Abstract

Forest fire in 1994 has destroyed some areas in Pohen’s hill Batukahu nature reserve. Ecological restoration is needed to be initiated. To gain information on vegetation condition needed to design a suitable restoration model a field survey was conducted. Result showed that secondary succession is progressing in this area. Pioneer species such as Eupatorium, Melastoma and Homalathus were found here. Local species (Dacrycarpus imbricatus) that has an important value was also found escaped from the severe forest fire. An integrated restoration concept is proposed to help initiating the ecosystem rehabilitation.

Abstract

This experiment was performed to examine the effects of Andrographis paniculata Nees leaves extract on foetus morphology if given during organogenesis period. Thirty pregnant mice were randomly divided into 5 groups for teratogenic effects. Extract was given orally by gavage with 0 (as control); 0,004 (equal to one time dose to human); 7,5; 15; and 22,5 g/g body weight/ day. Treatment was given from day 6 to day 13 of gestation (organogenesis period). Foetus were removed on day 18 of gestation by caesarean section. Quantitative data were analyzed with Anova and Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that teratogenic effects increased in dose-related manner by causing foetus death and resorption, hemorrhage and clubfoot.

Abstract

The effect of temperature and length of storage on vitamin C concentration of chili (Capsicum frustescens) was observed on this study. Samples were taken from farmer’s field around Gianyar Regency of Bali. The chilies were treated with temperature such as 10ºC, 20ºC, and 29ºC (room temperature) and stored for 5, 10, and 15 days. Jacobs method was applied for vitamin C determination. The highest vitamin C content was obtain from control (59,9 mg/100 ml). On the other hand, the lowest was from chili that stored at room temperature for 15 days (23,6 mg/100 ml). For weight loss, the highest of loss was from chili which stored at room temperature for 15 days.

Abstract

Experiment to determine the spermatozoa viability of Petaurus berviceps papuanus T. has been performed. Observation was done under microscope and trypan blue was used as stain. Viable spermatozoa were counted from a total of 100 spermatozoa. It was found that 4,75 % of the spermazoa could be maintained for 7.5 hours in the DMEM (Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium) at 35oC.

Abstract

This study was conducted to observe the effect of cigarette smoke exposure on spermatogenesis of male mice. The animals used in this study were 63 male mice, aged 12 weeks. They were divided randomly into 3 groups, each group consisted of 21 mice. One group was used as control, two groups were used as treatment (KO = control, KM = mice group exposed by a light cigarette smoke, KJS = male exposed by a kretek cigarette smoke). The animals in each treatment were exposed by 21 cigarette smoke once daily for forty days. After 40 days of treatment, analysis on plasma level of nicotine was conducted and the testicles were sectioned and stained for qualitative and quantitative microscopic analysis. The results showed that plasma level of nicotine on the KJS group outweighed significantly (P< 0,05) the KM group. It was also found that the number of pachytent spermatocyt and spermatids for both KM and KJS cigarette smoke exposure reduced significantly (P < 0.05)

Abstract

A study of Potamididae snail from the mangrove ecosystem in Ujung Kulon National Park was conducted, regarding to its diversity, shell characters and habitat characters. This study was carried out in 2008 during drought and rainy season. At the eight stations observed, seven species and four genera of Potamididae snail were identified. Compared with previous study, this study added new information from obtaining one genus (Cerithidea) of three species (Cerithidea weyersi, C. quadrata and Cerithideopsilla alata)
