Abstract

This systematic review gives an overview of studies dealing with the use of technology to monitor volleyball athletes during the time span from January 2015 to April 2026. By following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we initially retrieved 2, 449 records from Scopus through a Boolean search. After stepwise screening, 29 documents ended up being reviewed. Methodological quality was, firstly, measured by the FICO framework (threshold ≥ 2/4), and AMSTAR-2 for systematic reviews was used; the reliability of the results across the reviewers was excellent (Cohen's κ = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.74, 0.88, i.e. strong agreement). Three major technology categories were identified: (1) wearable IMU-based systems, (2) GPS/LPS optical tracking, and (3) AI and machine learning analytics. Wearable devices were consistent in measuring jump load and player load (ICC > 0.87, 95% CI: 0.82, 0.93), whereas machine learning classifiers were able to recognize actions with accuracies of 85, 97%. Publication bias was very low (Egger's test, p = 0.21). The major problems identified were differences in cross-device standardization, female and youth players being, largely, absent from the studies, and laboratory sensor validation hardly reflecting real-life use.

Abstract

Rapid adoption of wearable sensors, biometric monitoring and AI has dramatically changed the athlete monitoring scene in high-level sports, with performance maximisation and injury prevention significantly improved alongside emergence of privacy, autonomy and data governance-related issues. This systematic literature review combines the latest research on the digital surveillance aspect and athlete privacy in top sports and high-performance sport while particularly examining the ethical, legal and governance effects of data-driven monitoring. The review method strictly followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Initially 748 research records found on a Scopus database with a structured search and after the screening process, 10 peer-reviewed publications satisfied all inclusion criteria. The articles selected for the review covered the topics of monitoring via surveillance, privacy, consent, autonomy or governance issues. Thematic synthesis uncovered three key areas: First, through extensive data collection, continuous biometric and location monitoring has enabled the organization to exercise a great amount of control over the athletes. Second, due to the employment dependence and high-level pressure of athlete competition, the athletes' free will is highly limited and even the athletes' privacy in terms of information they can provide or know about their data is very limited. Third and finally, privacy-preserving technologies, data co-ownership, data sovereignty frameworks and similar governance tools are still in rudimentary states and not able to follow the speed of development of the technology. Besides being the review paper on technology-aided monitoring in sports, this paper relates the changes within sports to the general theory around how our lives become data-centric and our activities are watched. Also, it underscores the importance of procedures for obtaining valid consent, limitation of data collection and use to specific purposes and having external auditors or authorities to carry out independent checkups or oversight. Research is urged to focus on producing athlete-centred evidence, examining different governing models, comparing regulations in different countries and helping to establish the ethical digital monitoring for elite sports.

Abstract

The study reviewed a body of research on the effects of Ecological Dynamics and the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA) in tennis coaching, looking for a pattern of evidence. Using Scopus and following PRISMA 2020, the systematic review identified peer-reviewed English-language articles published in the period of 2018-2026 that focused on ecological theories, constraints-led approach to physical education and coach development through representative learning, or technologies for tennis practice. From the 238 records we screened, we found 10 articles that fit the inclusion criteria to be the focus of this work and we used thematic analysis method for summarizing their findings. The quality of the methods used in the included studies was assessed using the FICO framework, which helped us identify a variety of strengths and weaknesses that characterized this research area. Overall, the results show that representative learning design together with manipulation of various constraints (task or environmental) brought consistent improvement in skill execution, perception-action attunement, decision-making and match performance. Besides that, technologies such as wearable devices, virtual reality and machine learning have proven to be valuable tools in terms of measuring performance objectively and delivering representative feedback. Still, there are some limitations on the existing literature that may affect the credibility of the reported findings including low number of participants, predominantly adolescents as experimental subjects of the research, and using only one electronic database to retrieve the records.

