Abstract

People communicate with others to complete what is called a ‘social demand’. In conversations, people tend to speak politely to kepp their interlocutors’ feelings so the conversation can be maintained in harmony. They follow several rules and principles that already exist in society. They apply politeness strategies so that the communication can run effectively. This study aims to explain the realization of positive politeness strategies on the tonight show starring Jimmy Fallon. The data were taken from the talk show transcript as the primary source. A descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze positive politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson. Based on the analysis, the positive politeness strategies were used in Jimmy Fallon talk show. The types of positive politeness strategies are are notice (attend to hearer), exaggerate, intensify, use in group identity marker, seek agreement, avoid disagreement, presuppose/assert/raise common ground, joke, assert/presuppose speaker knowledge, offer/promise, be optimistic, include both speaker and hearer in the activity, give/ask for a reason, assume/assert reciprocity, give gifts (sympathy, good, understanding). There were positive politeness strategies used in the utterances with the highest data was performed by the give gifts sub-strategy 12,95%; and the lowest data was performed by assert or presuppose speaker’s knowledge sub-strategy 1,78%. By using positive politeness strategies is expected to show the intimacy relationship among the speaker and interlocutor during the interaction and achieve communicative competence.

Abstract

This study was aimed to discover the types of processes used Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) to study the relationship between Visual, Lingual, and Written text, and how they influence the authors to analyze of Artificial Intelligence Video’ Alexandr Wang speech in TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) talks YouTube channel. Artificial intelligence is a set of sciences, theories, and techniques whose purpose is to reproduce by a machine the cognitive abilities of a human being. Machine-based systems can give a set of human-defined objectives and make predictions, recommendations, or decisions that influence real or virtual environments. AI systems interact with us and act on our environment directly or indirectly. Often, they appear to operate autonomously and can adapt their behavior by learning about the context, (UNICEF 2021: 16). AI systems are algorithmic models that carry out cognitive or perceptual functions in the world that were previously reserved for thinking, judging, and reasoning human beings. (Leslie et al. 2021: 8). MDA is a term that is used to refer to the way people communicate using different modes at the same time (Kress & van Leeuwen, 1996), which is defined as the use of several semiotic methods in product design, or semiotic events simultaneously, and in a certain way these modes combined with strengthening, compliment, or be in a certain arrangement (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2001).

Abstract

In this study, the researchers identified ways that politeness strategies are commonly employed in a speech. Specifically, this study aimed at exploring the politeness strategies used by Donald Trump and General El Sisi during their speech at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly. Both the similarities and the differences between Donald Trump’s and General Sisi's use of politeness strategies and sub-strategies in their speeches were investigated. A qualitative research approach was conducted, and the theory of politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson was applied as the analysis framework. The research data was collected from the 57 utterances in Trump's speech and 79 utterances in General Sisi's speech. The analysis results showed that both Trump and El-Sisi applied bald on record, positive, and negative politeness. Specifically, the politeness strategies found in Trump's speech were 10 utterances of bald on record, 53 utterances of positive politeness, 8 utterances of negative politeness, and two utterances of off-record strategy. On the contrary, General Sisi's speech mostly contained negative politeness strategies. It was found that there were 70 utterances of negative politeness, 11 utterances of positive politeness, and 1 utterance of off-record strategy. These various politeness strategies used by Donald Trump and General Sisi could not be separated from their respective social positions, social distances, and cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

In a talk show, conversations naturally operate by taking turns. Sometimes the participants ignore the rules and focus more on gaining significant attention from the audience than making successful conversations. The participants involved in the conversation have the power to organize the distribution of conversational turns. This research applied qualitative research, which concerns evaluating the power and status of turn-taking mechanism used by the participants in talk show. The data used all utterances produced by participants from two episodes in Insight with Desi Anwar talk show. The utterances were transcribed using Jefferson's transcript notation. In addition, the data were analyzed by using the theories, such as Stenstrom, Sacks et al., and Brown and Levinson. The study reveals three findings related to the research questions. First, the results showed that taking the turn strategy was the most often used by the participants of the two episodes in talk show, followed by holding the turn strategy and yielding the turn strategy. Second, the phenomenon of turn-taking mechanism is influenced by power and status, where status affects participants in dominating turn-taking. Third, the quality of the conversation can be seen from the fluency of conversation itself in applying the rules of turn-taking mechanism. The participants use two rules, selecting the next speaker and self-selection. Pedagogically, this study can be used to make the teachers and students consider the significance of having an understanding of turn-taking mechanism, knowing the rules and how to maintain turn-taking, and the meaning of words in the spoken interaction.

Abstract

Speaking is a God-given human ability to communicate with one another using voices and language that other humans can recognize. The education team hopes that students will be able to employ and master speaking strategies as a result of teaching and learning activities both inside and outside the classroom using the Technology SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition) Model. The study aims to determine whether there is a significant difference in student’s ability to speak English when using the SAMR Model compared to when using the Manual Model and also to learn about the experiences students have while learning to use the SAMR Model. This study conducts quasi-experimental research in order to collect significant improvement data on the use of the SAMR model to improve students' ability to speak procedure text. Taking the results of the pre-test and post-test scores on the type of presentation test and showing a high level of agreement between researchers and observers, the t-test and ANCOVA test showed a significant change in student learning outcomes, indicating that the SAMR Model follows the requested process and has an impact on student learning.

Abstract

This study compares the communication strategies employed in synchronous and asynchronous media during the learning of English. E-learning has been employed more frequently. This condition enables English subjects to be taught and learned in a setting without face-to-face interaction. E-learning is available in both synchronous and asynchronous modes. Based on the communication methods that arose in both modes, this study was done to present the emergence of communication strategies in both media. The present study involved 36 university students who were enrolled in a teaching methodology course and one lecturer. Specifically, the data were gathered through WhatsApp Group observation and Zoom interviews. The discussion of the study was presented using an explanatory format because it was a qualitative study. From the study, there were 3 types of communication strategies found in synchronous (Zoom), namely codeswitching (87%), time-gaining (13%), and foreignizing (0,3%). While in asynchronous mode using WhatsApp Group, codeswitching (12,5%) and literal translation (87,5%) were found. and synchronous media (Zoom). It was found that the students’ engagement in the WhatsApp group was higher (82%) than was found in Zoom (18%). However, the attitude and awareness of the students also played a significant role in the development of the communication strategies. This study contributes to the research on communication strategies found not only in oral form but also in written form and can be a consideration to promote the teaching of communication strategies.

Abstract

One of the steps in creating a course that delivers validity and relevance for all course design activities is analyzing the needs of the students. Need analysis helps teachers to identify students’ needs in learning English based on their daily needs and future needs. This study intends to evaluate the English textbook appropriateness for students and the school’s needs in ESP in the office administration program at SMK Setiabudhi Semarang. Hutchison and Waters (1987) proposed the theory that was employed in this research. The theory elaborates on the concept of need analysis in ESP that should contribute to the target and learning needs. Target needs are linked to what the students need to accomplish in the target situation, while learning needs refer to what the students need to do to learn effectively. This study applied a descriptive qualitative research approach to analyze the information gained via student surveys, teacher interviews, and document observations. The study's findings demonstrate that the English textbook used was deemed appropriate for meeting both the students and the school’s needs. The degree of appropriateness revealed that, on average, the textbook satisfied 77% of school needs and 87% of student needs. The result is expected to give a contribution to both teachers and students to evaluate their English materials in the textbook used in learning ESP.
