Abstract

A deeper conflict within Indonesia’s halal governance system is exposed by the controversy over halal certification for goods bearing names associated with haram concepts. This study examines the historical development of halal-certification organizations, sociological factors influencing halal assurance among producers and consumers, and the public response to the moral conundrum posed by halal-certified goods with names inappropriate to their religions, using a sociological–historical methodology. Primary data was gathered from documents and digital media sources using qualitative methods. The legal-semiotic anomaly appears in Law No. 33/2014 on Halal Product Assurance, where material consideration enables controversial names (such as haram, immoral, or occult elements) to be considered halal due to legal permissibility, creating a separation between halal as a material (legal) aspect and halal as an identity (semantic-ethical). The results show that this anomaly can be explained by an epistemic tension between positivist law and religious ethics, in which the former deems naming insignificant while the latter views the name as part of the meaning of halal. The problem lies in halal governance, where the notion of Halal-Identity is employed as a framework emphasising halal as an identity concept.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the moral and spiritual meanings contained in Hasan Abdullah Sahal's nasyid Firru Ilallah using Roland Barthes's semiotic approach. This work was chosen because it implies strong da'wah values and presents a profound Islamic reflection through a combination of lyrics, tunes, and meaningful musical symbols. The nasyid not only functions as a medium for religious entertainment, but also as a means of conveying a moral message that directs humans to return to God and realize the true nature of life. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a two-stage semiotic analysis according to Roland Barthes, namely denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. The primary data in this study are nasyid lyric texts that are analyzed based on the structure of signs and the context of the meanings that appear in them. The results show that at the denotative level, the lyrics depict a call to return to God through an awareness of human sin, weakness, and limitations. At the connotative level, the nasyid presents a moral message about the importance of repentance, humility, and recognition of human dependence on God. Meanwhile, at the mythical level, a construction of spiritual values is found that emphasizes the concept of human nature and the spiritual journey toward the perfection of faith. Overall, the nasyid Firru Ilallah is not only a work of religious art but also serves as an effective medium for preaching, awakening moral, spiritual, and Islamic values in its listeners.

Abstract

Purpose This study aimed to reconstruct the silencing of narratives about Lampung's female heroes in historiography shaped by the coloniality of knowledge and patriarchy. Method This study used a qualitative approach with a literature study and critical historiography to analyze colonial archives, official Lampung history, writings about female figures, and literature on oral traditions containing collective memories about them. It employed decolonial feminist critique to examine the relationship between gender, memory politics, and local knowledge. Result/findings This study showed that Lampung's historiography produces narratives of masculine heroic figures. This was showed by a historiography that centered on male figures as heroes, while the contributions of women such as Poeti Alam Naisjah Moeloek, Putri Mentawai, Ratu Mas Lamban Gedung, and Hj. Inci Hindun Rauf were reduced, silenced, or marginalized to the domestic and cultural realms. Oral tradition needed to be seen as an alternative epistemic medium and archive preserving the collective memory of the role of female heroes outside of written colonial archives and state narratives. Conclusion This study concluded that silencing was read as a form of layered epistemic injustice between the coloniality of knowledge and the coloniality of gender. It also offered a framework to reconstruct Lampung's history in a more inclusive, gender-just manner, grounded in community knowledge.