Abstract

Tennis is a high-intensity intermittent sport requiring accurate workload monitoring to optimize performance and reduce injury risk. However, evidence regarding wearable-sensor applications remains fragmented across sport science, biomechanics, and engineering disciplines. This systematic literature review synthesizes current evidence on wearable-sensor technologies, validation, analytical methods, and practical applications for real-time monitoring in tennis. The review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A structured Boolean search of the Scopus database identified 130 records published between 2016 and 2026. After screening by two independent reviewers (Cohen's κ = 0.87), 15 studies met the predefined eligibility criteria and were included in the qualitative synthesis. Methodological quality was evaluated using the FICO framework to ensure structured assessment of study focus, reporting quality, contextual relevance, and outcomes. Thematic synthesis revealed four principal findings: (1) inertial measurement units demonstrated the strongest validity for stroke detection compared with video reference standards; (2) machine-learning algorithms achieved stroke-classification accuracies ranging from 93% to 98%; (3) wearable sensors effectively differentiated stroke and locomotor workloads across playing conditions; and (4) physiological and positioning technologies showed greater measurement error than inertial systems. Overall, wearable sensors demonstrate substantial potential for performance monitoring, although further longitudinal validation, multisensor integration, and broader athlete representation are required before widespread implementation in coaching and injury-prevention practice.

Abstract

Immersive technologies are becoming popular tools in sport and physical education. But the evidence for their teaching effectiveness is scattered across many fields. This systematic review looked at the design, implementation, effectiveness, and moderating factors of VR, AR, MR, and XR interventions in this area. The review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines with a predefined protocol. We searched only Scopus because of its wide coverage and standardized metadata. That helped make the search transparent and reproducible. The search found 403 records. After removing duplicates and screening, 18 studies met the criteria. Two reviewers independently handled selection and data extraction. Their agreement was excellent, with Cohen's κ = 0.87. Methodological quality was checked using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT 2018). Both reviewers did thematic synthesis separately before reaching consensus. Four main themes came out: (1) tactical and cognitive learning, (2) motor skill acquisition through augmented feedback, (3) curricular integration of immersive technologies, and (4) communication, socialization, and inclusion. Overall, these technologies boosted learner engagement, real-time feedback, motor skills, and tactical understanding. But their effectiveness depended on learner expertise, visuospatial ability, instructional design, and teacher competence. Still, using only Scopus and excluding grey literature might have caused publication bias and limited the evidence. Future work should focus on longitudinal studies, transfer of learning to real sport performance, and strong comparative trials across different educational settings.

Abstract

English has become the dominant language of communication in sport sciences, yet many students continue to experience difficulties in acquiring specialised vocabulary, technical terminology, and discipline-specific discourse required for academic and professional contexts. Although corpus linguistics offers a robust evidence-based approach for identifying authentic language patterns, its pedagogical application in sport sciences remains fragmented. This systematic literature review synthesises empirical evidence on corpus-based English research relevant to sport sciences education. The review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and searched the Scopus database because of its comprehensive coverage of peer-reviewed interdisciplinary literature in linguistics, education, and sport sciences. A structured Boolean search identified 403 records, of which 18 studies (2015–2025) met the predefined eligibility criteria after duplicate removal, title and abstract screening, and full-text assessment based on the PICOS framework. Two independent reviewers conducted the screening and data extraction process, with disagreements resolved through discussion. Methodological quality was evaluated using the FICO framework, and evidence was synthesised through the thematic synthesis approach proposed by Thomas and Harden (2008). Four overarching themes emerged: (1) specialised vocabulary development and word-list construction, (2) sport terminology and cross-linguistic variation, (3) spoken and instructional discourse in sport contexts, and (4) corpus-informed pedagogical applications. The findings indicate that technical vocabulary and multiword expressions constitute a substantial proportion of sport science discourse, while inconsistencies in terminology across languages continue to challenge instructional standardisation. Nevertheless, most existing studies remain descriptive, with relatively few evaluating instructional effectiveness or learning outcomes. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of corpus-based evidence and highlights the need for discipline-specific teaching materials, corpus-informed curricula, and intervention studies evaluating pedagogical effectiveness. The findings offer practical guidance for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum development and establish directions for future corpus-based research in sport sciences education.

