In response to that, the designed training model of PAI containing multiculturalism to enhance the professional competence of teachers PAI has beenempirically validated by a team of experts and practitioners and it can improve the competency of PAI teachers. The hypothetical model validation resulted from experts and practitioners through FGDs deserves to be applied to the trial I and II. The final model after FGD II is effective in a trial proven by practicality of training model that has compatibility with different types and target groups of the study. For MORA RI, it is suggested to always improve the professional competence of PAI teachers and uses the designed training model containing multiculturalism on an ongoing basis. The related stakeholders need to cooperate in developing a better research and development in creating abetter PAI training model.

Abstract

The background of this study is the importance of reading as one of the most important skills to be mastered by students. However, the reality shows that the reading skill of Indonesian students is still poor as compared to the other countries. The study also reveals that Indonesia still encounters the unavailability of reading material with appropriate multicultural content. Therefore, the study aims to produce reading materials with multicultural content. The study employed R & D approach to conduct research, develop, and test the product. The results of field tests using t-test shows that the part 1 mean score output of Paired Samples Statistics on reading before the treatment is 65.17, and after using the developed reading material is 82,85. The part 2 output of Paired Samples Correlations shows that correlation value of two variables is 0.564 and the significance value is 0.00. The significance value of 0.00 is less than 0.05. The section 3 output of Paired Samples Test shows the value of 0.00 which is less than 0.05. The Paired Samples Test 0.00 value is less than 0.05. The value suggests that reading scores before and after using the developed material is different. The conclusion of this study is that there is a very significant difference between students’ reading skill before and after using the model of reading materials with multicultural content. Therefore, the model is able to effectively improve the students’ reading skill.

Abstract

A textbook is a crucial part of English language teach since it provides a whole package of materials as well as the activities and assignments. One of the main language materials presented by the textbook is reading texts. These reading texts consist of a lot of genres, one of which is recount text. As a model text used by the teachers and students, it needs to be stylistically well-written and effectively organized. In order to achieve these features, the cohesion and coherence are essential. This study examines the realization of cohesion to achieve coherence in two English textbooks for grade VIII of junior high school students. In conducting this study, qualitative approach with discourse analysis, specifically text analysis, was adopted. Eight recount texts presented in the two textbooks are analyzed using cohesion concept by Halliday and Hasan (2014) and coherence concept by Thornbury (2005). There are three main findings of this study. First, in terms of grammatical cohesion, reference and conjunction dominated the findings; whilst lexical cohesion findings are dominated by collocation. Second, the texts are mostly organized by using the reiteration pattern. Third, the texts share more similarities than differences in regard with the result of the cohesion and coherence analysis. At last, the similarities and differences provide two effects to the text; indicating the texture of the text and representing the text quality. Keywords: textbook, recount text, cohesion, coherence.

Abstract

Textbooks play an important role in teaching and learning activities. The revisions to the curriculum still kept character education at their center, even strengthening its implementation. Indonesia's current president, Mr. Jokowi, has a plan called "mental revolution," which is contained in the 2013 curriculum. This research aims at revealing several social character values that are representing a mental revolution: (1) honesty, (2) discipline, (3) responsibility, (4) care value, (5) politeness value, (6) responsiveness value, and (7) proactive value. The research method is content analysis with a qualitative, descriptive approach. The subject was the English textbook for 10th graders, written by the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2017. The research shows that there were seven social character values in Buku Bahasa Inggris for 10th graders, written by the ministry of education and culture, dominated by the responsibility value (28.1%) and proactive value (26.3%). Discipline and responsiveness, on the other hand, are the least common social character values, appearing with frequency of 2.8% and 0.4%, respectively. The results of this study indicate that the textbook isn’t good enough to be used in teaching and learning activities, and it also doesn’t match Mr. Jokowi’s plan.
