Abstract

The study, in 2012, has successfully formulated with the MCDM for each allocation of  space in KKPD allotment (core areas, sustainable fisheries zone, used zone, and other zones). This weighting techniques need to be tested and  be implemented in identifying and designing the KKPD in the study area. This study aims to identify and map the biophysical conditions and the potential of coastal and marine natural resources in marine conservation area candidate, North Luwu Regency; to identify the areas suitable for the KKPD based on weighting technique with the MCDM method; and to evaluate potential candidates for marine protected areas in the coastal region. This study used a survey method to perform in  situ measurements of physico-chemical parameters, conducted a survey of coastal ecosystems using the transect method. The socio-economic data of coastal communities were collected using the questionnaire. The biophysical conditions and marine resources were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The results showed that the candidate region has a rich diversity  of coastal ecosystems, but the ecosystem, particularly seagrass beds and coral reefs have been in damaged category. Only the mangrove ecosystem that was still in a good condition category with moderate-to-heavy levels of density. There were 6 species of seagrasses and 6 species of mangroves and 71 species of reef fish. It was discovered 2 regions  corresponding to the allotment of the Core Zone, which is in the Region I and III with the total area of 654.22 hectares. For sustainable fisheries zone, Region  II and IV would be the first choice with the total area of 620.27 hectares. The Used Zone was identified in the Region V with total area of 480.66 hectares. The total area of the region was equal to 1755.15 hectares. Marine protected areas of was suggested to the protection of coastal ecosystems including mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs and its associated biota, especially the protection of local feeding ground of several species (sea turtles and dugongs).

Abstract

Mackerel is one of the main targets of hand line fishing in the  Tambelan coastal  waters, Bintan Regency. The mackerel catch data were collected by following the hand line fishing operation as many as  40 trips from December 2013 to April 2014. The productivity data of hand line fishing were calculated based on the time of fishing operations (morning, noon, afternoon). The average productivity of hand line fishing in the morning, daytime and afternoon were 0.051 kg/minutes, 0.036 kg/minutes and 0.033 kg/minutes, respectively. Handline fishing productivity in the morning was not significantly different with at the daytime, however there was a significant different in productivity between in the morning and in the afternoon. Whilst,  the fishing productivity at the daytime was not significantly different with that in the afternoon.

Abstract

Moonfish (Mene maculata) known locally as bete tamako or peda cina, is one of the  economically important fish resources resulting from Buyat Bay. Although it has relatively small size (estimated length 25-30 cm), but the fish has a good taste. The presence of moonfish is usually a sign of sailfish fishing season in the Buyat Bay. Common fishing gear used to catch moonfish is hand line , noru.  However, scientific information about the status of moonfish fishery was not yet understood. Therefore, this study aims to determine the status of moonfish fishery and map out the fishing location.  This research was conducted in the Buyat Bay, Ratatotok District, Southeast Minahasa Regency (March-September 2013); using a survey method with a descriptive approach. Catch data were analyzed by a surplus production model.  These results informed that the maximum sustainable yields (MSYs)  was 1707 fish/trip/year where the number of  the suitable fishing trips was 470 trips.

Abstract

This research aims to study the cooperative roles as fisherman’s need provider (a Case study at Budi Bahari Cooperative, Barru Regency).  The major Problem that was interesting to discuss was how the cooperative roles as fisherman’s need to fulfill specifically as a capital, equipment and daily needs provider, and to affect the consumer purchase decision at Budi Bahari Cooperative. This study used a case study to assess the Budi Bahari Cooperative performance related to fishermen’s catch and daily life.  Purposive sampling method was used with respondents from Budi Bahari’s Cooperative staffs and five fisherman groups (25 people). Data were collected through direct interview for all respondents and were analyzed using chi square method. Results showed that Budi Bahari Cooperative gave sizeable role by loan capital, supply equipment and daily needs of cooperative’s members who work as a fisherman. Hence, the purchase decision was not influenced by the price, and but it was affected by product type, and goods distribution