Abstract

In international sport organisations, governance is still heavily male-dominated. This persists despite years of gender equality pledges and more women taking part in sports. In this systematic literature review, we looked at recent empirical evidence on women's representation in sport governance. We examined the barriers and enablers that affect their access to leadership. We also looked at how organisations either maintain or challenge gendered power structures. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, this systematic literature review searched the Scopus database for empirical studies published between 2015 and 2025 using a structured Boolean strategy. Two independent reviewers conducted study screening and data extraction, resolving disagreements through discussion. The methodological quality of eligible studies was assessed using the FICO framework, and evidence was synthesised through thematic synthesis. From 374 identified records, 73 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility, and ten studies met all inclusion and quality criteria for the final synthesis. Four main themes came out. First, women are still underrepresented on sport boards. Very few organisations hit the 30% mark that's linked to having real influence. Second, structural and cultural barriers keep limiting leadership chances. These include hegemonic masculinity, homologous reproduction, biased selection practices, and the glass ceiling. Third, coercive tools like gender quotas and board mandates lead to more consistent representation gains than voluntary efforts. But cultural change stays limited. Fourth, equity champions and gender-equality committees can help push progress forward. Yet they often bump into wider organisational constraints. These results back up critical mass theory, feminist institutionalism, and gendered-organisation perspectives. They also show that hitting numerical targets is not enough. We need structural and cultural reforms too. Future work should focus on intersectional, longitudinal, and non-Western angles.

Abstract

One of the toughest challenges in sports medicine is figuring out when an athlete can safely return to play after an upper extremity injury. Functional performance tests, isokinetic strength assessments, and patient-reported outcome measures are commonly used, but there is still no widely accepted, evidence-based RTP framework for shoulder, elbow, or wrist injuries. This systematic review pulled together the latest evidence on RTP assessment, pinpointed criteria backed by research, evaluated the tools available, and pointed out where studies are still lacking. The review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and searched the Scopus database for English-language studies published between 2021 and 2026. Two independent reviewers handled study selection and data extraction, with strong agreement (Cohen's κ = 0.87). Methodological quality was checked using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist. Out of 633 records, only 10 studies made the cut. Four main themes came out of the analysis. First, criteria-based RTP protocols led to fewer reinjuries compared with time-based clearance, even when some functional deficits remained. Second, isokinetic rotational strength and limb symmetry turned out to be the strongest predictors of successful RTP. Third, functional tests like the Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test and Unilateral Seated Shot-Put Test showed real clinical value, but they need population-specific normative data to be more useful. Fourth, psychological readiness played its own role in RTP decisions, independent of physical measures. Wearable sensors and artificial intelligence show potential for continuous monitoring, but stronger prospective evidence is still needed. Overall, the current evidence supports a multidimensional RTP framework that combines objective strength, functional performance, and psychological readiness. At the same time, it highlights the need for standardized, pathology-specific criteria through future multicenter prospective studies.

Abstract

Sports coaching has been getting a major overhaul from digital technologies. Things like continuous athlete monitoring, computer vision movement analysis, wearable sensors, and intelligent decision-support systems are all part of it. But even with all this rapid progress, the evidence is still scattered across different fields, sport science, engineering, AI, human-computer interaction. That makes it hard to get a clear picture of how well these tools actually work in real coaching. This systematic review pulled together the current evidence on digital coaching systems. We wanted to see what technological approaches are dominant, how solid the research methods are, and where things should go next. The review stuck to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. We ran a structured Boolean search in Scopus, looking at TITLE-ABS-KEY fields for studies from 2021 to 2025. Only English-language peer-reviewed journal articles that met predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria were kept. Two independent reviewers screened titles, abstracts, and full texts; any disagreements got sorted out in discussion. Methodological quality got rated using the FICO framework, Focus, Information, Context, Outcome. Then we synthesized the findings through inductive thematic analysis. Out of 986 records initially identified, just 15 studies made it through all the eligibility and quality checks. Four major themes came up: wearable sensing and athlete monitoring, computer vision and markerless motion tracking, intelligent and immersive coaching systems, and analytics-driven decision-support. One thing was clear: technical accuracy is consistently high across these studies. But when it comes to long-term coaching effectiveness, usability, implementation, and ethical governance, the evidence is still thin. That points to a clear need for future research, longitudinal, multi-site, and centered on what coaches actually need.
