Abstract

The poor quality crop residues constitute the bulk of dry matter consumed by the ruminants. Like in most developing countries, including in Indonesia, feed shortage is the main constraint to their productivity. During the hot and dry seasons, the available feed resources are not enough in energy and digestion proteins, which are insufficient to maintenance requirements and reducing productivity throughout the year. The use of conventional feedstuffs such as rice brand, pollard, soybean cake, and groundnut cake to enhance production has become inappropriate. These supplements are in short supply owing to increasing demand from agricultural and industrial users. Their exorbitant prices and erratic supply made them too expensive for small-scale farmers to incorporate them into ruminant feeding. Urea Molasses Multinutrient Block (UMMB) is a convenient and inexpensive method of providing a range of nutrients to ruminants. Giving UMMB can improve low-quality feed digestion so in general can improve the performance of livestock such as milk production, weight, BCS and reproductive status. This article aims to evaluation the benefits of a UMMB for feed ruminants.

Abstract

This research’s purpose was to compare the level of wound recovery between sewn rabbit skin with absorbable thread (monofilamen) and nonabsorbable (multifilamen) then observed macroscopicly. This research used 16 male rabbit in 2 – 3 kg. Before surgery begins, the rabbits wtRe.anesthisad with ketamine-xylazine and then surgical action follows after that by making incision wound at left and right back with 3 cm long and the depth up to subcutan line. Right back is sewn by absorbable thread (catgut 3.0) and left back is sewn by nonabsorbable (silk 3.0). From the results of the study the using of absorbable threads (catgut) and nonabsorbable (silk) of the four parameters observation can be summarized that the: scab marks show better results on the use of catgut threads indicating that the process of wound healing is faster.

Abstract

Decomposition stage of carrion will attract various species of insects to come. Some species of insect will attract on carrion in the early stage of decomposition, but some of them in the late stage of death. The purpose of this research were to observe and analyze the distinctive features of insect succession on carrion that could predict the time of death. Two carrions were placed in indoor and outdoor. Insect collection and observation was done three times a day i.e, morning, afternoon and evening. Adult flying insects were collected by sweeping net, whereareas immature insect with manual. The result showed that decomposition of the carrion indoor were faster than the corrion outdoor. In outdoor there were found orders of Diptera (i.e Muscidae, Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae,Tachinidae), Coleoptera (Chrysomelidae, Staphylinidae, Scarabeidae, Silphidae), Hymenoptera (Formicidae), Hemiptera, Blataria and Orthoptera (Grillidae). However, in indoors there were found the order of Diptera (Muscidae, Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Tachinidae), Coleoptera (Chrysomelidae, Staphylinidae, Scarabeidae, Silphidae), Hymenoptera (Formicidae), Hemiptera, Aranea, and Lepidoptera. Decomposition stage of carrion indoor faster than outdoor. In the early stage to the decay stage, insects that came on carrion outdoor and indoor were Diptera (Calliphoridae, Tachinidae, Muscidae, and Sarcophagidae. On the post decay and skeletonization stage the insect that come were Coleoptera (Staphylinidae, Chrysomelidae, Scarabeidae, and Silphidae ). Hymenoptera (Formicidae) came from early stage to skeletal stage.

Abstract

An immunomodulator is a natural body defence mechanism due to the stimulation of objects/ environments, both specific and non-specific by means of cellular and humoraldefence. The objective of the study was to prove the immunomodulation ability of broiler chickens up to age 35 days that dietary fed various wheat pollard based rations. The design used in the study was a complete randomized design with six treatments and three replications. The treatment of broiler rats consisted of BR-IAJ (T0), control feed with wheat pollard base (T1), control feed with wheat pollard base plus probiotic (T2), wheat pollard based feed steamed (T3), fermented wheat pollard based feed 40% (T4 ) and fermented wheat pollard based feed 60% (T5). The rations used contained 20,5-22,5% protein with 2900-3100 Kcal metabolic energy. Lohman MB 202 Platinum from PT. Japfa Comfeed used in research with average day old chick (DOC) weight of 36,39 + 2,45 g. Parameters observed included body weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), relative weights of liver organ, thymus, lymph and bursa fabricius. The results showed that wheat pollard-based rations had a significant effect (p <0,05) on the relative weight of liver organ, body weight, FCR and ration consumption, but did not affect the relative weights of spleen organ, thymus and bursa fabricius. The mean relative weight of consecutive liver as follows: 2,47 g (T0), 2,83 g (T1), 3,40 g (T2), 2,99 g (T3), 3,15 g (T4) and 3,06 g (T5). The average body weight, consumption and FCR rations were as follows: 1415,24 g; 136,45 g/day; 2,03 (T0), 775,04 g; 125,19 g/day; 3,40 (T1), 813,17 g; 129,86 g / day; 3,36 (T2), 792,89 g; 128,14 g /day; 3,54 (T3), 892,91 g; 138,33 g /day; 3,27 (T4), 969,56 g; 155,52 g/day; 3,37 (T5). The conclusion of the study was that the ration with the addition of wheat pollard 60% was able to provide an increase in body weight gain and the best immunomodulation seen from the aspect of the proportion of immunomodulating organs to the growth of broiler chickens.

