chronic, progressive disease characterized by fibroelastic changes and epithelial atrophy, leading to oral stiffness and restricted mouth opening. It is often associated with chewing tobacco, spicy foods, and nutritional deficiencies. Purpose: The primary objective was to enhance oral function and overall patient well-being in a completely edentulous patient with microstomia by addressing the physical limitations associated with denture use. This was achieved by providing innovative collapsible complete dentures designed in foldable sections for easier insertion and removal. Case: A 47-year-old woman diagnosed with OSMF and presenting with significantly limited mouth opening was successfully treated. Case Management: Innovative collapsible dentures were fabricated using a permanent silicone soft liner (MOLLOPLAST-B; Detax, Germany). This approach provided a comfortable and functional prosthetic solution that addressed the challenges associated with restricted mouth opening and altered oral tissues. The resilient nature of the permanent silicone soft liner acts as a shock absorber and conforms to the oral tissues, minimizing pressure points and facilitating prosthetic adaptation. Conclusion: This case report highlights the potential benefits of utilizing permanent soft liners in the management of microstomia associated with OSMF. This technique may represent a promising advancement in prosthetic dentistry for individuals with similar complex oral limitations.
