Abstract

Physical activity is essential for overall health, yet it is declining among university students due to academic pressures, technological use, and sedentary lifestyles. This study aimed to describe physical activity levels among Physical Education students and examine their relationship with sedentary behavior, motivation, and perceived impacts. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted with 118 students using a 17-item Likert-scale questionnaire. Data were analyzed descriptively through scoring, frequency, and percentage. The findings show that physical activity levels are generally moderate, while sedentary behavior is moderate to high. Motivation tends to be low to moderate, and many students report notable physical and psychosocial effects. These results indicate a multidimensional physical activity crisis and a gap between students’ academic roles and daily practices. The study highlights the need for comprehensive and sustainable campus-based interventions to promote active lifestyles.

Abstract

Abstract

Modern pentathlon is a multidisciplinary sport that combines physical endurance, technical skills, and psychological readiness within a single competitive setting. At the regional level, provincial championships play a strategic role in evaluating athlete development, identifying participation patterns, and assessing the effectiveness of coaching systems. This study aimed to describe athlete participation and performance at the 2025 Indonesian Modern Pentathlon Provincial Championship (Madiun Mayor’s Cup) using official competition data. This study employed a quantitative descriptive design with a retrospective approach. Secondary data were obtained from the official championship results book, covering all registered athletes who participated in the competition. The subjects included male and female athletes from U-9 to senior age categories, competing in biathle, triathle, and laser run events across individual, relay, and mixed relay formats. Data analysis was conducted descriptively using frequency and percentage calculations to examine participation by age group, gender, event, and region of origin, as well as performance indicators including athlete rankings, podium distribution, and regional dominance. The results showed that athlete participation was highest in the U-9 to U-15 age groups, indicating a strong foundation of early-stage development in modern pentathlon. However, a noticeable decline in participation occurred at the junior and senior levels, suggesting challenges in sustaining athlete progression to higher competitive stages. Performance analysis revealed that podium achievements were distributed across several regions, with Madiun City, Surabaya City, Pasuruan Regency, Kediri City, and Malang Regency demonstrating the most consistent dominance. Differences in performance between events and age groups reflected variations in training quality, competition experience, and athlete readiness. In conclusion, the 2025 Madiun Mayor’s Cup Provincial Championship functioned not only as a competitive event but also as an effective evaluation platform for regional modern pentathlon development. The findings emphasize the importance of data-driven coaching strategies and sustainable long-term athlete development pathways to enhance competitive performance

Abstract

This study addresses the growing paradox between the well-established benefits of physical activity and the persistent global prevalence of physical inactivity by examining the role of fitness centers and gyms from a physical education perspective. While these facilities are commonly viewed as spaces for exercise, their broader educational, behavioral, and public health contributions remain underexplored. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the concepts, functions, and contributions of fitness centers and gyms in promoting physical literacy and sustainable active lifestyles. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, using data from Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar. A total of 245 records were identified, of which 20 studies met the inclusion criteria after screening and eligibility assessment. The findings indicate that fitness centers and gyms contribute significantly to improving physical fitness, metabolic health, and psychological well-being. Beyond physiological outcomes, these facilities also play an important role in shaping motivation, self-efficacy, and long-term engagement in physical activity. Additionally, factors such as accessibility, inclusivity, and socioecological influences were found to affect participation. The review further reveals that fitness environments can function as informal learning spaces that support the development of physical literacy, although this role remains underemphasized in existing research. In conclusion, fitness centers and gyms have substantial potential as strategic platforms for promoting public health and active lifestyles. A more integrative approach that combines physical, educational, and behavioral dimensions is needed to optimize their contribution within the broader context of physical education and public health.