Abstract

General anaesthesia has a high risk during surgery, regional anaesthesia with nerve block is expected to minimize the use of general anaesthesia while increase the analgesic effect and muscle relaxation effect. This study aimed to compare the analgesic effects of sciatic nerve block on the hind limb and the effect of lidocaine 2%, and a combination of 2% lidocaine with 2% xylazine on sheep cardiopulmonary function. Sciatic nerve block was guided with ultrasonography and nerve stimulator. In this research, sheep were sedated with diazepam (0.5 mg / kg). Sheep was divided into three groups; first injected with saline solution (SS), second with lidocaine 2% 5 mg / kg (Lid) and third with lidocaine 2% 5 mg / kg and xylazine 2% 0.1 mg / kg (LidXyl). The results of this research showed that the LidXyl group had the highest analgesic effect and broader blockade area, namely femoris, cruris, and metatarsus-digit. The LidXyl blockade value was highest in the digitmetatarsus region, while the Lid group shows the highest blockade value in the cruris region. The LidXyl group with the addition of xylazine results in a decrease in heart rate and respiration rate. Xylazine increased and extended analgesic effect compared to lidocaine but resulted in a decrease in heart rate and respiration rate in the early minutes of anaesthesia, it is however safe to be used in sheep.

Abstract

Javan slow loris (Nycticebus javanicus) one of the species of the genus Nycticebus is endemic in Java. Their distribution region is in West Java and Banten, and also reported to be found in Central Java and East Java, although very rarely. Status of the species is Critically Endangered due to high levels of poaching, habitat loss and habitat fragmentation, so that the necessary conservation in order to increase the population. For conservation management it is necessary to know the status of genetic resources that play of role in breeding, then this research is to explore the genetic population of the Javan slow loris from some locations in West Java. The research objective was to assess the diversity of their current population of Java loris through the control region (D-loop) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). A total of 23 individuals samples from Gunung Halimun Park, Tasikmalaya, Garut, Ciamis, Jember and confiscated at the Rehabilitation Center IAR Bogor were used in this stydy. Specific primers of D-loop are used for loris with a length of 296 bp sequence. The result showed there are only five different sites and formed six haplotypes, each haplotypes only 1-3 nucleotides different. Low genetic diversity is shown as much as 42.96% of individuals show the same sequence or genetic distance (d) = 0 that indicate was monomorf population from different population. The genetic distance of the entire population was 0.003 ± 0:01 (0.3%).

Abstract

This study aims to maintain the quality of pig semen for longer during storage at 15oC, in an effort to support artificial insemination programs with the addition of Bovine Serum albumin (BSA) to diluent Beltsville Thawing Solution (BTS). This study uses a completely randomized design with five treatment groups, each To = semen was diluted with BTS without the addition of BSA ; T1 = with the addition of 5 mg BSA/mL diluent; T2 = with the addition of 10 mg BSA/mL diluent; T3 = with the addition of 15 mg BSA/mL diluent; T4 = with the addition of 20 mg BSA/mL diluent. Each treatment was repeated five times so that the number of samples used was twenty-five. The diluted cement is stored at 15oC for 72 hours then observing the quality of cement includes: progressive motility, dead spermatozoa, abnormalities, and intact plasma membranes. The data obtained were analyzed by analysis of variance, if there were differences followed by Duncan’s test. The results showed, addition of BSA concentration of 10 mg/mL and 15 mg/mL of diluent gives the same effect on the quality of cement during storage and significantly better (p <0.05) when compared to the addition of 0 mg/mL, 5 mg/mL and 20 mg/mL diluents. It can be concluded, the addition of BSA 10 mg/mL BTS diluents can maintain the most optimal quality of pig semen against progressive motility, dead spermatozoa, abnormalities and intact plasma membranes.
