Abstract

Waste in Sorong consists of a mixture of organic and non-organic materials. Based on its categories, Sorong's waste can be classified as plastic, paper/cardboard, glass/bottle, iron/tin, hazardous waste (B3), and organic waste. The purpose of this community empowerment activity is to maintain the beauty of the public space panorama and instill discipline in the disposal of waste among all residents of Sorong. This community engagement activity took place on September 13, 2023, in front of DEO Airport in Sorong City, Southwest Papua Province. The community engagement activities included: (1) Delivering a presentation on the importance of World Cleanup Day; (2) Cleaning up waste around the public areas of DEO Airport; and (3) Collecting waste in bags for weighing. The theme for this activity was "Environmental Cleanup Service in Sorong City in Commemoration of World Clean Up Day 2023." The technical approach for World Cleanup Day this year involved dividing groups into "A, B, G, C" (academics, business, government, and community) within designated "work focus areas" (waste cleanup) spread throughout the DEO Airport area in Sorong City, particularly in public spaces that are central points for waste input. Therefore, the recommendation from this activity emphasizes the importance of avoiding the use of plastic in daily activities that tend to rely on plastic.

Abstract

Most residents in Kilo 10, Sorong City, use well water for daily needs. One common issue is the presence of iron in the well water, which causes rust and brown stains on clothes or household items. This study aims to determine the pH, TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), salinity, conductivity, turbidity, TSS (Total Suspended Solids), and temperature in well water. The well water samples were taken from areas with neutral pH (Sumbersari), basic pH (Puger), and acidic pH (Kencong). The results showed that the pH of the well water samples was 6.2, TDS was 185, indicating that the well water met the standards. The salinity was 150 or 1.5 mg/L, and the conductivity of pure water ranged from 0-200 μS/cm (low conductivity), large river water ranged from 200-1000 μS/cm (mid-range conductivity), and saline water was 1000-10000 μS/cm (high conductivity). The conductivity value for potable water is around 42-500 μS/cm. The turbidity result was 19 NTU, indicating that the well water sample was not suitable for drinking. The TDS value was high at 667, and the temperature was 30.5°C.

Abstract

The aim of this service is to analyze the water quality of Sorong City, as well as disseminate information to the younger generation, namely high school students. The service stage is divided into two stages: observation and socialization. In the observation stage, measurements were carried out with the parameters measured being pH, conductivity, turbidity, TSS, TDS, and salinitas which were then compared with the standard criteria for river water quality according to Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 concerning Implementation of Environmental Protection and Management. The analysis results show that it is still within safe limits, but the TSS and salinity values are quite high, requiring management and control measures to maintain dam water quality. It is hoped that socialization will ensure that high school students can protect, conserve and maintain available water resources for the future.

Abstract

This community service iitiative aims to develop an eco-friedly product utilizing local natural resources, specifically Avicenna marina mangrove leaves as raw material for candle production. The innovattion is driven by the ecological and economic potential of mangrove plants, which have not yet been optimally utilized, alongside the need for alternative income sources for coastal communities. The implementation method includes literature review, processing mangrove leaves through boiling and mixing with basic candle materials, production training for coastal residents and mentoring of small-scale environmentally based enterprises. The results of the activity indicate that the candles produced have stable flame performance, a natural aroma and aesthetically appealing qualities suitable for commercial sale. This program serves as an inital step in developing a creative economy model based on mangrove ecosystes, which can be replicated in other coastal regions. Through a collaborative and sustainable approach, this initiative demonstrates that environmental conservation and social empowerment can go hand in hand.
