Abstract

This undergraduate thesis is entitled Verbal and Non-Verbal Signs on Webtoon Seasons of Blossom. This undergraduate thesis mainly focuses on analysing verbal and non-verbal signs on webtoon Seasons of Blossom. It was aimed to identify the signifier and signified of verbal and non-verbal signs, and explain the relationship between the verbal and non-verbal signs to determine a meaningful event on webtoon Seasons of Blossom. The theory by Saussure is used to analyze the signifiers and signified of the verbal and non-verbal signs as the first problem. The theory by McCloud is used to analyze the second problem about relationship between words and pictures. Qualitative method are used in this undergraduate thesis. The source of data is the 28th episode with the sub-title Bomi’s Flower (28) by using documentation method. The data were presented in the form of pictures and table. The result of analysis shows that the signifiers and the signified are found in the verbal and non-verbal signs on webtoon Seasons of Blossom. The verbal and non-verbal signs are work well to support each other in delivering the idea. The relationship between verbal and non-verbal signs are also determine a meaningful event in the analysis. Abstract

This study entitled Compound Words Found in Tati’s Video “JLo’s Makeup Artist Does My Makeup”. This study aimed to identify and classify the types of compound words found in Tati’s video “JLo’s Makeup Artist Does My Makeup” and to analyze the meaning of the compound words conveyed in Tati’s video “JLo’s Makeup Artist Does My Makeup”. The data was taken from Tati’s videos on YouTube titled “JLo’s Makeup Artist Does My Makeup”. The method used in data collection was documentation with note-taking techniques. The qualitative method was used in analyzing the data that had been collected. The data analysis was presented using formal and informal methods. The results of this study showed that 45 compound words were found in all the conversations in Tati’s video “JLo’s Makeup Artist Does My Makeup”. Based on the two problems of the study, there were three types of compound words; 28 compound nouns, five compound adjectives, and 12 compound verbs. In analyzing the meaning of the compound words, it had been found two types; 17 transparent meanings and 28 opaque meanings. Keywords: compound words, meaning, video

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui makna yang terkandung dari terjemahan Al-Quran bebas bersajak berbahasa Aceh dalam Surat Al-Fatihah. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data yang bersumber dari penelitian ini dianalisis menggunakan metode introspeksi karena peneliti merupakan penutur asli bahasa Aceh. Metode introspeksi merupakan suatu cara memperoleh data dengan menggunakan intuisi bahasa seseorang yang mempelajari bahasa aslinya, untuk menyediakan data yang diperlukan dalam analisis sesuai dengan tujuan penelitian. Hasil yang diperoleh dalam penelitian ini adalah Surat Al-Fatihah merupakan bab pembuka yang memiliki arti penting karena sebagai pembuka bacaan seluruh ayat Al-Quran. Dalam proses penerjemahan ayat-ayat tersebut, diperlukan pemahaman mendalam terhadap kompleksitas linguistik bahasa Aceh itu sendiri. Terjemahan surat Al-Fatihah ke dalam bahasa Aceh menambah dimensi budaya dan linguistik dalam pengalaman membaca Al-Quran bagi penutur bahasa Aceh. Hal ini memungkinkan para penutur untuk merasa lebih terhubung dengan teks tersebut secara mendalam. Dengan adanya terjemahan Al-Quran bebas bersajak berbahasa Aceh terintis jalan atau terbukanya kesempatan untuk memperkuat, memperluas, meningkatkan kemampuan, dan menambah perbendaharaan bahasa Aceh dengan segala sesuatu atributnya sehingga bahasa Aceh tidak hanya dituturkan melainkan menjadi khasanah kekayaan budaya lokal Indonesia. Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of double standards in hate comments against K-POP artists found on Instagram. This research utilized a descriptive qualitative approach, which refers to research methods that produce descriptive data using pragmatics approach. The data were collected from the most followed K-POP pages on Instagram in Indonesia: @fyi.korea, @officialkvibes, and @coppamagz. The objects of this study include hate comments found on these Instagram pages. Based on the results of observations on these pages, it was found that some of the data included hate comments aimed at several K-Pop idols. The results of the study indicate that the topics that receive the most hate comments are related to dating scandals, the sexy appearance of K-POP artists, and also the physical appearance and visual aspects. Based on the result, the double standards towards the involved K-POP artists are glaringly evident. It can be concluded that there are two major factors contributing to these double standards: gender and popularity. In terms of gender, female K-POP artists are more frequently criticized and receive hate comments compared to their male counterparts. Meanwhile, in terms of popularity, K-POP artists with higher popularity levels tend to receive hate comments more often than those who are not as popular. Abstract

