Abstract

Noonan syndrome (NS; OMIM#163950) is a relatively common autosomal dominant disorder with a worldwide prevalence of approximately 1:1,000 to 1:2,500. The syndrome is characterized by distinctive facial features, congenital heart defects (CHD), and short stature. Distinctive facial features consist of a broad and high forehead, hypertelorism, downslanting palpebral fissures, a high arched palate, low set and posteriorly rotated ears with a thick helix, and a short neck with excess nuchal skin and low posterior hairline. Additional relatively frequent features include chest deformities, cryptorchidism in males, mild intellectual disability, and bleeding diathesis.1,2In 2001, missense mutations in

Abstract

Objective: Since December 2019, COVID-19 has become a global concern causing more than thousands of deaths worldwide. The major challenge in fighting against this new emerging disease is the limited data regarding the heterogeneity of its clinical and epidemiological features. We aim to fill this knowledge gap by evaluating a mild case of COVID-19 infecting a health worker in Indonesia.Method: We report a 31-year-old male doctor who was hospitalized for mild pneumonia with positive SARS-CoV-2 swab testResult: This case presents an estimated incubation period of 2 days. The patient showed mild upper respiratory symptoms without significant pneumonia symptoms, however mild pneumonia was confirmed by the presence of fever and pulmonary infiltrates on imaging. Despite the seemingly mild symptoms, there was a complex systemic reaction as thrombocytopenia and elevated aminotransferase enzyme occurred. The patient is a health worker susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 transmission with a close contact history with a suspected COVID-19 patient, without wearing an adequate personal protective equipment (PPE).Conclusion: Patients with mild presentation of COVID-19 could exhibit a complex systemic reaction and organ injury. The use of an appropriate PPE among health workers is crucial to prevent patient-to-doctor transmission.

Abstract

Ongoing advances in digital technology require teachers to adapt and develop their technological competence continuously. However, a gap in technological understanding remains between teachers in rural and urban areas, particularly in Indonesia. SMA Negeri 1 Sukanagara, as the only public high school in its region, faces challenges related to water scarcity and limited access to energy, which affect both learning activities and the school community's basic needs. This community service program aims to enhance teachers' digital literacy through training in Computational Thinking (CT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Renewable Energy prior to the implementation of a smart rainwater-harvesting system at the school. The methods used included a survey, training sessions, and evaluation using a problem-based approach combined with pre-test and post-test assessments. A problem-based learning approach confirmed that the CT training had helped teachers to develop more structured problem-solving skills. Results of the test also show that AI and Renewable Energy training improved participants' understanding by an average of 17.08% and 14.28%, respectively, compared to their initial scores. These improvements demonstrate the potential of training programs like these to enhance teachers' understanding and better prepare them for implementing emerging technologies in schools.

Abstract

Mental health has become a global issue that is receiving increasing attention across various levels of society. Modern clinical psychology has contributed significantly to the understanding and addressing of various mental disorders through scientific approaches, behavioral therapy, and medical interventions. However, within Muslim societies, these approaches are not considered fully capable of responding to the needs of the human soul in a holistic manner, because aspects of faith and spirituality are often not placed at the center of mental development. This qualitative descriptive literature review positions the Qur’an as the primary source, particularly verses related to the concept of tuma’ninah. Secondary sources include authoritative works of Qur’anic exegesis and tafsir. Based on a tafsir tarbawi analysis of Qur’anic verses, tuma’ninah represents the true tranquility of the soul rooted in faith, dhikr, righteous deeds, and spiritual closeness to Allah. Tuma’ninah is not merely a temporary emotional condition but an inner stability that arises through an integral process of soul education, including the strengthening of creed, tazkiyatun nafs, spiritual formation, and comprehensive psychological management. Thus, tuma’ninah serves as an indicator of the success of Qur’anic education for the soul.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Thalassemia is a monogenic disorder that ranks fifth among the catastrophic diseases in Indonesia. Thalassemia screening plays an important role in preventing the birth of individuals with thalassemia major. Numerous erythrocyte indices have been used as first-line screening methods for beta-thalassemia trait, preceding definitive analysis using hemoglobin electrophoresis. Objective: This study aimed to conduct a literature review comparing the most frequently used erythrocyte indices in Indonesia with hemoglobin electrophoresis. Methods: A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, EBSCO, and Google Scholar databases in July 2024. This study included full-text articles in Indonesian or English that compared erythrocyte indices and hemoglobin electrophoresis for thalassemia screening. Results: Six articles were included in this review. Two of the six articles analyzed the compatibility of erythrocyte indices and hemoglobin electrophoresis using kappa statistics. The remaining articles calculated the diagnostic values.  Among the ten erythrocyte indices, the Mentzer index was the most frequently assessed, appearing in six studies, followed by the indices of Shine & Lal and Sirdah, each evaluated in three studies. The Green-King, England & Fraser, and Srivastava indices were each examined in two studies. Additionally, Ehsani, Matos and Carvalho, RDW, and MCV and/or MCH indices were each assessed in one study. Conclusion: The compatibility between erythrocyte indices and hemoglobin electrophoresis, based on two studies, was fair indicating that hematological indices alone are insufficient for a definitive diagnosis. This finding aligns with the conclusions of four other studies, which also suggested that no single erythrocyte index is definitive. Among the indices, the Green-King Index demonstrated the highest reliability; however, further studies are needed to support this finding, while hemoglobin electrophoresis remains essential for an accurate diagnosis.
