The writing of this scientific work aims to describe how the development of literacy in Muslim countries and how Islam develops with science and literacy. This paper is motivated by a sense of appreciation for Muslim scientists in the era of the glory of the Islamic dynasty and the desire to recall the advances in Islamic civilization in science, especially literacy as learning for the present generation. In addition, this article discusses how libraries and literacy play a major role and is the key to the development of ancient Islamic glory. This paper also tells how the Islamic library in its history also experienced a dark period. When Muslims were conquered by other nations such as Europeans, Tartars, and Indians many libraries were destroyed and their collections destroyed. The destruction of the library which later became the background of the breakup of the scientific chain, between the golden age of Islam and the era afterwards. It also makes the present reality, which makes Muslims become people who are left behind from other nations, for example, Europe, which is a symbol of intellectual progress in modern times.Keyword: Library, Literacy, Civilization of Islam.

Abstract

This article compares how the Indonesian, specifically the urban people respond to the pandemic during the history. In 1918, Indonesia, formerly known as the Dutch East Indies, witnessed a pandemic of the Spanish Flu that killed thousands of lives. A century later, Indonesia is once again experienced with the lethal Covid-19 pandemic. The emphasized responses are specific on countermeasures and vaccination programs during the Spanish Flu 1918 and Covid-19 pandemics. The primary source of this research is the archive of annual reports (Kolonial Verslag) Dutch East Indies government 1920 and a report from the Dutch East Indies Civil Health Service (Burgerlijken Geneeskujdigen Dienst), as well as supported by newspapers such as: Sin Po, Oetoesan Hindia, Pewarta Soerabaia, Tjhoen Tjhioe,Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad, and Andalas. This article also aims at understanding how the Indonesian people are handling pandemics, both the Spanish Flu and the Covid-19 pandemics. The action taken by the government in tackling the Spanish flu and Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia is to issue regulations to reduce activities in the public domain. This regulation has proven successful in reducing the spread of the Spanish flu pandemic in the past and Covid-19 in the present. This research found that Indonesian urban in the past and today have similar points of view, the irrational views and rational views, this is proofed from the emergence of unique, local-rational, and uncontrollable news and rumours because of the amplification of news about the outbreak.  The difference is that in the past, religious responses were expressly confronted with the news but in the present, it is more moderate and open to cooperating with programs from the government. The spectrum from the news of the past outbreaks is not as large as that of the present. Mass media with information technology to social media are further expanding the spectrum from outbreak news to produce more powerful amplifications. It also affects the polarization of the masses that respond rationally and irrationally to the outbreak.

Abstract

This article discusses the history of the arrival of the Arabs, especially the Sayyid group, to Medan. The Sayyid group began to come to Medan around the 19th century. On average, their arrival was motivated to trade, only a small proportion of them came with the intention of spreading Islam. This study uses the historical method in four writing steps, namely; heuristics, verification or criticism, interpretation, and historiography, with a social approach. Since the widespread cultivation of Deli Tobacco in Medan, Medan has turned into an area that is crowded with immigrants from all over the world. Moreover, since it was made the Capital of the Residency of East Sumatra in 1889, Medan has become the most developed city on the East Coast of Sumatra. The presence of Arabs in this area made Medan a city with a very diverse population. Since the beginning of his arrival, Arab social interactions have been going well and have never experienced conflicts with other ethnicities, but have been warmly welcomed. Apart from that, the presence of Arabs also had an impact on the life of the people of Medan City, such as in the fields of: religion, trade, marriage and the arts.

Abstract

This article aims to explain how the involvement and success of the Persatoean Arab Indonesia (PAI) in integrating Arab-Hadrami society into a part of the Indonesian nation. PAI was originally a social organization founded in Semarang in 1934. But along the way, this organization turned into a political organization because of the demands of its time. This article uses historical research methods in four steps, i.e., heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The main source in this article is the personal archive of A. R. Baswedan, organizational archives of Persatoean Arab Indonesia (PAI), and Koempoelan Toelisan Gerakan al-Irsjad. While the supporting sources come from contemporaneous newspapers, e.g., Pewarta Arab, Insaf, Matahari, Al-Ma’arif, ad-Dahna, Hadhramaut dan Aliran Baroe, as well as secondary sources derived from books, journals, and other scientific articles relevant to this topic. The results showed that: (1) Persatoean Arab Indonesia (PAI) was founded as a solution to reconcile the opposition among sayidi and non-sayid groups that divided the Arab-Hadrami community in the Dutch East Indies. Along the way, PAI then gained the support of the two conflicting groups; (2) PAI succeeded in integrating the Arab-Hadrami community into part of the Indonesian nation. Abstract

This article discusses the tradition of fresh flour which is still practiced by ethnic Malays in North Sumatra in various traditional ceremonies that are considered sacred. In this article the author uses the historical method. The historical method according to Gottschalk (1986) is a process of critically examining and analyzing records of past relics. Imaginative reconstruction of the past based on data obtained by going through that process is called historiography. The results showed that this tradition of plain flour had been practiced and was influenced by beliefs before the arrival of Islam to the North Sumatra region. Fresh flour comes from the word tampung Tawar which means the activity of accepting bidders by being accommodated (to hold hands) as a form of receiving bidders (drugs) and has a magical function. This tradition is also a means of asking God for blessings and privileges, so that all good things are poured out for people who are offered flour and kept away from bad things in their lives. In addition, this tradition is also a symbol of integration between religion and culture, especially in the North Sumatra region.

Abstract

The rapid flow of information in the digital age underscores the urgent need for critical literacy, particularly among Generation Z, to navigate, evaluate, and respond to diverse perspectives with discernment and responsibility. This study investigates the potential of Pancasila and Civic Education (PPKn) as a medium to cultivate critical literacy by embedding its values into educational practices. It examines the challenges educators face in integrating critical literacy into the PPKn curriculum and evaluates its impact on students' critical thinking skills. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research incorporates qualitative interviews with educators and quantitative surveys of high school students to measure changes in their analytical and evaluative capacities. Findings indicate a notable enhancement in students’ ability to critically engage with socio-political issues, aligning their responses with the principles of Pancasila. The study also highlights the urgent need for innovative teaching methodologies and digital tools to optimize critical literacy outcomes. Ultimately, the research concludes that embedding critical literacy into Pancasila and Civic Education offers a transformative model for equipping Generation Z to become informed and responsible citizens. It emphasizes the importance of prioritizing critical literacy in curriculum development, ensuring it aligns with national values and addresses global challenges.

Abstract

Abstract: The study of normative and historical views has become a widely discussed topic among Muslim scholars, particularly in Indonesia. Fazlur Rahman and Amin Abdullah are two key figures in the development of these views, emphasizing the importance of reinterpreting religious teachings in the context of the times to clarify issues of human religiosity. This article aims to discuss the influence of these views in Islamic history and underscore the significance of historical analysis for understanding the diverse Muslim population. The library research method was used to collect, read, record, and analyze sources. The study revealed that many scholars of Islamic history still adopt a normative view, despite the need for a historicity view to comprehend Islamic history based on factual data, given the diverse Muslim population worldwide. With the rapid advancement of technology and science, rigid normative views are increasingly being replaced by flexible historical views, which contextualize events in their era.