This study aimed to identify the types of women’s language features used in Little Women Movie using the theory proposed by Lakoff (1973) and explain the reason of women characters used each women’s language features based on the theory by Holmes (2013). The data source is a movie entitled Little Women, which was released on February 7, 2020. Documentation and note-taking method were applied in order to collect the data. The descriptive qualitative method was used in analyzing the data since the data were analyzed in the form of sentences and paragraphs. The analysis of this study was presented using formal and informal methods. The results showed all women’s language features based on Lakoff (1973) found in this movie. Those are fillers and hedges, tag questions, rising intonation, empty adjectives, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, ‘superpolite’ forms, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. Meanwhile, the reasons women talk using women’s language features mentioned by Holmes (2013) were also found in the women characters, including social conscious, woman’s role as guardians of society’s values, and subordinate group. Abstract

This research discusses the using of illocutionary acts in the utterance of character in Four Lions movie. The aims of this research are to find out the types and the dominant type of illocutionary act in the Four Lions movie written by Morris, Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong. The research used the theory from Searle (1979) in analyzing the script. The researcher use qualitative method by collecting data from watching the movie, analyzing the dialogues of each characters, and taking noted. The result of this research, there were 35 illocutionary acts. The findings indicated that Four Lions movie applied five types of illocutionary acts: Assertives with 4 data (12%), directives 18 (52%), expressives 7 (20%), commissives 5 (15%), and 1 declaratives (3%). The sub-classifications of illocutionary acts are found including: assertives; stating, informing, and asserting. Directives; asking, commanding, suggesting, and inviting. Abstract

This study entitled “Slang Words in Jason Mraz’s Song Lyrics from the Album We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.” aims to identify the types of slang words and analyze the word formation process used in Jason Mraz’s song lyrics. The data used in this study was taken from all song lyrics on Jason Mraz’s album entitled “We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.”. The data was collected by using the documentation method. This study used a qualitative method to analyze the data in the form of description using words. There were two theories applied in this study which are the theory proposed by Chapman (2007) to analyze types of slang words and Yule’s theory (2010) to analyze the word formation process. The results of this study indicate there were two types of slang words found in this album, namely primary slang and secondary slang. Primary slang was the most dominant type of slang word because it is commonly used in daily conversation. From the word formation analysis, there were six processes of forming slang found in this album. They are etymology, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, and derivation. The most frequent process was blending.

Abstract

Abstract—This study aims to find the speech function category used by the characters in the movie entitled We’re the Millers and analyze the reason of the characters for using speech function category. In collecting data, this study used non-participant observation as a method and note taking as a technique. Descriptive qualitative was a method used to analyze the data. Then, the informal method was used as a method to present the results of the analysis to describe the speech function category used by the characters and the reason of the characters for using the speech function category in We’re the Millers movie. This study used the sociolinguistics theory proposed by Holmes (2013) about speech function category. The results of this study showed that the utterances that uttered by the characters in We’re the Millers movie contains all categories of speech function. Those categories were expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, poetic, and phatic. In addition, it was also found that the reasons of the characters for using the speech function categories were to express feeling, to give commands, to give information, to explain things, focuses on the aesthetic values on language, and to express empathy.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is entitled Translation Procedure of Balinese Culture Terms into English in Leak Horror Movie by Dreadteam. It aims at identifying the types of cultural terms and analyzing the translation procedure applied in the translation of Balinese cultural terms into English in Short Horror. The data were taken from short movie entitled Leak Horror Movie by Dreadteam. The data were collected from the movie by watching the movie and reading the subtitles. This study uses descriptive qualitative method. This study uses Translation Procedure by Vinay and Darbelnet and culture word by Newmark theories. The results show that there are three types of procedure which are fourteen types of borrowing, one equivalent, and two adaptation procedure are found in the short movie that classified in to cultural term there are one social culture, eight social organization and religious, five ecologies, three material cultures and two gesture and habit cultures. All the data have procedure type and their culture categorize which mean the translator tried to conveyed the meaning of the cultural term from the source language to target language. Borrowing type of translation procedure is the most frequent one found in the analysis. That is fifteen out of twenty data. Abstract

This study examines the distinctions between men and women when speaking, identifies women's language features based on Lakoff’s women’s language features theory (1975), and the dominating features employed by the character. Women speak more politely to avoid overstepping the addressees' rights. Therefore, women are well-known as more powerless than men because women also apply the terms of avoidance of swearing strong words in their statements. Thus, the researcher analyzed Encanto movie that analyzed women’s language features used by Encanto’s women characters. The researcher chose the Encanto movie because women mostly play in this movie. This movie also shows some expressions that indicate the language used by women and men in society differently. The research was qualitative, primarily descriptive research. The study uses the Encanto movie as the primary data and the movie’s script as secondary data to complement the analysis. While collecting data, the researcher watched the movie several times, read the script carefully, and noted the women's utterances in the movie. Through the analysis, the researcher did, found 2 lexical hedges (15,4%), 2 tag questions (15,4%), 2 rising intonation (15,4%), 2 intensifiers (15,4%), 2 ‘hypercorrect grammar’ (15,4%), 1 avoidance of swear strong words (7,6%), and 2 emphatic stress (15,4%). The last are ‘empty’ adjectives, ‘super’ polite forms, and precise color terms that have no case (0%). In general, the features stated by Lakoff have a balanced use in this movie.