Abstract

Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) has long been captured by commercial fishery in Makassar Strait using purse seine, trolling line and handline fisheries. It was probably it can cause over exploitation and decrease population structure for that fish. This study aimed to analyze the size structure of yellowfin tuna based on the positions of deep and shallow sea FADs (fish aggregating devices). The data consisted of fish length and weight ) and the size of gonad maturation, which were collected from the field observation . The data were analyzed using histogram graph and t- test. The results indicated that the fish length caught in the deep and shallow sea FADs ranged from 30 to120 cm with the average of 101.39 ± 2.49 cm, and from 105 to 170 cm with the average of 134.90 ± 1.90, respectively. The fish weight ranged from 20 to75 kg for deep sea FADs and ranged from 0.4 to 35 kg for shallow sea FADs. The first stage of gonad maturation on either female or male occurred at 118.88 cm forklength, where the smallest spawning size on  female  was 126.10 cm forklength.

Abstract

Large pelagic species such as tuna are known to be abundant in Mamuju Waters,  Makassar Strait.  The distribution and abundance of the fish in that area are expected to be  related to the distributions of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration. This study aims to predict spatial and temporal distribution of the species during the period of June 2013-May 2014.  Probability indices used for detection of tuna potential fishing zones (PFZs) were constructed from a model of satellite-based SST and chlorophyll data in relation to tuna fishery. Results showed that the occurrence of tuna species in Mamuju Water were mostly predicted in areas of 118°12’-118°48’ E 1°48’ – 2°30’S with the total area of approximately 7,495 km2.   The potential fishing zones were mainly found in August.  It was likely that tuna potential fishing zones associated with the preferred oceanographic factors throughout the study area.

Abstract

Biological performance of skipjack tuna has been done in the Flores Sea during the  southeast monsoon (June - August, 2013).  The objective of the research was to analyze biological performance of skipjack tuna captured by purse seine: including size composition, age classes, growth rate, food habit, gonad maturity and suitable length for capture.  The data for length structure and age class, the growth rate,  food habit, gonad maturity,  and volumetric fecundity estimation were analyzed using Bhattacharya, Von Bertalanffy, propendance index, histological and volumentric methods, respectively. The results showed that (1) the size structure and age class were different according to the fishing ground location and the fishing season, (2) the average size of fishes captured in the western part of Flores Sea was greater than the eastern one, (3) the average length of fishes catched by purse seine without fish aggregation device (FAD, rumpon) was longer than  that of with FAD, (4) the growth rate of skipjack tuna was slow where the growth coefficient was less than 0,5 per year, and the asymptotic length was 106,0 cm FL, (5) the skipjack tuna achieved the mature stage at 45 cm and  at 50 cm length for female and male, respectively, and ready to spawn at 55 cm and 60 cm for male and female , respectively, (6) it was more than 80 % of fishes captured by fishermen in the Flores Sea which were not yet suitable size for fishing.

Abstract

Fisheries management ideally could prevent the occurrence of overfishing which nowadays has occurred globally, including in Indonesia.  On the basis of fishing status and biology of skipjack tuna, as well as analysis of relationship between sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a with skipjack tuna catches,  the fisheries management should implement zoning regulation. The north zone was suggested to be prioritized as a conservation area for protecting skipjack juvenile (< 46,5 cm FL) from fishing activity.  The middle and south zones were suggested to be fishing area where sustainable fishing is applied.  The Application of these regulations has an implication on total allowable catches from Bone Bay.  The number has lower value than the previous MSY and F-opt values.  Number of skipjack tuna which was allowed to be caught in the north zone is 573 ton yr -1 , in the middle zone was 5,820 ton yr and in the south zone was 2,210 ton yr -1 .   Overall, the value of allowed number of skipjack tuna catches in Bone Bay was estimated to be 8,600 ton yr effort per year is equivalent with 5,376 operational trips from pole and line boats.   -1 with fishing-1
