Abstract

This community service iitiative aims to develop an eco-friedly product utilizing local natural resources, specifically Avicenna marina mangrove leaves as raw material for candle production. The innovattion is driven by the ecological and economic potential of mangrove plants, which have not yet been optimally utilized, alongside the need for alternative income sources for coastal communities. The implementation method includes literature review, processing mangrove leaves through boiling and mixing with basic candle materials, production training for coastal residents and mentoring of small-scale environmentally based enterprises.The results of the activity indicate that the candles produced have stable flame performance, a natural aroma and aesthetically appealing qualities suitable for commercial sale. This program serves as an inital step in developing a creative economy model based on mangrove ecosystes, which can be replicated in other coastal regions. Through a collaborative and sustainable approach, this initiative demonstrates that environmental conservation and social empowerment can go hand in hand.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out by lecturers and students from various departments and faculties of the University of Muhammadiyah Sorong through the Mahasiswa Berdampak program, focusing on education and community empowerment in the Aimas area, Sorong Regency, from September to October 2025. The aim of this activity was to improve the knowledge and skills of farmer groups in developing forest plant nurseries and Multi-Purpose Tree Species (MPTS) as an effort to support local economic resilience. The implementation methods included socialization, technical training on seedling media preparation, selection of superior seeds, seedling maintenance, and mentoring in managing community-based nurseries. This activity also encouraged active community participation in creating productive seed sources that can be utilized for both reforestation and income generation. The results showed an increased understanding among farmer groups regarding proper nursery techniques, as well as the emergence of community initiatives to independently develop nursery businesses. Thus, this program provided not only ecological benefits through the supply of plant seedlings but also sustainable economic benefits for the local community. It is expected that this activity will serve as a collaborative model of community service among students, lecturers, and local residents in supporting forestry development based on community economic empowerment in Sorong Regency.

Abstract

Aren (Arenga pinnata Merr.) salah satu jenis tumbuhan palma yang memiliki berbagai manfaat, salah satunya sebagai sumber air nira yang dapat diolah menjadi gula aren. Nira aren adalah cairan manis yang dihasilkan dari proses penyadapan pada bunga jantan dan bunga betina untuk memperoleh cairan yang kaya gula, sebagai bahan baku produk seperti minuman, gula merah, dan lainnya. Teknik penyadapan nira aren oleh masyarakat di Kampung Namro dilakukan secara tradisional hingga pembuatan gula aren. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan teknik penyadapan tradisional nira Aren dan menganalisis usaha gula aren pada masyarakat Kampung Namro Distrik Teminabuan Kabupaten Sorong Selatan. Riset ini menggunakan metode deskriptif melalui Temu Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teknik penyadapan nira Aren oleh masyarakat Kampung Namro meliputi pertama, pembersihan tongkol; kedua, pemukulan tongkol beberapa kali; ketiga, penentuan tongkol untuk disadap; keempat, persiapan penyadapan; kelima penyadapan dengan cara menyayat atau memotong  ujung tongkol aren, keenam, mengikat bambu atau bumbung untuk menadah cairan nira yang keluar dari tongkol nira; ketujuh, penyadapan berulang kali untuk memperbarui sayatan setiap hari atau dua kali sehari. Hasil usaha gula aren diperoleh pendapatan sebesar Rp. 160.000/sekali produksi. Dari segi kelayakan usaha R/C Ratio dan B/C Ratio, menunjukkan bahwa usaha gula aren yang produksi pun layak untuk diusahakan karena para pelaku usaha mendapatkan keuntungan yang memadai yang menjadi sumber pendapatan rumah tangga dalam memenuhi kebutuhan hidup.
