Abstract

Inadequate calcium intake during pregnancy remains a major nutritional problem in rural areas and may increase the risk of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the determinants of calcium intake among pregnant women in Sangkulirang, East Kutai Regency, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 52 pregnant women selected using purposive sampling. Calcium intake was assessed using a Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) and categorized based on Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). Data were analyzed using chi-square and logistic regression tests. Most respondents (61.5%) had inadequate calcium intake. Maternal knowledge (p=0.001), antenatal care utilization (p=0.003), occupation (p=0.041), education (p=0.045), and maternal age (p=0.041) were significantly associated with calcium intake. Maternal knowledge was identified as the dominant determinant (OR=5.21; 95% CI=1.89–14.32). Maternal knowledge and antenatal care utilization are important determinants of calcium intake among pregnant women in rural areas.

Abstract

Introduction: Postpartum anemia remains a prevalent health issue in Indonesia and can hinder maternal recovery after childbirth. Local non-pharmacological options, such as moringa leaves rich in iron, vitamin C, and antioxidants, offer potential benefits for improving hemoglobin levels. However, community knowledge about their benefits and proper use is still limited. Objective: The purpose of this service was to improve the knowledge of postpartum mothers with anemia regarding the potential use of moringa leaves as a nutritional source to support the increase of hemoglobin levels. Method: The activity was carried out from 1–20 November 2025 using an educational approach within the “Postpartum Education Class.” The sessions included interactive lectures, discussions, and the delivery of information on the nutritional content of moringa leaves, their benefits for postpartum mothers, and recommended safe forms of daily consumption. Evaluation was conducted through pre-tests and post-tests to measure the increase in participants’ knowledge, attitude and motivation unsing moringa leaves. Result: There was a change between the pre-test and post-test in knowledge in the good category (33.3% vs. 100%), attitude in the positive category (20% vs. 100%), and motivation in the positive category (26.7% vs. 100%). Data analysis using McNemar’s test showed a significant increase in the levels of knowledge (p < 0.001), attitude (p < 0.001), and motivation (p < 0.001) of postpartum mothers after participating in the Postpartum Education Class. Conclusion: The education provided was effective in enhancing the understanding of postpartum mothers regarding the use of moringa leaves as a supportive effort in managing anemia.

Abstract

Stunting is a health problem that not only inhibits physical growth but also affects children’s quality of life. Beyond nutrition, parenting styles play a key role in shaping children’s well-being, especially during the golden period of development. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between parenting style and the quality of life of stunted children aged 2–5 years old in Kediri City. An analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on 30 parents of stunted children selected using purposive sampling. Parenting style was measured using a questionnaire, while quality of life was measured with the WHOQOL-BREF instrument. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that 60% of parents applied poor parenting, and 66.7% of stunted children had a low quality of life. Cross-tabulation revealed that children with parents practicing poor parenting were more likely to have low quality of life, while most children with good parenting experienced better quality of life. Chi-square test results indicated a significant relationship (χ² = 6.412; p = 0.011). Good parenting can improve children’s quality of life even with stunting. Healthcare workers are expected to provide education on parenting style to support the quality of life for stunted children.
